shimshon
Hi, After I made all the upgrades with MCC open office & KDE Software doesn't start anymore? Is it possible to downgrade & what else could I do (are there any analyse programms I could use? Thanks [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
arctic
Did you upgrade your distribution or update the packages? These are two different things. When you log in as root, open Konqueror, activate "show hidden files" and move to your /home folder. rename the hidden .kde, .qt and .openoffice folders to e.g. .kdebackup etc. Now log in again as a normal user and check if the problem still exists. shimshon
Sorry, I am quite a beginner. Where do I find Konqueror? and how do I log in as root?
arctic
When you get to the login screen, type root hit enter and provide the root password in a next step and hit enter again. Konqueror is the KDE file manager (And KDE is the desktop that you are most probably using on your installation). If you click on the "home/my files" icon in the menu, Konqueror will be started. You could do all that from a command-line, too, but for now, let's do it the "easy" way = the way you are probably more familiar with. If things are unclear for you, don't be shy and ask us. We will gladly help you. :)
shimshon
Hi again, I did what you suggested. I changed the KDE & the QT Folders to KDEbackup etc... I don't have any openoffice foder though. An other thing I saw is that when I click on logout, I used to get 3 options: restart, logout & shutdown. Now I only get the option logout?! Anyway I logged in again as a normal user after I made those changes but OO & K programms still don't start? Thanks I noticed something else, I tried to start Konqueror Browser and I get the following messenges: There was an error loading the module About-Page for Konqueror. The diagnostics is: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `CXXABI_1.3.1' not found (required by /usr/lib/libkhtml.so.4)
arctic
What do you get if you type in a terminal as root (click on the black monitor window, type "root", hit enter and submit the root password (will be invisible this time)): rpm -qa |grep libstdc++ ?
shimshon
I get this: libstdc++6-3.4.3-7mdk libstdc++6-devel-3.4.3-7mdk
arctic
Then all required libraries should be there. Please run from a terminal again as root updatedb If you still can't run your account decently, then please set up a new account so we can find out if this is a user-specific problem or if it is a system-wide problem. Report back if a new account shows the same problems or if everything works okay there.
shimshon
Did what you said but also if I set up an other user it doesn't work. Seems to be system wide...
arctic
Okay, then please give us exact information on the following questions. 1. What version of Mandriva are you using? Please post the output of "uname -a" from a terminal. 2. Have you set up easyurpmi software mirrors and updated from there or did you use another method? 3. Have you used some extra mirrors for upgrading KDE like SoS or MDE? 4. Did you install the Mandriva rpms for OpenOffice or the ones from the OpenOffice mirrors? 5. When you updated your packages, were there any error messages displayed? 6. Please add the contents of the following file here (attach it as a .txt file) /var/log/messages It is important that you answer these question as detailed as possible. I guess that one of these questions might reveal to us what caused your problem, thus could be a good starting point for fixing your problem. :)
shimshon
1. Linux bzq-84-108-105-19.cablep.bezeqint.net 2.6.11-6mdksmp #1 SMP Tue Mar 22 15:40:42 CET 2005 i686 Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.00GHz unknown GNU/Linux 2. I just updated Firefox with urpmi - the rest I updated with MMC 3. I used MMC 4. I am not shure but I think from the mirrors 5. No 6. Can't find any var/log/messages folder?
Gowator
Sometimes doing a major upgrade freom the GUI can cause this because files are not overwritten. Its a bit like the old windows please reboot now thing but happens very infrequently... It can also happen by chance if you don't update urpmi before upgrading because some mirrors may have one version opf a file and another a newer. One way to do this is from the CLI with X stopped... The easiest way to do this is open a root terminal in X and then /etc/init.d/kdm stop (or whatever dm is being used might be mkddm) Then update urpmi with urpmi.update -a then reinstall the openoffice and KDE (we will specifiy noclean so the packages are not automatically deleted, just in case) urpmi --noclean <KDE> urpmi --noclean <openoffice.org> (first find the actual package names you upgraded using the GUI browse installed progs)
arctic
/var/log/messages is not a folder but the path to the "messages" file. /var/log/ is the folder (first go to /var, then go to /log = /var/log) in which you will find a file called "messages". Please post it, if Gowators recommendations don't help.

scarecrow
It seems you borked your system completely. You are running 2005LE (and a non-updated kernel), and tried to update using 2006.0 repositories. Never do that again.
