  1. Well, I understand what you are saying, but I still stand by my point. From the way he explains it, it sounds like he is doing it simultaneously (as in mouse drag and middle click to copy). Granted, this is cannonfodder, and he probably isn't, but that is what he appears to be saying. (but I'll stop now :) )
  2. <nod> just making sure though because he said "when I use my middle button to copy text"
  3. Well, johnnyv probably said it better, but it sounds to me like you are combining both operations. To copy, you just drag the mouse over the text while holding down the left mouse button. To paste, you put the cursor where you want it in the editor, and then press the middle-mouse button.
  4. Just curious. Why are you copying it to a terminal, and not to a text editor or something?
  5. I disagree. Dolphins/porpoises are known to be smart, helpful and couragous. Sounds like pretty good qualifications to me. I mean, they fend off sharks, rescue humans, sweep for mines, what's so wimpy about that? Sea Wolf? It sounds like something a first year madison avenue intern would come up with as a name for a toy advertised during saturday morning cartoons. It doesn't engender any respect in me, quite the opposite, actually - but that's just my opinion. Mandrake is a plant, bamboo is a plant. Sounds reasonable to me, when put alongside the attributes of bamboo mentioned earlier.
  6. I wonder, if you had a version named "Herring," would it run around trying to eat/escape itself?
  7. Well, take heart. It's easy to fix. I don't have KDE or Gnome installed, but I think that in Konqueror you go to the View menu, and there will be a submenu in there for preview, and you can select what you want to preview. I imagine that it would be similar for Gnome/Nautilus. If it's not there, then try right-clicking above it and see if there is anything in the Context menu that pops up. I can't remember where it was, but do remember it was easy to turn off, so a little experimentation should work.
  8. after you've logged in to the virtual console (the black text screen) type dmesg all the the messages will scroll by again, but the last ones will stay visible. Or, if you want to see all of them, use: dmesg | less
  9. I used to use them. I loved them, but you're right - they're pricey and relatively slow. Unfortunately I don't have a SCSI adapter in my current computer so I can't use my Travan drive right now.

    Can only boot into KDE

I don't have KDE or Gnome installed at the moment, but don't both KDM and GDM have a box that allows you to select your default wm/environment as you are logging in?

    Can only boot into KDE

    I don't know how well it will apply to Mandrake, but here is my /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc #!/bin/sh # $Xorg: xinitrc.cpp,v 1.3 2000/08/17 19:54:30 cpqbld Exp $ userresources=$HOME/.Xresources usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap sysresources=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/.Xresources sysmodmap=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap # merge in defaults and keymaps if [ -f $sysresources ]; then xrdb -merge $sysresources fi if [ -f $sysmodmap ]; then xmodmap $sysmodmap fi if [ -f $userresources ]; then xrdb -merge $userresources fi if [ -f $usermodmap ]; then xmodmap $usermodmap fi # start some nice programs fluxbox #openbox #golem & #xclock -geometry 50x50-1+1 & #xterm -geometry 80x50+494+51 & #xterm -geometry 80x20+494-0 & exec xterm -geometry 80x66+0+0 -name login
  12. You say "so I Reboot" -- you don't indicate if you shut down properly, or hit the reset key, so I'm mentioning this: One of the things you should always try to do is use SysReq to shut down gracefully. if you are having problems, try this: Hold down both the Alt and the SysReq (sometimes marked Print Screen) and while holding them, press these keys, individually, in this order: R, S, E, I, U, B. This will attempt to terminate all running programs, synchronize your hard disks and reboot.
  13. Doesn't mandrake have it's own online training system? They used to, or is it pay now?

    What is "Emacs"?

It's whatever you want it to be. It can be extended with lisp and other languages. People use it as a web browser, for example. At its heart though, it's a text editor. I've been using emacs for many years, stretching back to micro-emacs on my old Atari computers and it's a wonderful program. I still prefer vi, personally though.
  15. Well, part of Intel (from 486 to Pentium, for example)& Microsofts decision was almost certainly based on the fact that you can't register numbers as tradmarks
  16. I'm using Athlon Thunderbird flags (Athlon 1200) here in Source Mage, and yes, they do make a big difference.

    unisntall

I think, if you only want to be able to uninstall later that you really only need configure and Makefile, but that really depends upon the program.
  18. I'll let someone else answer your removable drive question because I know there are other here that have them. This is from man fstab, in relation to the 0 0 The fifth field, (fs_freq), is used for these filesystems by the dump(8) command to determine which filesystems need to be dumped. If the fifth field is not present, a value of zero is returned and dump will assume that the filesystem does not need to be dumped. The sixth field, (fs_passno), is used by the fsck(8) program to deter- mine the order in which filesystem checks are done at reboot time. The root filesystem should be specified with a fs_passno of 1, and other filesystems should have a fs_passno of 2. Filesystems within a drive will be checked sequentially, but filesystems on different drives will be checked at the same time to utilize parallelism available in the hardware. If the sixth field is not present or zero, a value of zero is returned and fsck will assume that the filesystem does not need to be checked.
  19. Is it a different brand of cd? Also, is it a CD-R or CD-RW?
  20. In addition to the other things covered, the Qtopia-desktop is also available for Linux ftp://ftp.trolltech.com/qtopia/source/qto....6.0-1.i386.rpm
  21. What happens when you Shift-click on a media link? Although that's really for downloading binary files, and I think it would just save the file to your hard disk,
  22. have you tried the search at http://apps.kde.com ? You get a nice basic description, screen shots, comments, links to the homepage, etc.
  23. I don't really have a solution for you, but I've had similar things happen in the past, and I cleared them up without rebooting by: typing reset in the blind and hitting return or assuming you are in virtual console 1, go to virtual console 2 with Alt+RightCursorArrow, and then back with Alt+LeftCursorArrow (or use Alt-F2, Alt-F1)
  24. What a concept, install Linux just so you can run Windows spyware
  25. aru knows much more about it than me, but if I were doing it, I'd end up using &&, but that might be because I'm braindead.
