  1. Hello. When i log out of KDE, the screen goes blank (which is good) then a desktop appears for 7 seconds or so, then log out proceeds back to the gdm (as it is supposed to.) Any ideas why? [moved from Installing Mandrake by spinynorman]
  2. Hey all, my usb mouse response is v slow - and very annoying. I have played with the settings - and cannot seem to get it going as good as it was in 10.1. have tried mousedrake - and chosen usb mouse microsoft explorer (cause i have one!) and the shell reports: FATAL: Module hid not found. FATAL: Module hid not found. FATAL: Module mousedev not found. FATAL: Module mousedev not found. i'm pretty stuck now! oh yeah. i have the mouse plugged into motherboard usb socket. thankyou!
  3. Just what i was after - thanks
  4. to be honest - i just want to see my network in/out usage - nothing else.
  5. Hey all. I use adsl (device ppp0). Network monitor shows my network to be up - but when you look at the main network_monitor display - there is no tab to view ppp0. This means that i cannot monitor traffic. I have tried to look for any relevant commands under network_monitor --help, and draknet_monitor --help, but am no closer. Any ideas? Is there any other network monitor applications you would recommend? tia
  6. hmm - i'm kinda getting outta my depth - but for no kde perhaps you can edit /etc/inittab and set the default run level to 3 - at least you'll have a full system - but no gui this was solved by moving the kcmlaptoprc from root/.kde/share/config to /home/user/.kde/share/config
  7. thought it was the acpi causing problems? make sure you remove acpi=ht (if you have it)
  8. hey... trying to remember this, but.. use your install dvd and choose repair (i think) this gets you to a repair gui screen. There is an option that gets you into the command line. Once this is done - look through the file system (go through /mnt directory - and you should see your hda or hdb - whatever you installed linux to. from there you can vi /etc/lilo.conf and make you changes - for example: image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux" root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="noapic resume=/dev/hdb5 splash=silent" vga=788 read-only make changes, save, go back to repair-gui and reboot - i think... - (not been using linux too long - but this kinda makes sense.)
  9. hey dude... first check what kernel you are running. type uname-r you need to install the kernel-source for that kernel. if you have a your urpmi setup type (as root) urpmi kernel-source if it gives you a choice of kernel source, choose the one that is correct for your kernel. then go through the steps to run your nvdia installer.
  10. shall check all, and try a LOT more patience! thanks - i'll let you know <edit> one of the rpm sites was playing up.. reconfigured them all - all ok - thanks for the help. </edit>
  11. Hi all, After kde3.4 update (thanks Thac!) unable to perform urpmi --wget --auto-select --no-verify-rpm tried just urpmi --auto-select but all that happens is terminal sits there and does ...nothing!! tried to remove rpm database with rm -rf /var/lib/rpm/__db* and then rebuild it - but still no joy... got the following media added: [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.jpackage_www.mirrorservice.org_i586_2005LimitedEdition.cz] [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.updates_ftp.surfnet.nl_i586_2005LimitedEdition.cz] [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.plf-free.cz] [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.plf-nonfree.cz] [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.updates.cz] [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.main.cz] [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.contrib.cz] [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.jpackage.cz] [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.thac.cz] [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.contrib_ftp.nluug.nl_i586_2005LimitedEdition.cz] [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.distrib_ftp.nluug.nl_i586_2005LimitedEdition.cz] but after kde3.4 update (thanks Thac!) unable to perform urpmi --wget --auto-select --no-verify-rpm tried just urpmi --auto-select but all that happens is terminall sits there and does ...nothing!! tried to remove rpm database with rm -rf /var/lib/rpm/__db* and then rebuild it - but still no joy... any ideas?? 12. I aint complaining baby!!! - You guys always help when you can (and one day - i may be able to return the favour!!)
  13. Hey all. Just installed LE2005 (from 10.2 rc2) and all seemed ok. When machine boots it occasionally goes straight to black screen and login - but no x! So - i login as root, init3 then init 5 and all is ok. reboot - all fine for a few reboots, then it happens again!! i have attached the output of var/log/messages for 1 boot. thanks! <edit> normally when someone posts, you get a reply quite quickly. I guess this was a problem many haven't seen before!! So - i bit the bullet - reinstalled mandrake - and all ok!. Thanks to all those who looked in anyhow!! </edit> mess.txt
  14. aha - thankyou!!! thought i was going blind/stupid/developing_slight_paranoia* ;)
  15. Hi all, I want to setup my rpms, but cannot find relevant ones on mandrake club. also (out of interest what other rpms do you add to your system apart from the official ones?) tia
  16. i'm no expert - in fact pretty new here, but. at the lilo screen boot into fail safe mode this should result in a terminal screen. log in as root cd /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ then vi ifcfg-eth0 *if indeed it is called eth0 change the option to the following - if it doesn't exist enter it ONBOOT=no save and exit try that - if it hangs at hardware detection etc it may be worth trying to enable ACPI and force no APIC though i am not too sure how you do that from the failsafe terminal (assuming you cannot enter the gui.
  17. Hello all, I'm want to update my system to the 10.2 final release (when it is released) and so thought i might do a little preperation in adavnce. Reason for update... well my machine tends to lock up at "loading usb printer" during boot, and from my understanding, usb control is from the kernel - and is a "work in progress" besides, i paid for club membership - i may as well use it!! so - my current system is 10.1 all thac'd up (thankyou Thac!) with lovely kde 3.4 etc. and (once it boots) runs sweet as a nut. In fact - so good Mrs djc_slip will soon be using it. So - 1/ do i upgrade or fresh install (i have always been a believer that a fresh install is better than an upgrade for obvious compatibility issues.) 2/ what folders do i back up. 3/ will kde 3.4 still be availlable if i only do an upgrade (or should i install and wait for god like chap Thac to release the rpm's) And - of course - what folders should i be backing up as a matter of routine in case my system ever falls over? I'm sorry if this has been asked before - i have searched low and high for some sort of definitive answer and never quite found one.
  18. Hey all. Hope this post finds you well - and more importantly - i hope i posted in the right place! Just wanted to say THANKYOU to all at MandrakeUsers.org. Recently installed Mandrake 10.1 official - (3 weeks ago). I drove myself mad when my nvidia card disappeared from the system, i still get errors on boot - and can't play dvds yet - my font's are kinda setup but occasionally fuzzy - but - you know what - i don't care! i'll fix it eventually Overall i have enjoyed the experience. It's really been worth it. I can login, play, tweak, and more importantly - FIX my machine without having to do a complete reinstallation. WOOHOO!! I guess thats the reason i decided to start using linux. To do anything in windows required looking for a program someone else had written - buy it (yeah right) and then hope it did what i wanted... well no more - i have seen the light! Anyhow - the reason i'm posting is to say , without the knowledge that i have gained from reading through this site, i would have given up.... I still have a long way to go - loads of questions to ask - but they are for another post... Thanks Again...
