  1. GRUB is considered to be better than LILO and I'm familiar with grub better, so i can help you in future. Now after you switch to grub just reboot and see if this solves the problem. If not - insert the first Mandriva disk and while booting pick an option to run it as a system rescue disk (again i did this a long time ago, so i can't say more presicely, sorry). Then there is an option to reinstall/repair the bootloader - pick it. It should reinstall your previously chosen GRUB. I had a similar problem in the past, my bootloader was rubbish an this worked for me flawlessly. If this works - I'll tell you how to edit GRUB to load Windows by default, piece a cake. Good Luck.
  2. In order to change the bootloader you should enter the Control Center (mcc). There you should find it under system-->bootloader category (or something similar, i'm not using mandriva now). There is a combo-box where you should be able to do that.
  3. I got this reply: [root@ilia-fc4 ilia]# glxinfo | grep direct direct rendering: No OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect What now?
  4. I think I don't have a 3d support on my 3dfx Mighty Banshee video card under FC4. My guess is based on some facts: 1. some 3d screen savers run exetremely slow if at all; 2. Picasa's special effects don't work 3. some linux games don't work either my xorg.conf: Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Default Layout" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" EndSection Section "Files" RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb" FontPath "unix/:7100" EndSection Section "Module" Load "dbe" Load "extmod" Load "fbdevhw" Load "glx" Load "record" Load "freetype" Load "type1" Load "dri" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "us" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" VendorName "Monitor Vendor" ModelName "L1750SQ" DisplaySize 340 270 HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0 VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0 Option "dpms" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "tdfx" VendorName "Videocard vendor" BoardName "Banshee (generic)" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Videocard0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 16 Modes "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 24 Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection EndSection Section "DRI" Group 0 Mode 0666 EndSection How can i enable 3d support? 5. Does anaconda find other OSes allready installed (because in fc4 it didn't)?
  6. I think we should ask arctic to make his review of FC6 like he had done previously.
  7. Yes.... Sounds familiar? :P P.S. I did the same when FC5 was released, installed FC4 two days before...
  8. Copying - is a important stage in a learning process, so there is nothing wrong with it. They actually did a good work on IE7: they managed to copy both FF and Opera (the look espetially). The GUI and usability improved dramaticly. FireFox is still better, but good work after all.
  9. I got: 1. Fedora 2. Mandriva 3. Ubuntu 4. Debian and i use fedora, amazing...

    GIMP it!

  11. Yes, it should. Check up your bios settings though.
  12. If you'll use PC133 ram it will work fine. I have a single 128mb 133hz SDRAM and two 64mb 100hz SDRAM and everything is ok. The clock rate will be set to the lowest availible RAM that is 100hz in our case. I'm using a low specs PC myself and I think that Mandriva 2006 was slower (and probably 2007 will be too) on it than some other distros (having exactly the same configuration). Eventually I chose Fedora Core 4 although it was not the newest at that time. But this is a personal opinion. I also noticed that KDE feels a little bit faster that Gnome on a slow CPUs while the usability is pretty much the same. You should consider also to use some lightweight DE like XFCE, FluxBox, OpenBox and others, but they are slightly harder to configure. Try to disable the swap partition, it might make things a little faster too. Good luck!
  13. That is exactly what i have done, thank you anyway! So far everything is ok, no security problems.
  14. I started using linux because i was curious about it and infected by it since 2005. I use windows occasionally too, mostly because I have to use some proprietary software that doesn't run on Linux. In general - linux covers all my needs.
  15. I like the keyboard ... and you forgot to mettion a printer ... :P
  16. What does this string mean "189.163.152.10:3012 to 10.0.0.1 TCP:37798" ? 189.163.152.10:3012 - what's that? IP:TCP_port? and this one: "Unallowed access from 00-0E-2E-60-89-41" Someone whose NIC MAC is 00-0E-2E-60-89-41 tries to connect to my router through wireless network?
  17. I looked in my router's log and seen this: I have a wireless router, DHCP, MAC filtering and had an aMule working. What are all that unallowed activities? What would you recomend me to do? Thanks.
  18. The largest Internet media company in the world, Yahoo, announced recently that it will open its e-mail program for outside developers, a move that marks the beginning of a new era for the Sunnyvale-based giant. The company said on Friday it planned to give away the underlying code to Yahoo Mail, one of the crown jewels of its business, in a bid to encourage software developers to build new applications based on e-mail. Full article here.

  20. I'm not a pro, but could it be because gnome tries to access the swap partition? I would check that by disabling it... If it is an option at all
  21. My gnomish KDE desktop. Still trying to get used to KDE. Gnome themes are much prettier than most KDE themes, so I'm doing my best to copy my old gnome's look.
