  1. Have you tried running it on wine?
  2. Hi, I'm looking for a free 100% Matlab compatible software for linux with good reputation. Is there one? Currently i think of Octave or Scilab. Has anyone used these programs? Thanks
  3. Yep, mandriva has a lot more packages, but is relatively buggy, and the last version (2008) doesn't like my hardware so much. About kernels: does mandy have more than one? How can i chose the one i need? Where do i get them, from urpmi mirrors?
  4. Open a terminal, su to root and try the following: urpmi drakwizard This should install what you want along with all the dependencies, though i'm not shure.
  5. Kubuntu gets crazy for me only after updates. I stopped trying to fix it, got PCLinuxOS instead and everything is fine there...
  6. In my opinion "plastic" is the nicest theme for kde that is available and i don't want to use another. Or, i could use Gnome. The problem is not in in the theme, but in kcontrol as i understand, because it doesn't remember my choice after i turn shadows off.
  7. The Linux Foundation Linux Desktop Workgroup is conducting a survey. The information from this survey will assist the Linux Foundation Desktop Linux workgroup to focus on areas of development that are important to you. The results of this survey may also be valuable to your business. The 2007 Linux Desktop/Client Survey asks you to answer a few questions based on your company's desktop/client plans and not necessarily your personal desktop usage. https://www.linux-foundation.org/en/2007ClientSurvey
  8. Happened to me either on 2007.1. It seems that there are some old KDE bugs that are not corrected from version to version ...
  9. For some reason, it didn't work. Oh, and if i use Ctrl-Alt-K - it works only one way, because after i switch, "k" is no more "k" ...
  10. I'm now just curios, as everybody claim that not using swap is bad, but none knows exactly why. I would like to hear a proffessional's opinion. scarecrow, can you post a link to wat Con Kolivas said, or it is too old? About the RAMx2 rule - i think it is another Linux myth, although Fedora installer will warn you if you leave less swap then twise a RAM.
  11. I do not agree with you. Let's say i have 256mb of ram and another 512mb of swap, in total i have 768mb, less than amount of ram on an average up-to-date pc. Lets suppose i ran a process that swallowed all of that 768mb. The system will freeze? In that case it will be one major bug for an OS - i mean there should be some mechanism that prevent RAM overflow. A good programmer would have that in mind and i suppose that at least one of the whole bunch of people who develop linux kernel could have think of that.
  12. I like the font you use in a terminal. What font is it?
  13. What is the problem with turning swap off? I used FC4 with no swap for a long time and nothing wrong happened. I even sure it felt a little bit quicker.
  14. Can you sharpen your question, i can't understand what text you would like to remove. If it is the kicker button text (the "Menu" in lower left corner) take a look here, it worked for 2007.1 don't know what about 2008.
  15. http://rudd-o.com/archives/2007/10/02/tale...ow-to-fix-that/ Found a link to this article on PClos forum. What do you think, can it really improve the performance significantly? Will i get the same results by turning the swap partition off?
  16. I'll check that, thank you... P.S. about usb: i think it is a kernel related, because on kernels prior to 2.6.20 i had no problems but Kubuntu 7.04 and now Mandriva2008 do me some problems... P.P.S. What about menu shades? It is realllllllyyy annoing, and it seems like nobody knows the cure...
  17. Just installed Mandriva 2008 One. The first thing i've noticed was Fedora like DNA spiral wallpaper. Nice, though not so original. Default gnome icons (as seen from Firefox dialogs) are also taken from fedora. Some bugs i've noticed immediatly: Firefox' spell checker marks every singly word i type, i know my english is not perfect, but not like this. If i stick a USB disk-on-key to a usb port - nothing happens. Than suddenly after 20 minutes or so Mandriva detected it and puted an icon on the desktop. Despite that, it takes ages to browse the USB content. The old bug i had in 2007.1 didn't disappear: menues still drop shadows even though i unchecked this option in kcontrol, that stubborn checkbox keeps checking itself every time. I'm a little disappointed... Do you get the same behavior as i do?
  18. After some reading in Ubuntu and Kubuntu forums and trying things i discovered the following: - if i add "irqpoll" option to grub boot entry, the usb works as it should, but the system stalls after a minute or so - if i remove "acpi=force" & "irqpoll" option from grub entry, usb works fine but the system hangs on shutdown (the hds are turned off though, i hear it) - adding "acpi=off noacpi" option doesn't improve the shutdown process So i guess i should remove any kernel options that i have added previously ("acpi=force") and add something else that will allow my pc to shutdown properly. What might it be?
  19. I'm using Kubuntu for some time now, and i have a problem: when i plug in any usb device, nothing happens. I'm not asked what to do with it, and it doesn't mount the device. I've messed with the system services earlier, so maybe that is the reason, but i cant find any service that might be responsible for that. What should i do?
  20. Agree. I like both Gnome and KDE, and i feel comfortable in both environments. I'm steel trying to decide which is better... From personal experience, Gnome works better and has fewer bugs than KDE on Mandriva 2007.1. KDE on Kubuntu 7.04 and PClos2007 is supreme. I can't remember any particular bug that i have found in Ubuntu or Fedora (4 to 7) in Gnome (Fedora's KDE was excellent too). Most Gnome themes are nicer than KDE themes (in my opinion), and are easy to install. Gnomebaker didn't work well for me on Mandriva Spring. I use Kubuntu now for a month or so as my primary OS. So as ianw1974 said, give Gnome a try for some weeks and than decide.
  21. I'm downloading a new copy of live cd, hope it will solve the problem. The cd-rom is quiet new, and it doesn't have problems reading CDs in general.
