  1. Thanks, pmpatrick. That thread is very useful. It implies the headache I was fearing. That that guy solved his problem is great, but those and worries me, given that I had some probs with iee1394 inteface hijacking "eth0" alias without my assistance.
  2. thanks, scarecrow. What those "some multicontrollers" would be? I do not have a separate FW controller, there is one "onboard", is that what you mean? I own an Abit Ultra motherboard with an Nvidia nForce-4 chipset. There is a forcedeth module that gets loaded, and it dioesn't complain at anything. Still wondering if it is risky to cough up thse extra €25 for firewire connectivity....
  3. I am going to get an external harddrive. From other threads I understood there is not much trouble to expect from a USB drive (please correct me if I'm wrong). But what about Firewire? I do not own any firewire devices, so I have a pretty vage Idea how it functions. I noticed that this interface behaves like a network interface, in both Linux anf Windws, but thatś it. So, my question is: is thre going to be headache to make it work? (apart from the fact that my internal hd drive is unlikely to saturate those 400/800 mB/s anyway... or am I missing something here, too?).
  4. I'd say there aren't many words that would not sound/look/be easily transformed into sometthing silly in one language or another, and distro's names are no exception. Thre are just tto few letters out there! :D
  5. I had an impression urpmi fetches packages "per transaction". Usually in small installs/updates that will be one transaction, indeed, but sometimes I observe several "batches" of download-prepare-install cycles. In any case, running urpmi --test package-to-install-or-upgrade will download all needed RPMs to the cache (and check whether thety can be installed, but don't take "installation is possible" as a "yes"). Subsequent command w/o "--test" will install them from the cache. I am not sure about the size of the cache, though. It seems to be big enough to fit KDE. hth
  6. quote from man wget: The command line switch to continue downloading is -c or --continue. You don't have to specifically "pause" the download.

    euro key

alt-gr+F4 just closes the window :D I played a bit with layouts. The € (and in fact alt-gr key code) is available only in "intl" variant of en-us. This is type where you don't get (back)ticks and double-quotes immediately, but have to press space bar first. I have not decided yet whether I want that, have to see which other symbols became available. In the meantime, while looking for €€'s :) I found a place in KControl where I set up fancy keys on for my keyboard, such as voulme up/down, next song, etc. Bingo! that have been bothering me for a while.

    euro key

No, that doesn't work either. I found in Kcontrol where you can "assign" the euro key to keys e, 5 or 2, but it doesn't work. I guess, my alt-gr does not produce the right code. I tried ctrl-alt (in win 3.11 this used to be the same key code) as a prefix - nope. Could also be due to multiple keyboard layouts, though. But thanks anyway!

