  1. You should write those after you login in console. I thought you can login. what video card do you have? It seems to me that Mandriva is trying to start the x server but somethings wrong. If you are an ATI user that could be a problem since ATI drivers are known to suck.
  2. Seems like you need to setup your video hardware. First try startx That should start the x server. In case it doesn't, which is likely, try to setup your video card with XFdrake .
  3. You should check the downloaded ISOs and the burned CD too. To check the ISO you should use the md5 or sha file which is in the same directory the ISO is. There are a few programs which can check md5 files. You can use e.g. Total Commander in Windows if you already have it or a command line tool under Linux called md5sum.
  4. There is a package called mandriva-doc-Drakxtools-Guide-en in the repos. Since you don't have a working mcc or so I understood you have to use the command line to install it. So launch Konsole or Xterm or any other terminal (they are under System\Terminals in the menu). Type su that will ask the root's password. Type it in. Note that the password won't appear on the screen. Then type urpmi mandriva-doc-Drakxtools-Guide-en that will install a html guide about the graphic configuration utilities of Mandriva Linux. There are Spanish, German, French and Italian translations in case you're not a native English speaker.
  5. To answer your first question then: the file should be in /usr/share/WindowMaker/ and\or $HOME/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/ If that doesn't help then post or attach that file here.
  6. This news was posted on Dec 13 2006. You should check more often the main page.
  7. I just read about this in hup.hu and I think a little clarification could be useful. It was for me. So this mobo does not come with LinuxBIOS from the manufacturer. You can just download and flash LinuxBIOS onto this board. But then you won't be able to use Windows.
  8. It's an old game so you may heard about it. Anyway Linux Game Publishing made the Linux port of Knights and Merchants. It will be sold for 25 pounds. See the announcement. You can already download a demo from here. source: hup.hu
  9. Don't understand. What did you try? Anyway I couldn't solve the problem on my own. And currently I use KDE so I forgot about this until now.
  10. This is it: http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Mother...me=GA-M57SLI-S4 Bios is just one thing. How good is this Mobo (quality). From what I heard Gigabyte is not the best ever MOBO manufacturer.
  11. AI are the banners hosted on your server? Because I put one in my sig as you can see. It's only 7kb but I guess it could add up to a few hundred kb or even Mb everytime one of my post appears on somebody's screen. Should I use a public server instead? If yes can you recommend one? MUB doesn't allow me to upload a banner pic or at least I can't find where it is.
  12. Compiz is not themeable. At least that version in the 2007 is not. You can change the color of the window borders but that's about it.
  13. Where did you get eclipse? If from the Mandriva repos then forget it, and all java programs from the Mandriva repos btw. Java wasn't open sourced when 2007 came out and Mandriva policy was to put only FOSS software into the Free version. So they compiled all their java software with a Free JVM. That's why Azureus doesn't work also. Download and install Eclipse from its homepage instead. After you've done that you can install cdt via the Help menu: http://download.eclipse.org/tools/cdt/releases/eclipse3.1/
  14. In the case of 2007 the Standard members can also download the PP version of 2007. Standard mebers can usually download a 4 CD version which is the 3 CDs of Free version + 1 CD with propietary stuff. This year Mandriva has made a mistake and the Standard club members installation required the 5th CD. Mandriva acknowledged the mistake and Standard members are allowed to download the full 5 CDs of PP. Note that this will probably change with 2007.1. Or probably won't because 2007.1 will have a public non-free repo so they have to give something to the Standard members.
  15. The newer version will be an updated 2007 hence the name 2007.1. You can update 2007 without paying since the Power Pack is the Free version + some propietary apps. So the software is basically the same. Plus 2007.1 (aka Mandriva Spring) will have a public non-free repo which will contain propietary drivers and maybe Flash too. So the only reason to buy PP is if you don't have broadband at home (or wherever you use it). Or if you are a gamer. 2007 is supported over a year. If you don't wanna upgrade then you don't have to. Vendor lock-in doesn't work in the open source world. Don't be afraid of that. One more thing if you chose to buy PP read the Errata. It has a solution for the LinDVD problem. For a Cedega account you need to ask in the club forum.
  16. That means the download is okay. Did you check the burned disc? The CD\DVD burner software you used should do it.
  17. Thank it to hup.hu. I just copy the news here.
  18. Seems like you need to setup your video card. When you log on as root type XFdrake and setup your video card\monitor.
  19. There are distros which can be run from a pendrive. AFAIK Mandriva Flash is not downloadable don't know why. Don't know how to install to a pendrive either.
  20. ...is false. Two very interesting articles were written about hard disks in the last week. One is from Google. They analyzed about 100,000 disk drives. Their results are surprising to say the least. Briefly MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) SMART is not smart etc. You can read the full study here (pdf), or read a brief summary here. The second article is from Bianca Schroeder of CMU's Parallel Data Lab. She also looked at 100,000 drives including HPC clusters at Los Alamos and the Pittsburgh Supercomputer Center, as well as several unnamed internet services providers. She also had some very interesting experiences: costly enterprise drives are not at all more reliable than the drives we use. RAID 5 is not safe etc. You can read the full study here, or read a brief summary here. source: hup.hu
  21. If you want to reduce the startup time that basically means you have to change the system configuration and save those changes = you have to make your own live cd. To save the config details you have to use e.g. a pendrive AFAIK. But why not use a Linux distro which is directly running from a pendrive instead?
  22. I have no more ideas. You can check your security settings but that's just a guess. Mine has installed flawlessly in GUI mode.
