  1. Hi, I am new at Linux, using Mandriva 2009 with Gnome, KDE and Xfce installed together. Firefox displays horrible fonts in the 3 systems. I have Firefox with the default fonts. I have tried to change them manually and didn't get better. I have FreeType installed plus adjusted my Mandriva for the best font quality display in the Font Manager. I have all the Windows fonts too, a total of 100 fomnts installed. Firefox looks absolutely horrible. The fonts not only look ugly but the sizes are absurd. Usually too small, unreadable many times, but the size of a same site changes every day... Any idea to improve this? Thanks [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  2. Thanks a lot, but doesn't work. It doesn't even open Nautilus... I guess I am doing something wrong if you all can do this paste in root thing, but I can't...
  3. Well, it may be easier but still doesn't work. Most of all I want to know how to paste as root in Nautilus. Does anyone know? Thanks!
  4. Thanks a lot to all and sorry but none of those solutions work. When I try your code in the terminal this is what it returns: [root@localhost yo]# cp /home/yo/skins2/* /usr/share/vlc/skins2 cp: target «/usr/share/vlc/skins2» is not a directory It says it is not a directory. The folder skins2 is within my user folder (named yo). It is corret I believe. Concerning the instructions from the Preferences Menu of VLC. When I get to MAIN INTERFACES there is not such an option named SKINS and no list anywhere. I entered Advanced Options mode before. I am using the latest version I believe as I got it from the URPMI engine. It is version 0.9.6, in case it is different from yours. You can see here that I managed to copy the skins (which I can not delete now...) but the folder skins2 doesn't exist. By the way... how can I delete them? I opened that Nautilus window from the Terminal by typing Nautilus after SU. Amazing the complication to change a skin in this program. Thanks again.
  5. Thanks to all. That folder .VLC doesn't exist. I know how to display the hidden folders but .VLC is not there and VLC is installed and running well. Apparently the only folder of VLC is within /usr/share/vlc Still doesn't work. I created a folder named "skins2" in my Desktop and placed all the .VLT skins inside. Then I opened the Console and typed su password cp /home/my user name/Desktop/skins2 /usr/share/vlc and doesn't work. I take care with the capital letters and so on, but no results... Any other suggestion? Thanks a lot again. I can live without the skins but I'd like to learn how to do this anyway.
  6. Thanks a lot! But it didn't work. I think that you meant to type NAUTILUS instead of KONQUEROR because I use GNOME. Right? Anyway I typed NAUTILUS, it opened, and tried to copy and paste the files navigating by inside Nautilus and again no permission... I must be doing something wrong for sure then but I have tried a hundred times a hundred things. Thanks again.
  7. Hi. I am new at Linux. Mandriva 2009 is my first experience. I try to install skins for VLC and it tells me to copy/paste them in certain folder. But I can't. It tells me that I don't have permission. I have tried a lot of things without success. Can you tell me how to do this, preferably in a graphic way? Besides I would oike to ask where can I find a complete and detailed USER MANUAL. I have been searching everywhere and I can't find it. The Help files in my Mandriva don't cover this subject of copy-pasting where root privileges are requiered. Where is the up-to-date and detailed and complete Manual? Thanks EDIT: One more qustion. Many times I find answers but for Ubuntu. The Ubuntu code is not the same as the one for Mandriva, right? You need to learn either one or another but they don't work for the other, correct? I think that this makes Linux even harder and more atomized for finding help. [moved from Software by spinynorman]

Thanks Yves. Yes I do that as well. But it's not only that, it's all the other reasons: 1- I definetely want to learn to install any program and not only the easy rpms. 2- I am very used to the Photoshop menus so using the Gimp will get on my nerves til getting habituated 3- There are many things from The Gimp which I personally don't like at all. I am trying this new 2.6 version and doesnt make a real difference. It is better because doesn't open tabs in the task bar but still you have these floating toolbars around. Is it possible to run photoshop or paint.net with Wine? I am trying to learn to use Wine but again, I understand nothing. This is desperating, really. And I never find solutions to anything I need to do like: - Learning to install programs - Fix Firefox so I can download things and even where I want them to be downloaded (what a luxury) - Install and use gnome-color-chooser so I can fix my taskbar for once - Know how to use Wine. - FIx the bloody VLC player which opens in two different windows no matters how many times I change the preferences and choose to open in only one - Learn where on earth is the VLC/skins folder to paste there some skins and get to use them in VLC one day. - Understand why VLC is the only player with which I can see avi movies. VLC is a really complicated and full of bugs player. - Understand why the volume of the sound is so low that I have to put it to the maximum and then it will make this annoying background noisy that I cannot fix no matters what I try so I have to shut the sound until I play something.

Thanks a lot scarecrow. However, Picasa is not what I need ( I already know it well). Neither do Irfanview or FastStone. I do a lot of graphic design. Not to the point of needing a top powerful program but something like Paint.Net can do. I mean, The Gimp would be perfect but it opens many WIndows and there are many strange functions to me. I just want to give Gimpshop a try. Concerning the codecs. I do have win32-codecs installed. Do I need to install VLC to watch avi movies? I still have to learn to use Wine, learn to install gnome-color-chooser and fix the absurd problem for which FIREFOX won't let me donwload or manage anything related to donwloads, not even define the folder for downloads in the Preferences menu. Thanks again.

Thanks Neddie, you are very nice. I can live without Frostwire or Limewire by now, i never liked those programs in Windows anyway and I have aMule by now. I would prefer to try to install Gimpshop or a similar alternative even with less functions and there is nothing. Do you know of a simple graphics editor that I can use instead of Gimp or Gimpshop? I don't need too much. Just a simple editor for transparencies, png images, accurate in the selections, etc. I also want definetely to install gnome-color-chooser. http://gnomecc.sourceforge.net/ One more question. I cannot see .avi movies. I can see .flv and hear .mp3 but not .avi. Do you know what can I do? Thanks a lot.

No, it's not typing a few lines of code what annoys me. It's not knowing how and not finding anyone who really wants to help. I still don't know how that thing works. I thought the tutorial of the Wiki was the solution but apparently the mystery and secret of how to install a program is impossible to know. If I loved Windows and the trojans I wouldn't be breaking my head and eyes against the screen trying to learn how to do things in Linux. Don't start with those classic bitter comments of linux fanatics because that's not my war. Computers for me are just a machine, a tool for which I have the same affection as I have for a microwave oven. I dont care if Gimpshop is dead two years ago if it still works in Mandriva. I am very used to Photoshop and the format of The Gimp gets on my nerves. Same about Limewire or Frostwire.

Tell me you are joking. You mean that for installing very popular programs like Gimpshop, Frostwire, Limewire, etc, you have to do all of that and study a degree in computer programming? Besides why then these tutorials in Mandrivausers Wiki if they are not correct? You are the first one mentioning all of this. So, is it possible for normal people without any knowledge of computer programming to download and install easily normal programs like we all do in Windows? Or is Linux actually limited to very few programs and you have to stick to them? I mean, can I run Gimphsop, Forst/Limewire etc or not? This is very disappointing. Computer use is about programs after all. I dont even use Gimpshop or Frostwire in Windows, they are second class. I would choose Photoshop and Ares but they dont even exist in Linux. Same about the browser Maxthon and most programs. This is where I got Gimpshop. Could you please check it and tell me what I have to do? http://www.gimpshop.com/download.shtml Thanks!

When you say file you mean the name of the program? I am trying to install Frostwire and tried to do what you say by typing ./frostwire but doesn't work. What can be wrong? This is crazy.
