Invisible Modem Problem

I hope this is the right place for this.

I am running an

Athlon 700MHz

512 Megs RAM

plenty of HDD space

I just installed the Mandrake 10.1 Download,

and it installed beautifully, with one hick-up.

My ISA: U.S. Robotics 56k internal PNP Fax/Modem was not set up.

I looked and the documentation said that HardDrake did not scan the ISA bus.

How can I get my modem working in Linux?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated as I am new to Linux.

Thanks in advance.

H

I bought the modem used so I don't have the

Product ID, Model Number, or Serial number

Here is what the modem will tell me about itself:

U.S. Robotics Sportster 56000 Fax V4.2.21

Product Type US/Canada Internal

Options V32bis, V34+, x2

Fax Options Class 1/Class 2.0

Line Options Caller ID, Distinctive Ring

Clock Frequency 92.0Mhz

Eprom 256k

Ram 64k

Eprom Date 3/21/97

DSP Date 3/21/97

Eprom Rev. 4.2.21

DSP Rev. 10.2.21

In my bios the setting for PNP OS is set to Off

The screen where it lists all the hardware in the system (before the OS boots)

like drives, modem, graphics, processor, ram, etc.

does show the modem.

The modem works in Windoze, and it worked in Mandrake 8.0 as well.

Since it is in the bios, you should be able to go into the dialer setup and find the port it is on. What specifically are you doing to set it up?

Since it is in the bios, you should be able to go into the dialer setup and find the port it is on. What specifically are you doing to set it up?

boot linux

1)

In KPPP:

under Device Tab

Modem Device is set to /dev/modem

Under the Modem Tab

When I hit the querry modem button

it responds with modem busy then modem querry timmed out

I get the same querry result with the device set to /dev/ttyS1

2)

I open the mandrake control center

select Hardware

the modem is not listed there

select Network & Internet

then select New Connection icon

in Connection type I select Modem Connection

in Select modem to configure there is only Modem - Manual choice

in Choose serial port I select ttyS1/COM2

(the same com port windows says it is on)

in Select your provider I choose Unlisted - edit manually as there are no choices for the USA listed.

I plug in my ISP info phone etc...

IP parameters automatic

DNS parameters automatic

Gateway automatic

start connection at boot No

do you want to try now - yes

I get the message: Your system doesn't seem to be connected to the internet, try to reconfigure your connection.

--

I am doing something wrong, but I don't have the faintest clue what it might be.

If I could just tell the system that there is a modem in the computer, I could fix the rest of it, I think. :wall:

Well, I am bothered that the modem is listed in the bios but not in harddrake. (Or whatever we call it now!) I am a little rusty on modems since I have not configured one in several years, but the process should not have changed much.

An isa modem should be an actual hardware device, which means Mandriva should see it.

Try a "modprob isapnp" at the command line as root and see if that helps. (guessing)

I tried the modprob isapnp

the system said isapnp not found

so I went to the package manager and installed isapnp from the cd

rebooted, and had the same results as previously.

What do I need to change or try now?

Can anyone recomend an online how-to or manual that might shed some light

on the solution to my problem?

I really appreciate all the help, Thank You.

I would think, that it should not be this difficult to get a modem up and running.

And to the person that suggested I buy a PCI modem...why?

Modems are almost obsolete; since the advent of affordable

broadband, which I don't currently have the funds for and I

already have a network card and a hub.

I came back to Mandrake after trying Debian because the people

on the user board here treated me with respect even though I am

a noobie, thank you all once again.

I got that from a sight when I googled "isa modems in linux".

ISA devices were hardware, I believe. I am concerned that perhaps something is wrong with the modem. This same sight indicated that the kernel needed to be compiled with the isapnp as a module. It may be that you need to compile a kernel for your box, specifically for isa devices. The stock kernels may not be compiled for isa.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the modem.

I logged in as root this evening and ran "pnpdump", and it worked.

then I ran "isapnp -h" and it worked.

You are probably right about needing to recompile the kernel.

So thank you for all the help, as it seems I need to head over to another forum so I am not off topic. :)

I am new to Linux.

I need ISA functionality in my Mandrake 10.1 installation.

Specifically to get my modem up and running.

I want it to work.

I have installed isapnptools from the cd rom.

And it alone hasn't fixed the problem. (remember I'm from the land of M$)

What more do I need to do?

I ran pnpdmp, so I know it worked. But am hesitant to take

the next step running "isapnp"- as I am not entirely sure of

what I am doing, or what/how I should edit any files.

Someone said something about recompiling my kernel...

If that is what I need to do, can someone help?

I feel like I need some "adult supervision" for the project,

as I could nuke the whole thing if I mess up.

If I could do this more easily through a reinstall, would

I need to do anything unusual?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

With isa functionality you mean you want to get your modem to work? Mandriva supports most hardware (and I think an isa modem from years ago will be no problem) out of the box. I think you can better look for a configuration HOWTO if the Mandrake Control Center doesn't work.

To get information about your modem open a console and type: lspci -v

To get information about the module (=driver in windows) open a console, log in as root and type: lsmod (that will show you a list of all the modules loaded (installed). With the information from lspci -v you can find the module needed for your modem and then you can check if it's mentionen in the lsmod output. If it is it means you can use the modem. You just need to configure it. If not then you go look for a driver with the information from lspci -v)

Good luck.

Exactly, I want the modem to work, but it doesn't yet.

The modem does not appear in the Mandrake Control Center (HardDrake).

Wouldn't "lspci -v" be for pci boards? while my modem is an isa board...

There was no sign of the modem until, as suggested, I installed isapnptools,

ran the "pnpdump" program, then ran out of guts/knowledge and posted here.

But I'll give it a try - I hate rebooting so darn much.

Thanks.

:: Update ::

I gave it a try, and as I suspected this command did give me the information,

but only on the PCI cards - which I am not having any trouble with.
