Yes it runs on Linux, (it was made using Mandriva!), it's GPL'd, and it's free. As for timescales, I've frozen the texts but am still testing the code. I'd like to release the new version in early February if possible, so it would be great if the translations were finished during January. But the release date isn't fixed in stone. @Yossarian: Hebrew would indeed be very interesting, but it depends on demand. As I said there are over 420 texts in total, so this would be a not insignificant effort on your part if you wanted to volunteer. I will raise the suggestion and see if anyone else is interested in contributing or using the application in Hebrew. I know that Hebrew is written right-to-left but I've no idea how much extra work I would have to make it possible.

I've seen the list of translators in the FAQs but it's not quite clear what kind of translators those people have volunteered for, and the list is pretty old so may not still be current. So rather than scatter PMs around, I thought a new thread might do the trick. I'm looking for help translating a number of key phrases for a GPL'd application. It's already available in a number of languages but there's a new version coming out and therefore there are several new bits of text which need translating, preferably by a native speaker. For these four languages (French, Italian, Spanish, Polish) there are about 40 bits of text to be added. Most of them are very short, like text for a button or a menu command. Even if you only want to do a handful of them, that would still be a great help. I can't offer you a cut of the profits but I can put your alias of choice in the credits page if you wish! If you're interested in helping, please reply here and we can sort out the files. PS/ Of course you can also volunteer if you speak a language other than the ones listed here, but then there won't be 40 or so bits of text, but instead 400+.

I don't think the problem is with the splits of the Sun JRE, I think it's to do with the splits of OpenOffice. But there are soooo many Ooo components and there are so many possible combinations I shudder to think how big a single monolithic OpenOffice package would be :o

Yes, mine is also a link: /etc/alternatives/java -> /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-sun/bin/java* But as I said I've tried every combination I can think of, including /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-sun/bin/, /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-sun, /usr/lib/jvm/jre/bin, /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-sun/jre/, /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-sun/jre/bin and so on and so on. It doesn't let me select the executable, just the folder. And each time it tells me that the folder I've selected doesn't contain a JRE...

Is there any way to stop OpenOffice Calc complaining about a missing JRE? When I try to run a macro it gives this error message every time, "please install a java runtime", even though I've got Sun's 1.6 JRE installed (java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.06-2mdv2008.1). So I go into Tools-Options and disable the "use java" box (cos I guess it doesn't need it), and all that does is replace the error message with a "you've disabled the java runtime, do you wish to enable it?" error message. :huh: So I re-enable the "use java" box, but the list to select my java runtime is empty (it doesn't detect my 1.6 runtime for some reason). So I try to use the "Add" dialog to add the path to my java - but whatever I use (/usr/bin, /etc/alternatives, /usr/lib/jvm/, /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-sun/, any of the bins, anything) it just says that the directory doesn't contain a JRE and I should choose another. I guess it shouldn't be a big deal but there was a dialog recently which spat out about 10 of these error messages one after the other, and it would be kinda nice to get rid of them...

Thanks for that, I gave it a go and sure enough K3b worked magically, creating an image on the hard drive, prompting to change the disc, writing it out and then automatically deleting the image. Neat! Next step may be a bit more complicated - what do I need to edit the video, let's say selecting a bit in the middle and making a separate file for that, selecting another bit to a separate file, and then combining files to make a new DVD? Can I do that straight from the DVD or do I need to expand it to an uncompressed format first and then recompress it again (ideally without losing quality) ?

That's odd. In your earlier post you said that showfoto and kuickshow worked fine and that only gimp had the problem. In any case, it's clear that the file (if you downloaded it from mub) isn't a gzip file and it doesn't start with 0x1f 0x8b. So either it's an obscure bug in Gimp (which is fixed in my 2008.1 release) or a bug in something that Gimp uses (which has also been fixed) or something more weird on your machine. I'd upgrade to a more recent Mandriva anyway, not only because of bug fixes like this but also more recent versions of all the applications, and more importantly security fixes (which I don't think are given for 2006 any more).

I had seen the "copy DVD" function in K3b but it looked like you needed two drives - it asked to select source drive and destination drive so I didn't think it was able to go via the hard drive (and "rip" sounded like a transcoding rather than a straight copy). Also Devede sounds cool, it was a bit of trouble to install (as both devede and dvdauthor have corrupted rpms on my mirrors, had to import them from another mirror in France). But it looks like it should be able to do what I need. It talks about "titles" though, do I need to chop the film up into separate files if I want to arrange them as "titles" on the DVD? And apart from the resolution there doesn't seem any way to control how much compression is used, ie how to squash the movie onto the DVD, right? Does it matter whether I choose PAL or NTSC?

