i have been trying to get my speeedtouch usb working with mandrake 9.1 bamboo

i must have done every single tutorial on the web, the soundforge script

the one on this site, the howto every one leaves me with no connection

and back in windows, my secrets files are correct so is adsl in peers,

and i have mgmt.o.

one thing i am wondering is should both my modem lights be on even before i have started to install the drivers (ie:new install)

i am a newbie, is there something i am missing?

Thanks if anyone can help, but i have struggled for 2 months now

And am beginning to crack

i have included part of messages

Jun 23 17:46:51 localhost pppd[4149]: Using interface ppp0

Jun 23 17:46:51 localhost pppd[4149]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/9

Jun 23 17:46:51 localhost pppoa3[4332]: PPPoA3 version 1.1 started by root (uid 0)

Jun 23 17:46:51 localhost pppoa3[4332]: Control thread ready

Jun 23 17:46:51 localhost pppoa3[4337]: ppp(d) --> pppoa3 --> modem stream ready

Jun 23 17:46:51 localhost pppoa3[4338]: modem --> pppoa3 --> ppp(d) stream ready

Jun 23 17:46:51 localhost /etc/hotplug/net.agent: NET unregister event not supported

Jun 23 17:46:51 localhost /etc/hotplug/net.agent: assuming ppp0 is already up

Jun 23 17:47:22 localhost pppd[4149]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests

Jun 23 17:47:22 localhost pppd[4149]: Connection terminated.

:shock:

I'm not sure which Speedtouch you have. There's a new one that is different. The one I know is the one shaped like a stingray. Did you do this before trying pppd call adsl?:

modem_run -v -f /real/path/to/mgmt.o

You have to do that as root.

And then wait for it to finish doing its thing. It can sometimes take a few minutes before it returns a prompt to you and you'll see the modem's lights blinking.

its the stingray but mine is a blue/green and all it has on it is speedtouch usb...

should both the lights be on even before i install the driver, maybe i have a hardware problem?

If I remember correctly, then both lights should be on after you boot up, if the usb stuff is working correctly.

The light sequence starts after you have applied the "modem_run" command.

http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=2060 is the source of the info I used to get mine working (though since then I have changed to using a modem/router from solwise (SAR110), because it used to really annoy me having to wait for the speedtouch to disconnect then re-initialise when booting between OS's + every now and again, I would get a really strange about line 150 in the "speedtouch.sh" not working, and the only way I ever managed to cure that, was to re-install the software completely).

I seem to recall that the stuff in the thread that I have linked, it was accuracy in editing the 4 files, it has to be "spot on" or it doesn't let you connect (or it will tell you that you are connected but you can't access anything) - dependant on your system, you might need to edit pap secrets and chap secrets (I did both)

Hope this is of some help (though I would say ditch the speedtouch and get youself a modem router and network card - it should be recognised easily and the config is a million times more straightforward)

regards

Thanks in advance for the help, I have followed Steve Scrimpshire tutorial to the letter, but since I am a total newbie I cannot run the modem_run command it just says its not known (I forgot what it actually returned).

Is there anything I need to be doing to run this command?

I have a terrible feeling I am missing something simple, but at least I am learning as I go along... :x

First

Sorry, I have to agree. USB isn't really meant for networking, hatever way you look at it :-)

Hi John, am I to take it you did follow that advice and buy one after all !!

Anyway, from any terminal, eterm, aterm, xterm

you can do a

locate mgmt.o

If it doesn't find it try a

updatedb [you need to be root to do this]

then

locate mgmt.o

If it finds it then do what Steve Scrimpshire said:

modem_run -v -f /real/path/to/mgmt.o

replace the real/path/to with your path that locATE FINDS !!

If you don't know how to change to root or open a teminal just ask!!!

i also noticed that both the modem lights light up as soon as mandrake starts, including when the install begins..