    euro key

Now, has anyone found out in 3 years how to type the € ? At the moment I have to copy-paste it from a document. I have " €" on button 5 on my keyboard, so I tried AltGr+5, it didn't work :)
  10. to add my two cents: You also have to open ports in your firewall: 580x fo access via Java applet and 590x for access via a stand-alone vnc client. Replace the "x" with the display number from Step 1) of Swapnerd's post. You may want to open a few ports, not just one. To open the ports, go to MCC-> Security ->Firewall, and click "advanced" button, to enter the ports numbers manually, because VNC ports are not on the list with checkboxes. To enable ports for displays 1 through 5, for instance, add: 5900:5905/tcp 5800:5805/tcp For stand-alone vnc client and access via java applet, respectively.
  11. Ianw1974, perhaps that depends on the model/driver. I have a Cannon 4200 printer, and it prints texts pretty darn black. I set colour/saturation to -10% , and kept contrast/brightness on the standard level, could that be the trick? I noticed that MCC printer setup does not go along very well with Turboprint drivers, though. Printerdrake sets everything to print very faint (and mirrorred). In general, I can only recommend the printer I have, given you are prepared to shell those extra €30 for the driver. The model I have is also rated as one of the cheapest in costs per page, among inkjet printers [available on the NL market, wrt original ink].
  12. There is also Glabels to edit covers. Also GIMP has a script-fu to generate CD round mask, that can be filled with stuff. I use that and OO Draw for making CD/DVD faces. In Draw you can have outline, borders on one layer that is not printed, and the actual CD design on another, printable, layer.
  13. hi, Thac, Zé, I installed KDE 3-5, x86_64 version, and it works! It's great, it's beautiful! It is indeed great work of yours, thank you very much! I had to start installation a few times, because of unresolved dependencies. With each new run I got less and less of conflicts & failed transactions, and eventually it converged to success. I am not sure this was the right way to update :) I had some issues with kmail, kontact, korganizer, during and after the update, so the advice to copy .kde is very useful!
  14. Thank you guys for the reply. Another user is the last resort: too much hassle with rwxrwxrwx , not something I would like to be concerned about.
  15. Thank you, Thac. So far it appears to have helped to remove and re-add all sources I will make another go this weekend.
  16. Hello! I access my home desktop via VNC, using vnscerver. My desktop resolution is 1920x1440, and that makes it pretty slow for remote access, as I have only 1Mb up channel. For the sake of efficiency in remote access I had to remove the nice wallpaper and all those effect that make using a linux desktop a pleasure. I start VNC with --geometry=1280x960, but then I get HUGE letters and window borders, not nice at all, and it doesn´t fit... In any case I can use max. 1280x1024 resolution, as this is what the remote PC is capable of. Is there any way to setup, say, a "profile" for the VNC, so that when I access KDE remotely, I would het settings for a smaller resolution (smaller fonts, squared theme, no animared effects, etc), and keep my local desktop smooth and sleek? Or is there a way to start a KDE session with a different config file? I don't know where to look. I use Mandriva 2006, vncserver for i586, and access it from a remote windows box using realvnc.
  17. Hi, Thac. I also tired to see whether it would install with SMART, and SMART said: Urpmf says that perl(kdocParseDoc) is part of kdelibs-3.5.1 package, though. Looks like my RPM storage is not in order, I did rpm --rebuilddb, but it did not help.
  18. Could that be an nvidia module not installed in the new kernel?
  19. Hi, Thac, Zé, first, thank you for caring about us poor 64-bit desktop users! I made a go to update to KDE-3.5.1 , by adding the mde repository, and then I tried "urpmi --auto-select" and later "urpmi kdebase-3.5.1 " In both cases I get first a list of packages that cannot be installed, like Some package requested cannot be installed: kdeaddons-3.5.1-1.mdk2006.0.mde.x86_64 (due to unsatisfied kdebase[>= 1:3.5.1-1.mdk2006.0.mde]) kdeaddons-searchbar-3.5.1-1.mdk2006.0.mde.x86_64 (due to missing kdeaddons-3.5.1-1.mdk2006.0.mde.x86_64) kdeartwork-3.5.1-2.mdk2006.0.mde.x86_64 (due to missing kdebase-3.5.1-3.mdk2006.0.mde.x86_64) kdebase-3.5.1-3.mdk2006.0.mde.x86_64 (trying to promote kdebase-common, kdebase-common, kdebase-common, kdebase) kdebase-kate-3.5.1-3.mdk2006.0.mde.x86_64 (due to unsatisfied kdebase-progs[== 1:3.5.1-3.mdk2006.0.mde]) kdebase-kdeprintfax-3.5.1-3.mdk2006.0.mde.x86_64 (due to unsatisfied kdebase-progs[== 1:3.5.1-3.mdk2006.0.mde]) ... and about 20 more. Ok, I tried [root@kokoc /]# urpmi --test lib64kdecore4 The following packages can't be installed because they depend on packages that are older than the installed ones: libkdebase4-3.5.1-3.mdk2006.0.mde lib64kdeaddons1-3.5.1-1.mdk2006.0.mde lib64kdeaddons1-searchbar-3.5.1-1.mdk2006.0.mde Continue? (Y/n) Some package requested cannot be installed: kdeaddons-searchbar-3.5.1-1.mdk2006.0.mde.x86_64 (due to missing libkdecore4-3.5.1-4.mdk2006.0.mde.i586) kdeartwork-3.5.1-2.mdk2006.0.mde.x86_64 (due to missing lib64kdebase4-3.5.1-3.mdk2006.0.mde.x86_64) ... and more-or-less the same stuff about unsatisfied dependencies. Is it me, or this can be fixed/workarounded somehow?
