Guest chris26
Hi all, I have been trying for over a week to get the Nvidia-installer to actually work on my mandrake 9.1. I had to revert to the "nv" driver just to get into X. I followed the directions as per the README file, but I just kept getting kernel module errors. Does anyone have a possible solution? bvc
I've NEVER had a prob :? . what's yours? (logs, config files [XF86Config-4, modules.conf], errors etc...) have you installed the kernel-source and; sh NVIDIAxxxxxx.run -ane? Does the kernel-source match the current running kernel? What card/manufacturer?

Qchem
If you're not sure if the kernel source is installed it probably isn't, check with rpm -qa | grep -i kernel and look for something like kernel-source. If it isn't installed, install it and watch your problems magically disappear!
Gowator
First do this uname -r This will tell you which version of kernel you are running Now you probably want to dinstall any of the installer that tried to install (The command is in the help) Now you want to edit your XF86config and remove the nvidia and replace with nv so you can boot into linux and X) Now check the kernel sources are installed. THESE need to be called EXACTLY the same as the output of uname -r Now do what Qchem suggests.... i.e. rpm -qa | grep -i kernel The source needs to be EXACTLY the SAME as the output of uname -r Now you probably wanna install the kernel. You can either urpmi kernel-source-<your kernel version> or select it from the MCC Add software. perhaps the latter allows a bit of checking.... Now you have the kernel source for your running kernel. You need to find out what your display manager is.... (the thing you login to graphically) in a console type ps -ef | grep dm You are looking for one of gdm, kdm, xdm or mdkdm As root : type /etc/init.d/<yourdm> stop This will stop the login service Now CTRL+ALT+BKSPACE or logout should dump you at a login shell. login as root as root updatedb (this will get your indexing up to date) then type locate nvidia (you shouldn't get a nvidia.o or nvidia.o.gz but you might if you do then save this output as) locate nvidia >nvid-preinstall (i,e you just created a file with the output of the locate if everything goes wrong we'll use this later) Now run the installer after it has finished type updatedb; locate nvidia (wait) You should see the files it has created. They should be in a directory called /lib/modules/<'uname -r'>/...... If they aren't then the rest won't work. Better to post back..... Now you need to get X working.... the drak wizard should work.... presently your file is screwed up so let MCC fix it. If you type drakconfig at the prompt it brings up a text based version. Choose the X setup and get a working config. (using the old nv driver) If you aren't starting with it working then you won't know which part is wrong. If they are (and I think they will be) then you can exit root with CTRL+D (or exit) login as yourself then type startx You are still using the nv driver open a root console cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.old.backup Now use an editor to edit the file. You can open two windows and have the readme in the other window as you follow it. Once its OK then you save it and exit X with logout or CTRL+ALT+BKSPC then restart with startx (Now you should be using the new driver) If this works then great!!!:D If not then post back!!! If you need to use X then you can (as root) cp /etc/XF86Config-4 /etc/XF86Config-4.nvidia cp /etc/XF86Config-4.old.backup /etc/XF86Config-4 If everything works your login manger will restart next time you reboot. Otherwise you can resart it from a root console as /etc/inid.d/<yourdm> start (IF it isn't working don't bother doing this)
Qchem
You could always switch to run level 3 using /sbin/telinit 3 as opposed to switching off the display manager and killing the x session.
