That would depend on if there is anything else connected either of those computers. If one is connected to the internet and there is no firewall in place between your internet connection and your little network, then it could pose a problem. However, if the two computers are only connected to each other and nothing else, then no security threat should exist.

The desktop (fw) is connected to the internet, but shorewall is blocking access from net to fw everything I don't want through. iptables is masquerading my laptop (masq). Here's an example of what I mean:

 

ACTION      SRC   DEST   PROTO    DEST PORT    SRC PORT
ACCEPT      net    fw     tcp         80          -
ACCEPT    masq     fw     tcp         -           -
ACCEPT    masq     fw     udp         -           -