I've got a couple of questions here, maybe they belong in a "multimedia / video" section but I guess "software" will have to do... Firstly, what's an easy way to copy a DVD? There's no DRM, it's just a home-made DVD from a friend's camcorder, and it plays in a regular DVD player (ie, it's not a data DVD with an mpg on it). So what's the best way to copy this to another DVD, which will also play in a regular DVD player? I assume it's not just as simple as copying each file over, right? I see K3b has an option for a "New Video DVD project", and I assume that's what I want, right? So can I just copy the files from the DVD to the hard drive, then use K3b to drag the files back into the same structure on a new video DVD project? (Note: this machine only has one optical drive) Anything else I should watch out for? Secondly, and this is probably more complicated, there's another friend who's taken a video with their HD camera. At the moment the film is just sitting in a 30 GB, apparently uncompressed, file, which sounds something like "DVRS" or something like that (they're not sure). So I'm guessing the first step is to transfer this 30 GB file to my Mandriva box, and use some tool to convert it and compress it down to fit on a DVD. Which tool(s) do I need, and how do I do it in an efficient way (ie not converting backwards and forwards between lossy formats)? How can I make sure that the resulting DVD will play in as many regular DVD players as possible?

Both pictures that you posted appear correctly here. For both pictures, the "file" tool recognises them properly as JPEG files, and gimp opens them without problem. If you download these pictures from this thread and you still have the same problems (file thinks that they're gzip files, and gimp can't open them) then there's something extremely strange with your system, and transferring files with another application apart from Konqueror won't do you any good. Are you sure you're having problems with the same files that you're showing us?

This sounds like it could be a KDE 4 "feature", can you tell us if you're using KDE 4 ? You should be able to download the photos from within Digikam, just look in the "Camera" menu and then "Browse media" to select where your card reader appears - then you get a nice thumbnail view of the photos where you can select which ones to download. (Disclaimer: I'm using 2008.1 and KDE 3 so things may be a little different here) About the photo permissions on the desktop, that's certainly very odd indeed. Did you run dolphin as root when you copied the files over? Are you sure they're read-only, ie what does the output of "ls -l Desktop" give you? Or if this is some funny KDE 4 thing then try downloading them to a new directory, rather than the desktop.

Try loading the photos into another application, like Firefox, or Konqueror, or showFoto, or any of the other picture viewing applications. Is Gimp the only application to have a problem with it? Do you get any other, more meaningful error messages from the other apps? 100% sure it's not the size of the file that's causing the problem. Where are the jpgs now, are they on your hard drive (and if so on what kind of partition), or on the memory card in a card reader, or where are you trying to open them from?

With 2008.1 the setting up of repositories got a lot easier - you can do it all from the gui. If it doesn't automatically ask you (as it should if you haven't got repositories set up already), just go to Options - Media Manager, click the "Add" button, and follow the instructions. This is probably the easiest way to do it.

K3b is definitely on the One CD for 2008.1. And you shouldn't be "looking for a download", just click it in the "add software" gui.

It's probably already installed, just look in the menu under "Tools".

I had exactly this problem with 2008 Spring, also on a Dell. Curiously this problem didn't appear when running from the live CD. The answer was to disable a service called kmilo (see full thread here) - although it turns out each user has to disable it, so it's probably better to uninstall it if possible.

Not as far as I know, no. I installed from the KDE One CD and never deliberately installed gnome afterwards. Of course I have several gnome packages, like libgnome2-2.22.0-1mdv2008.1 and libgnome-desktop-2_2-2.22.0-2mdv2008.1. But I can only log in to KDE. No, nothing with gnome in the title.

Update - it's not just firefox and thunderbird that are affected by this, also Gimp and Eclipse get supersized fonts in the same way (maybe they use the same fonts / widgets ?) KDE apps like Konqueror and Kate and Konsole are still unaffected. If I log out and log in, or I kill X with a Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, everything goes back to normal again. Any clues anyone?

If you installed the gcc-gfortran package then you should have an executable called /usr/bin/gfortran. So if you type gfortran in the console, it should find the executable. And it should complain that you haven't given it any input files: $ gfortran gfortran: no input files If this doesn't work for you, then either you haven't got gfortran installed, or you didn't type the "gfortran" command exactly right. To check whether you have got gfortran installed, try this: rpm -qa | grep fortran This should list your packages containing the word fortran. If this looks ok, try this: ls /usr/bin/gf* This should give you a list of files in your /usr/bin directory which start with "gf". At least two of these should have something to do with fortran. If this looks ok, you can try this: gfortran --version And this should tell you the version of gfortran you're running. I assume you know what to do from here on! ;)

Calm down, and read it again. KDE 4.2 is in beta and they're busy fixing bugs before its release. KDE 4.1 is a so-called stable release and has been for some time. The article doesn't contradict any of that, nor does it imply that the KDE team misled Mandriva.Whether 4.1 is/was a good move or not at the time is open to debate (I've not tried it), but let's not mix up the issues of KDE4 vs KDE3, AdamW's departure, distro (mis)management and so on. My personal take - I'm happy with 2008.1 and KDE3 for now. I think the screenshots of KDE4 look very cool and show a lot of promise, I'm looking forward to trying it out in the future. When 4.0 was released they said "wait for 4.1". When 4.1 came out, the general mood seemed to be to wait for 4.2. It'll be interesting to see what 4.2 looks like when it's ready for release (although it seems odd that the release date seems to be fixed by time, not by completion).

Might be too simple an idea, but.... shouldn't you have two ampersands && before your call to compiz --replace ? Otherwise they'll just run in parallel.
