Hi again,

after the little trouble I had with Linux 2005 I downloaded Linux 2006 i586.

I installed all the 3 cd and didn't get any error message!!

Then I pressed on reeboot (after I took out the cd) and everything starts normal.

Linux seems to Boot and I also do not get an error message when I look at the verose mode.

After I passed this stage I see the first screen (with the mouse pointer) and then the Screen starts flashing!!!

It continous flashing, the monitor on and off in a few seconds intervall without booting any further...

When I shut down the system manualy end then I press esc I see that error message:

Stopping Shoreshell: ipt.owners:pid, sid and command matching on STM is broken

Any Help out there?

What videocard you have?

A solution could be trying to reconfigure the xserver. You can try 2 things:

1. when the screen starts flashing press alt+ctrl+backspace as many times as needed to get either a graphical login, or a terminal login. Or:

2. When the bootloader appears, press esc and then type in

linux 3

This will bring you a terminal login. Login as root, and run mcc ( or xfdrake ) to configure X from console.

I don't think it's shorewall the cause of your problem, BTW- it may be malfunctioning, but not killing X.

I tried this, didn't work yet. I went to the terminal, typed mcc and then went to graphic.

My card is VIA/S36 Unichrome Pro IGR

When I was running Linux 2005 I didn't have a problem with it.

I noticed something else:

On start up after I press escape I see a lot of OK including on message with no OK saying:

'press Y to force file system intregity check'

What should I do next?

First, you are crashing your computer rather than shutting it down. When the x environment cannot find a display (means it is misconfigured) then just wait fro a few minutes and eventually the system will disable the x environment for the session. Then, you can log in at a command line and type "shutdown" instead of just turning it off.

Once you get to the commandline and have logged in, type "su" and the root password. Then, type "mc" You will be presented with a file manager that also provides editing abilities. Navigation is explained right in front of you. Navigate to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, hit F4 and go down to the section that says "driver" (it is toward the end of the file) See if this reads "vga". If it does not, change it to read "vga" hit F2, F10, F10, and then reboot. (Type "reboot" at the commandline.

Log in as root

root (enter)

password (enter)

Now launch

XFdrake

and try to set up your graphics and monitor correctly. Once this is done, log out from the root account (exit) and log in as normal user. Then test if it works with starting the X environment with

startx

If it doesn't work yet, do as Ixthusdan said.

Hi,

Did what you said and played around with XFdrake...

One of the messages I get is:

(EE) Error: VGA(0): Given depht (16) is not supported by this driver

(EE) Screen found, but none have a usuable configuration.

Fatal Screen Error

No Screens Found.

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on x server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining

What does all that means?

Oh oh... it means that your graphics card is probably not fully supported and cannot be run in 16 bit mode and: You monitor is not recognized at all. Which Model/Vendor is the monitor? Do you have some documentation for it? It would help in setting up some values for the monitor manually that might work with it. I guess that some manual hacking is necessary here (= changing stuff in /etc/X11/xorg.conf).

No, you don't have to. Vesa will give you the basics, but you won't get OpenGL/3D support without using your specific drivers.

If this isn't a problem, continue with the vesa ones.
