  1. Wow! You two are fast and very helpful! Thank you! I feel a bit better now. I was pretty disappointed and concerned about RC2 being a bit buggy for a rookie like me! I still cannot get the md5sum to match but hope it is due to the way they were burned. I'll try to install this weekend when my connect speed is generally better so I can do live update while I am at it. :D
  2. I got a set of 9.1 CD's from local cd house (SE Asia) and took a look at them. I note the file dates are 17 Mar 2003. It says 9.1 Bamboo and no mention of being RC version but I suspect that they are not final versions. The md5sum's don't match the info on the ML mirrors either, but that could be due to the way they named/burned them if I understand md5sum correctly. It could also be that I am not doing the md5sum properly since I am not an expert by any means! There is a file on the CD called VERSION and it reads: Mandrake Linux 9.1 Bamboo-i586 20030317 17:24 Question: Can anyone verify that this is ML 9.1 RC2? If so, and I go ahead and install, will live update bring it up to final while I am installing? or... Should I just try to get the 9.1 final and leave this one alone? My download speed is not currently good enough to get the iso's so I have to find a source for the cd's. TIA!
  3. Thanks MoonChild! I am in the process of trying to learn more of the Linux commands. Think I will make a schedule of daily reading of man pages and try to attack one or two per day until I work my way through them. On thing I have to admit though... the writing style of the manpages and the difficulty of reading them on screen makes an old book-based person like me struggle to understand them. With a book one can flip the pages and compare things. With on screen the scrolling only allows me to see one page at a time. On the more detailed commands with L O N G manpages it is murder! I bought Linux in a Nutshell by O'Reilly but it has abbreviated most of the commands and doesn't have a full set of them either. Good book, but sometimes doesn't cover the things I am looking for at the moment. :?
  4. Thanks loads! Your explanation and examples help me make some sense out of it. I had tried to find some documentation that would help me understand it, but did not find anything that helped. I am running 9.0 and KDE 3.0.5a here. That's my learning curve progress so far, though I am trying some other wm's too. [kelly@localhost kelly]$ w 10:07pm up 3:59, 3 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT kelly pts/0 - 6:09pm 3:58m 0.00s ? - kelly pts/1 - 10:07pm 0.00s 0.03s 0.01s w got the same from root too. Then: [kelly@localhost kelly]$ who kelly :0 Apr 6 18:08 kelly pts/0 Apr 6 18:09 kelly pts/1 Apr 6 22:11 Which shows me the three me's... :) Again, thanks for taking the time to help me get a bit of a handle on how this works and what it is saying. It really does help me and I greatly appreciate your patience.
  5. Thanks for those fast answers! I will experiment with each of your suggestions and see which fits me the best. I imagine gvim might be the one if I can ever figure out how to drive it!
  6. I am full of questions today. Sorry if this is really basic, but I am lost right now and want to learn and understand this. When I run "top" (as user btw) it list 3 users most of the time. I am one, I assumed root is another, but who is #3? Just a moment ago, I ran top and had 4 users! So I did a bit of reading and tried $users and got: kelly, kelly, kelly, kelly I rebooted and ran $users, now have 3 again. [kelly@localhost kelly]$ users kelly kelly kelly What's this mean? Is it normal or do I have something going on here? AND most important, how can if find this kind of info by myself in the future so I don't waste the time of others? TIA!
  7. I hate to ask, but what is the best application to view log files? Is there a decent GUI viewer? I have tried system log viewer as root and get many "this is not a log file" errors and seg faults. Any recommendations?
  8. We are working overseas, but Jackson, TN is home for us. Try http://nlug.org or do a google for LUG Nashville (Vanderbilt Med School) and you can get a link to an LUG in Clarksville too. Hope you can find it. I just ordered 9.1 CD's from local LUG all three for about $6.50 US!
  9. http://members.optusnet.com.au/~spitch/com...ptop_linux.html http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/techpubs...206-0799-A.html Lots of links you can check from a Google of "armada 7400" AND "linux" check them out. Looks doable from the comments above, and I suspect 9.0 will be better at recogizing the hw. It may run a bit slow in GUI unless you beef up the RAM. No mention of heat related problems. I have many friends running Linux (mostly RH) on laptops with no problem heat wise. Just keep an eye on temps and see if the fan is operating and you should be fine. Of course, you never know until you try!
  10. Motts: Thanks for your help! I will try some things in the am. Today is my wife's birthday and I better shutdown before I dig a bigger hole for myself. Know what I mean? I don't have APM enabled, but it was before I shut it down a few weeks ago. I tried the scripts and they didn't work either before I added acpid or after. I looked into my BIOS settings, but it is pretty confusing and I need to go back and reread the manual for the MOBO to make sense of them. Three or four settings seem to interact between the PCI bus and acpid settings. I'll keep you posted.
