Hi there, i have some questions regurding my memory usage. I'm running Gnome 2.6 on a pretty slow mashine (see below) and that is what my system monitor shows: - sould swap space be partially full when i still got some room in RAM? - what is exact porpuse of swap? - the high peaks in cpu history => me moving a window, it can jump even up to 100%. I've rcently moved to GNOME and now want to alter its appearence. It is possible to download GTK themes and METACITY. What is the difference between this two types and on what part of a window are they responsible? Thanks.

I want to clear something here: - i like windows as it is - i do like linux - i don't want multi-desktops in windows, i just asked for advice, becouse i've never used this feature ...and thank you

Does anybody here use multiple desctops? I'm used to windows and i can't understand why would somebody need several desktops on a single display. But, if the option presents in all desctop managers then it should be worthy. How do you work with it? [moved from Talk-Talk by spinynorman]

Yes, i understand what you're saying. During last two weeks i reinstalled various versions of MDK for 3 times, all becouse my unsuccessfull experiments. I started with installing xfce4 on 10.1 and it didn't want to work properly: i had missing taskbar and it crushed randomly. I thought that's about time for me to upgrade to 2006, so i updated 10.1 - total disaster. MCC crushed, urpmi didn't work, KDE stalled... I formatted and reinstalled. 2006 is a good peace of software, but terrebly slow, even with xfce4 that i mannaged to install eventually. And then, i went back to 10.1 - that never coused me any trouble. If i'll have to reinstall something one more time - there is a good chanse that i would kill someone ==> P.S. If i'll change my mind, is one CD enough for updating from 10.1 to 10.2? Thanks

What version of KDE/GNOME does it use? I afraid that newer versions will slow me down...

Yes, i could download 2005LE, but it takes time, and i allready have 10.1 that covers all my needs, so why bother? I've tried xfce, but it behaves weardly for some reason and the most important - i don't like it. I think i'm addicted to kde/windows look

...well at second thought its not. KDE 3.4 is very heavy, and all system barely 'moves' on my pc, espetially when opening many tabs in FireFox. I think i go back to 10.1, although slow but not as 2006.

Yesterday i updated my media with urpmi, and then after rebooting, the screen went wrong again. I checked the xorg.conf & found that it became what it was before i applied the changes. Is this normal?

I've done that before editing xorg.conf, didn't work. Tried several 1280x1024@60/75/74 options - same result.

I have that package installed and KDE Control Center does the same, i mean it shows the options that i've seen in the xorg.conf. I remember that with 2005LE i had the same problem. I think there are 2 possibilities: 1) MDK 10.1 has better tdfx video driver 2) MDK 10.1 uses older version of xorg that still can handle my card Can i install some 10.1 RPM on 2006 that is somehow connected to the issue?

Since i'm not a Linux pro, i'm using it for learning & some office tasks, mainly internet and for backuping really important staff.

Is there some program that automaticly configures the display? How does Linux configure the display after the installation?