Guest chris26
Ok guys, still not working, Here is what I did: uname -r shows: 2.4.21-0.13mdkenterprise So, then I installed the 2.4.21.0.13 sources, and when I type rpm -qa | grep -i kernel: NVIDIA_kernel-2.4.21.0.13mdk-4321-3mdk kernel-smp-2.4.21.0.13mdk-1-1mdk kernel-doc-2.4.21-0.25mdk NVIDIA_kernel-enterprise-2.4.21.0.13mdk-4321-3mdk kernel-multimedia-smp-2.4.21.0.16mdk-1-1mdk kernel-enterprise-2.4.21.0.13mdk-1-1mdk kernel-multimedia-2.4.21.0.16mdk-1-1mdk kernel-source-2.4.21-0.13mdk kernel-2.4.21.0.13mdk-1-1mdk NVIDIA_kernel-smp-2.4.21.0.13mdk-4321-3mdk To be safe, I uninstalled the driver, and reinstalled it using no options. To me, the NVIDIA kernel and the sources look the same, except for an extension on the Nvidia line. XF86Config-4 was setup exactly like in the earlier post. Now, right after I installed it, I was able to type init 5 and get into X no problem. I thought my problems were solved. However, just to make sure, I called a reboot and I received errors again. THis time it was a GLX error, but unfortunately I cannot post them here because I changed "nvidia" to "nv" and rebooted. That overwrote the log file. Ixthusdan
1) Deal only with the XF86Config-4 file, and not XF86Config 2) You are loading glx twice. Put a hash mark (#) infront of "glx". 3) In the XF85Config-4 file, change the driver to "nvidia", no capitals.
Guest chris26
Ok, I commented out the last Load "glx" line, I changed "nv" to "nvidia" I received these errors: NV: Could not get NV card info ( Invalid argument ) (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize NVIDIA kernel module! (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting *** (EE) NVIDIA(0): Screens found but none have usable configuration Fatal Server Error: No screens found I tried commenting out the first glx line, then neither of them, still got the same errors. THese are the errors I was originally faced with. Any ideas from here? Chris
Gowator
You don't have kernel headers Your running kernel is -enterprise However as bvc asked , your source doesn't match your running kernel becuase you are using enterprise. You don't have the enterprise source. In fact its the same source but the installer doesn't know that. Your easiest way to fix this is a bit of a hack. You probably don't wanna be using enterprise anyway BUT its the only Mandrake kernel to support >868MB RAM However its not optimised for speed. Lets fix one thing at a time though 1) reboot and choose the linux-2.4 .... option, not the default enterprise 2) do everytyhing youve been doing and it will create the modules but only in the right place for your non-enterprise kernel 3) COPY the two files into the same place but in -enterprise in /lib/modules Now reboot back to enterprise Now you might need to do a depmod -ae (im honestly not sure) Now go into X with the normal nv driver.... Check everything is still OK then copy the XF86Config-4 thats configured for nvidia NOT nv restart X Good luck
bvc
IF that works, and I don't think it will (have you done this sort of thing?), you will need to; depmod -ae The NVIDIA installer does depmod -aq ....but you're not using the NVIDIA installer, rt? Just prebuilt rpm's, rt? So the source isn't even looked at, just the running kernel. Nvidia can only run, and be installed for one kernel at a time. Yes it's a pain. Pick a kernel you'll run most often, and install with the NVIDIA-Installer. Try prebuilt first. If it doesn't work, then append -ane to the installer to build with the kernel-source. I thought kernel-enterprise had its own source, no? Use to  . I breifly looked at nvidia.com for enterprise instructions but didn't see any. Where is it?....they've got to have something. Guest chris26
Well thanks for your help, anyway everyone. It looks like its just not going to work. The combination of my Hardware, Mandrake 9.1 and Nvidia's drivers must not be completely compatible with each other. Im entertaining the idea of dropping Mandrake because I have had nothing but problems like these with it. Anyway, if I make any last minute attepts to fix it and it works, Ill be sure to post it. Thanks again, Chris
Guest jkcavenaugh
I'm speaking in pure ignorance, but which nvidia driver did you install? I recently had a very similar problem, and it all magically disappeared when I used the installer located in the downloads section above. NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run
Guest chris26
You know what, I dont remember off hand what driver I downloaded, but it definitely wsa not that one! The one I used came directly from Nvidia, and it was slightly different from the one you have posted. Im curious now, is the only on Nvidia's website not the most up-to-date one? Or are you using the standard Mandrake driver that doesnt allow for hardware acceleration?
bvc
If it's called this NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run it's the same one. It's also the one I was referring to when I said to install with the installer. Give it a whirl