  11. Motts: I saw this info on the PCLINUXONLINE and tried it but not getting it to work so far. http://www.pclinuxonline.com/modules.php?n...order=0&thold=0 ://http://www.pclinuxonline.com/module...rder=0&thold=0 ://http://www.pclinuxonline.com/module...rder=0&thold=0 I added the acpid via Install Software Manager and everything seemed to go well but acpid won't start even when set up in init.d script. Here's info posted to pclinux earlier:
  12. Thanks Aru! That is really great advice and I will be sure and use it next time around! I knew you could do that, but didn't think to test it before running it. Sometimes being anxious and nervous makes for mistakes, eh? BTW, the kernel upgrade process saved the old lilo.cfg as lilo.cfg.old so I guess if one had a problem you could use Knoppix or Tom's CD and boot, go to root and go back to the old kernel.

    rpms

Not entirely sure what you are asking, but I just checked my ML 9.0 install and have no /usr/lib/rpm/rpmb file either. There is a file:/usr/lib/rpm/rpmd and also have: /usr/lib/rpm/rpme, and rpmi, and rpmk, and rpmq, rpmrc and rpmv executables in that dir Sorry I am not more knowledgeable on this but hope this helps you track down the issue you are dealing with there!
  14. For the record...the ML 9.0 kernel update was slick and easy per MdkSec instructions and advice above. 8) I felt a bit nervous editing the lilo.cfg and hope I did it properly, but after I rebooted it runs fine and is using the new kernel! (2.4.19-32mdk that is...) Seems like everything I normally use is working fine too! Even a new convert can do this kernel stuff with the help of you guys! I really appreciate the advice and input from everyone! :D
  15. Not sure how it would have picked up and configured in an install, since I added the CDRW after 9.0 had been installed for 3 months or so. It certainly was not too hard to do after install! It is more fun to get your hands dirty and poke around a bit! :) After the install the new Liteon CDRW was recognized, but I still had to edit the fstab and setup for SCSI emulation so cdrecord and xcdroast could use it properly. I chose to do both drives as SCSI emulated so I can copy from CDR to CD burner. The Mandrake Control Center GUI helped some, especially to look at the mount points in a graphic view. But I agree that doing it manually forces you to learn where the files are (sometimes that is a trip if you are used to Windoze) and how to edit them. Then if something goes wrong you'll be able to know what might be the problem. It isn't so scarey later when you have a problem because you have been down the road before and it is at least partly familiar. Reading those boring and detailed man pages is not my idea of fun, but after you read them, goof up a few times and try again, they start to make sense and save you a lot of grief. The more experienced people on this board are more than ready to help you understand if you have questions after you've done a bit of homework. Personally I like to know what's under the hood/bonnet of this 'puter! One of these days I want to actually know how to tweak this thing out too! Someday I might even be able to help somebody else figure their 'puter out too! Enjoy!
  16. I CAN vote according to the lower right info, but since I haven't got the ISO's yet, I cannot install 9.1 so won't vote... Looks like Translators can vote... <g> :!:
  17. I installed a LiteOn 48 x 24 x 48 model LTR 48246S last weekend. As a newbie, I got a bit lost, but overall it went well. You might read my post: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php...3669&highlight= ://http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewto...669&highlight= ://http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewto...669&highlight= and learn from my mistakes. But actually, it worked well, the info on this board is VERY HELPFUL and you should have no problems if you follow the advice given. If you get lost, remember it really helps to post your fstab and lilo.cfg and identify your cd devices well. It will save time if you provide that info so the experts here can help you. Good luck!
  18. Thanks Anon! That sounds like the safest route! It will take me some time to download the kernel files as my ISP is overloaded and bandwidth stinks for last few days. I am all the way up to 3.5KBps on a 64KB so-called "cable" internet connection. At least every now and then if I get up at 0300 or so I can hit 80Kbps and that seems mega-fast!
  19. Thanks Irsach01 ! That sounds very simple. Just to be clear, are you saying you didn't even have to edit the vmlinux or initrd.img files at all? That means urpmi did everything for you? If so, very slick indeed! :)
  20. First, I'd rather install 9.1 but at my download speed (<1Kbs today) that won't happen. I will have to scrounge up a copy of the CD's when I am able. So, if I want to update the kernel per latest MD Security info it indicates you can use urpmi method and give a link to the webpage. I have read that and a couple relevant posts here. Before I try this later when connect speed is a bit better, I want to get some confirmation if anyone knows... From Mdksecure: QUESTION: Has anyone tried this method? If so, I am assuming that one of the two (or more) vmlinuz lettings must need to be set with the OLD kernel and the default/boot vmlinuz would be edited per above instructions and use a pointer to the NEW kernel that has been installed. Is that correct? That would allow one to choose which kernel at bootup as I understand this. Sounds like an easy setup, but hate to "hose my system" as some have indicated might happen. TIA!