  20. Progress report of sudden persisten kernel panics (SPKP), for the record: Yesterday I had the nerve to add Thac's repo's and update (as I remember to have had much less kded crashes with mde packages, or at least it seemed so). So, as a result I got a familiar hosing some time after Feb 1 07:49:41 kokoc kernel: [__nosave_end+129662976/2132242432] (nv_interrupt+0x0/0xe0 [sata_nv]) Feb 1 07:49:41 kokoc kernel: [<ffffffff88031000>] (nv_interrupt+0x0/0xe0 [sata_nv]) Feb 1 07:49:41 kokoc kernel: [__nosave_end+136018336/2132242432] (nv_nic_irq+0x0/0x4f0 [forcedeth]) Feb 1 07:49:41 kokoc kernel: [<ffffffff886409a0>] (nv_nic_irq+0x0/0x4f0 [forcedeth]) Feb 1 07:49:46 kokoc kernel: irq event 217: bogus return value 2f43e39 Feb 1 07:49:46 kokoc kernel: handlers: I checked what I had installed. I found that among other installed packages there was an ATI dkms (which compiles itself into kernel). I have an nvidia chip, but this one must've gotten into my OS via some dependencies. I de-installed it, and so far my PC behaves (has been doing 80% CPU time on a dual core, hugh), though I am not sure whether one can indeed remove smth from the kernel... ? This could be a coincidence, though, because just the same as the first time, SPKP happened only some time after the update, Another thing that can bork the kernel is ivtv. Persistent kernel panics, I think, can be reproduced by the following: mix up filenames for the firmware loaded by ivtv (I got lost somewhere in the path original_gibberish_name->name_for_version_0.4.0 -> name_for_last_version). Finally, one more use of ivtv for inducing kernel panics is to replace some of the kernel's own *.ko modules (like tveeprom.ko, tuner.co etc) with those created by ivtv compilation. This is less severe, at least It did not require full cycle of install smth else - reinstall Mandriva from scratch. It looks like at one moment I had done the two bad things: updated ivtv driver (and copied its *.ko files to /lib/modules/blah ) and installed some dkms * rpm packages. Though this doesn't explain why kernel panics persisted over install with formatting ...
  21. Red Knuckles, if its' not that you installed Mandriva over ubuntu, it looks like you have the problem that Mandriva includes only itself in the bootloader menu, plus any windows partitions. If you use GRUB loader for both mandriva and ubuntu, to get acess to Ubuntu OS you need to edit your Mandriva bootloader settings in /boot/grub/menu.lst. title linux kernel (hd0,4)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda5 splash=verbose resume=/dev/sda6 splash=silent vga=788 initrd (hd0,4)/boot/initrd.img That's a typical entry for an OS in the grub loader, you need to make a copy of such an entry in your menu.lst and modify it. For ubuntu you have to change (0,4) to (0,x), where x is the sequential number of your ubuntu partition on the disk. Looks like you have to use (0,0). The other change is the root destination. Obviously, it should be root=/dev/hda1 in your case. I find it helpful to (a) mount ubuntu partition to, say, /ubuntu (b) open /ubuntu/boot/grub/menu.lst and copy the appropriate lines from there. hope this helps.
  22. I'm sure to make another go at kernel compile ... I was wondering, if there was more to it than compile - install - mkinitrd - copy bzImage and System.map . I noticed that /boot containes config files of stock kernels as well, and if I copy mine config-2-6-15urlm there, they disappear. Also System.map of my custom version disappeared. Is this normal? (i though that was the reason for system hangigng).
  23. dkms is installed. UPD: I removed dkms, just in case I actually cannot say "i compile everything myself" , I "just" need a certain database and kernel, the latter for my TV card support. The problem seems to related to grub or initrd or whatever is relevant to the boot menu (I used grub in all cases): I, after installing SUSE, added mandy entries to SUSE's boot menu, and so far 2.6.12-15mdksmp is working (though a quarter of an hour says nothing, but It passed e2fsck, which previously produced kernel panics). SUSE's boot loader is installed on /dev/sda7 , and in previous cases it was something else, like MBR or /dev/sda5 (how to check it? Suse just told me where it would put it).
  24. It is broke from scratch. I mean, I just install everything by default (at least its doesn't take that long, thanks). The last smp- kernel I mentioned, I compiled it in this afterlife was on ubuntu in /dev/sda5, I used the same .config file when doing it). Now, after a fresh install, I log in into the new install, do quickly init 3, then install kernels 2.6.12-12mdk and 2.6.12-15mdk w/o smp, and those are the only kernels I can use in Mandy at the moment. I removed Nvidia from the list, so no modules are compiled when booting a new kernel. Now we (Mandriva and me) are obviously missing something.
  25. Progress report... Now I am positive the hardware is Ok. I installed Windows on the small partition, it sees both cores ok. Among other linuces (thank gos there are plenty to chhose from) I tried Fedore Core 5 Test2 (would freeze while formatting, but since I did not like the process, I did not repeat more than tree times :-) I just installed SUSE 10.1 beta on that spare partition, and it runs OK, too. (that's the only distribution that did not complain about usb device 00:0000:02:00, which turned out to be the usb keyboard! :-) Anyway, suppressing my wish to tell about all those distro's and their installations, I was wondering what next. Is there anything else I could do to save my Mandriva installation? Anyone to suggest something, or point me to another mailing list/forum?
