mystified
I'm sorry ral but I don't understand the question. Maybe I'm being a little dense but you're talking about a desktop/browser/office application and I don't see the connection. Could you please explain or maybe somebody else will know what you're referring to and provide you with an answer. Sorry! :?
DragonMage
Ouchie.. if you mean you want to input texts for language that uses non-Roman characters such as Japanese, Chinese, or Arabic.. well.. it's going to be really tough. There is no easy solutions for this if you want a ms windows like run NJWIN and plug away. For this, you really need to do your research using google and stuffs. Here are some links that I use when I was researching how to input Japanese texts in linux http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/jpninpt.html http://www.ugcs.caltech.edu/~diffusor/xim/ http://www.twics.com/~craig/writings/linux...ux-nihongo.html To tell you the truth.. it's very troublesome.. gnome2 is supposed to have doublebyte characters support built in.. but so far I haven't seen the implementation.. Anyway.. I hope those links help..
MoonChild
Just in case you might find this helpful... Install locale-xx of the desired language (ie locale-el is greek locale) Configure your keyboard in KDE to have additional layouts (of the desired language) Click on the language icon that will appear, or press Ctrl+Alt+K to switch languages. ral
I guess I was looking for something like MS Global IME's. Will try what you suggested Moonchild. I type in English, but about one in ofur of our clients uses Chinsese, Japanese or Korean.
zero0w
Depending on your locale language, see if the instruction from this page will help you: http://www.acmuller.net/linux/japanese_ime.html It works for Japanese but I found that it's working for Chinese as well. The downside is it requires root access and reboot to switch between languages, but it's 100% working and without any other need of tweaking or configure. Guest BooYah
and read the articles, but still can't quite get my computer to display or accept Japanese. When I try kinput2 -wnn I get an error message "cannot connect to jserver." I've searched the web and my distro CD's for jserver, but I'm not having any luck. I'm running Man 9. I used the software manager and installed everything it listed for wnn in file names and descriptions. I gathered that jserver is part of Wnn, but then why can't Wnn connect to jserver? Did I miss a configuration step somewhere? Any ideas? Thanks for posting those articles, by the way.
zero0w
See if jserver is turned on at boot. You can do it by Mandrake Control Center > System > Services Look for jserver from the list, turn it on at bootup if you need to.
Guest BooYah
That did it! I can now read and write Japanese texts in English programs! Thanks a lot guys! My computer hangs for a little bit when shutting down. It gets to "Shutting down jserver" and gets stuck for a few minutes. I'll try and figure this one out later. BooYah!