  21. I certainly am a newbie, but I wonder if it could be related to the last minute security patch for e2fsprogs that ML came out with on 25 March MKDA-2003:003 ? It indicates 9.1 partioning is not compatible with older ML partitions. If you didn't reformat a 9.0 partition, I wonder if it might have mount problems under 9.1?
  22. Phunni, I will also post this because the info may help someone. Just up and at 'em this am. I downloaded your last two emails in Kmail and left on server and then downloaded them into outlook too. I could NOT open them in Kmail unless I did cmd line --decrypt of the file. The format of the email seems to be the issue. It comes as an attachment, not as the body of the email. I think the plugin will only work if the encrypted text is embedded as the normal text of the message. Normally an email client/pgp/gpg-plugin will do this automatically. So I suspect a setting in Evo might be the key to getting this to work. On the messages I sent from Kmail that I cc'ed myself on, my gpg message was the text and was NOT an attachment. As soon as I click on it to open it, it prompts for my pwd. That is the way it normally should work. (or has for me the last 10 yrs in DOS/windoze) Both of your messages that you sent on Sunday were not openable on Outlook under pgp using the plugins. Same as before, and same as Kmail, it sees two attached files, but is unable to open them directly. I copied the two files into the same directory and when I executed the small one, it prompts for pwd and opened the other one. So I have figured out how to deal with them, but it is pretty unhandy, time consuming and lacks style. :-) RE: Case of my email address. I setup that acct back in the days when case mattered in an email address. The internet standard was changed and case by convention is ignored, but under *nix of course case is an issue. Might be part of the problem. So we are making progress, but slowly. RE: PGP plugins for Outlook--PGP package comes with a PGP plugin for Eudora, OL, Netscape, etc and you just need to activate them in the mail client to use them. The plugins add a PGP menu in OL and make using it very simple and convenient.
  23. We're ROCKING! I got Kmail going using the gpg plugin/menu. The issue was with the key trust. Here's where I found the key info: http://webber.dewinter.com/gnupg_howto/eng...to-3.html#ss3.3 ://http://webber.dewinter.com/gnupg_ho...o-3.html#ss3.3 ://http://webber.dewinter.com/gnupg_ho...o-3.html#ss3.3 1) You have to even grant trust to your OWN key as the default does not do this. Since I imported a PGP key instead of making a new one using gpg, this was especially important. The key showed that it had no trust level assigned even though it was self-signed. 2) I had to grant trust to your key for it to work, and like you experienced, the gpg plug to Kmail is not very lenient and if you send to another address/ it won't work automatically so you must select the proper key manually. 3) The real clincher is you have to RESTART gpg to make the trust changes effective. We can test this, or maybe some vet on the board can tell us; To restart gpg, can we just type gpg at the cmd line? OR, do we have to do it the DOS/MS way and reboot? Since I left for church, I shutdown and when I restarted, I checked the keys and the trust had been changed to the new level. Voila! Now Kmail sees them just fine. For info--I am sending via Kmail and gpg, but using my 5 yr old PGP key. I sent test mails to myself from Kmail and can open and decrypt with PGP plugins in Outlook just fine so the cross-platform part works. What seems to be a weak spot is that the sending address must match the key's email, or the Kmail doesn't pick it up properly. (or at least I haven't got my filters configured to do so properly! ) Send me something Phunni! :D
  24. Thanks Phunni, I may try the gpg for Outlook later, but my main effort is to get away from using M$ and begin using Open Source solutions only. One problem area so far is that I need a VPN connection to my home office. They use a system that is not available for Linux. Theoretically an open source VPN should work, but it is a pretty baffling thing to setup and the sys admin says he doesn't have time to support only one Linux user out of several hundred. Guess I can understand that from his perspective, but leaves me on my own. Time wise, I have other priorities that keep me very busy, so the amount of time I can spend learning Linux security is limited. Still, I hate unsolved challenges... Btw, you can still download pgpi 7.0.3 and patch to 7.0.4 free from the pgpi.org site. Doesn't work on XP though if I remember correctly. It has plugins for OL, Eudora, etc too. That is what I use since the pgp.com is again commercial product except for the watered down free version.
  25. looks like Kmail has some problems with using gpg and pgp: http://kmail.kde.org/kmail-pgpmime-howto.html I am out scouting to learn more.
