Hello all, so I am pretty new to Linux in general. I have used it at school(RedHat), and wanted to get more familiar with it. I have looked on the internet for a few days now, and I cannot seem to get my wireless card working. Apparently it has been a pretty big problem because I have found huge quantities of pages on how to fix this problem, however, a lot of the pages are old, and have a lot of dead links.

I am trying to run Mandriva 2008 which i just downloaded off of the Mandriva Website. My wireless card is an Intel PRO 2200BG. I tried getting the drivers and the firmware off the Intel website, but I cannot get the ieee80211 part to install. It says Make: command not found. So basically I dont know what else to do. If someone could help me out with this, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Welcome to MUB!

2 things:

1) Make sure you are root when working an installation. For example, while one may be able to "make' as a user, "make install" can only be performed by root.

2) You should install your kernel source. ("urpmi kernel-source" in a shell.) If make is not actually installed, this will install all the stuff needed for compiling.

What Mandriva are you using? I'm asking that because my laptop at work (IBM T-42) has the same wireless card and sometimes I run it from the Live CD (Mandriva One). I've never had any problem with the network. So if you didn't install from the live CD, you may want to try and find it in the repositories, it can save you a lot of headache in the installation. The only problem is that I don't know the name of the package you are looking for, maybe someone else would know.

You shouldn't have to install anything (drivers), to make your Intel 2200 card work. did you try to set it up with the: Configure your computer > Network & internet > Set up a new network interface?

Refrain from compiling stuff on your own whenever it's possible. In most cases you can install and use preconfigured packages using "urpmi" or a graphical frontend. If there's no other means left, compiling on your own can be helpful - do an "urpmi make" as root to install GNU make. In order to gain a minimal compiling environment, you'd also have to "urpmi gcc" or something similar. You'll probably need that for building a 3D hardware accelerated driver component for your machine. But the less you compile, the fewer headache you will cause for yourself. ;-)

so after two weeks, i am just about ready to give up. i have spent countless hours on the web to no avail. I cant get my wireless to any extent. im pretty much stumped. it finds the card, but no network. sometimes it says it is unable to find interface using ipw2200 driver, it gives error in the startup. and as ironic as it may seem. in the PerfectDesktop tutorial on howtoforge.org, the same exact card is being used. i have no idea why mine will not work. again.. Toshiba Satellite a105-s2716 with intel pro 2200bg wireless card. Thanks for any help.
