1. I ran the dump out to the config file, and it matched the windows data. I rebooted, and it hasn't appeared to help; therefore I assume there is more to do. What do I do now? do I have to :deal: to make this thing work? <lol>
2. 1) What do I need to do to get isapnp functioning correctly? 2) What do I need to do to have isapnp autoload at boot? 3) do I want to duplicate the same set of IRQ & base I/O address as is in my windows configuration Thanks.
3. Exactly, I want the modem to work, but it doesn't yet. The modem does not appear in the Mandrake Control Center (HardDrake). Wouldn't "lspci -v" be for pci boards? while my modem is an isa board... There was no sign of the modem until, as suggested, I installed isapnptools, ran the "pnpdump" program, then ran out of guts/knowledge and posted here. But I'll give it a try - I hate rebooting so darn much. Thanks. :: Update :: I gave it a try, and as I suspected this command did give me the information, but only on the PCI cards - which I am not having any trouble with.
4. I have a DEB package I want to install on my Mandrake 10.1 computer. Is there any way to do this? I also have the contents of the DEB file. Or do I have to wait for them to come out with a source or RPM version? (something I do not think will ever happen.) -Henry
5. I am new to Linux. I need ISA functionality in my Mandrake 10.1 installation. Specifically to get my modem up and running. I want it to work. I have installed isapnptools from the cd rom. And it alone hasn't fixed the problem. (remember I'm from the land of M$) What more do I need to do? I ran pnpdmp, so I know it worked. But am hesitant to take the next step running "isapnp"- as I am not entirely sure of what I am doing, or what/how I should edit any files. Someone said something about recompiling my kernel... If that is what I need to do, can someone help? I feel like I need some "adult supervision" for the project, as I could nuke the whole thing if I mess up. If I could do this more easily through a reinstall, would I need to do anything unusual? Thank you for any help you can give me. -Henry - pnpdump results - # $Id: pnpdump_main.c,v 1.27 2001/04/30 21:54:53 fox Exp $ # Release isapnptools-1.26 # # This is free software, see the sources for details. # This software has NO WARRANTY, use at your OWN RISK # # For details of the output file format, see isapnp.conf(5) # # For latest information and FAQ on isapnp and pnpdump see: # http://www.roestock.demon.co.uk/isapnptools/ # # Compiler flags: -DREALTIME -DHAVE_PROC -DENABLE_PCI -DHAVE_SCHED_SETSCHEDULER -DHAVE_NANOSLEEP -DWANT_TO_VALIDATE # # Trying port address 0273 # Board 1 has serial identifier 7d 46 46 46 46 50 20 72 56 # (DEBUG) (READPORT 0x0273) (ISOLATE PRESERVE) (IDENTIFY *) (VERBOSITY 2) (CONFLICT (IO FATAL)(IRQ FATAL)(DMA FATAL)(MEM FATAL)) # or WARNING # Card 1: (serial identifier 7d 46 46 46 46 50 20 72 56) # Vendor Id USR2050, Serial Number 1179010630, checksum 0x7D. # Version 1.0, Vendor version 0.0 # ANSI string -->U.S.Robotics Inc. 6. I don't think there is anything wrong with the modem. I logged in as root this evening and ran "pnpdump", and it worked. then I ran "isapnp -h" and it worked. You are probably right about needing to recompile the kernel. So thank you for all the help, as it seems I need to head over to another forum so I am not off topic. :)
7. I tried the modprob isapnp the system said isapnp not found so I went to the package manager and installed isapnp from the cd rebooted, and had the same results as previously. What do I need to change or try now? Can anyone recomend an online how-to or manual that might shed some light on the solution to my problem? I really appreciate all the help, Thank You. I would think, that it should not be this difficult to get a modem up and running. And to the person that suggested I buy a PCI modem...why? Modems are almost obsolete; since the advent of affordable broadband, which I don't currently have the funds for and I already have a network card and a hub. I came back to Mandrake after trying Debian because the people on the user board here treated me with respect even though I am a noobie, thank you all once again.
8. boot linux 1) In KPPP: under Device Tab Modem Device is set to /dev/modem Under the Modem Tab When I hit the querry modem button it responds with modem busy then modem querry timmed out I get the same querry result with the device set to /dev/ttyS1 2) I open the mandrake control center select Hardware the modem is not listed there select Network & Internet then select New Connection icon in Connection type I select Modem Connection in Select modem to configure there is only Modem - Manual choice in Choose serial port I select ttyS1/COM2 (the same com port windows says it is on) in Select your provider I choose Unlisted - edit manually as there are no choices for the USA listed. I plug in my ISP info phone etc... IP parameters automatic DNS parameters automatic Gateway automatic start connection at boot No do you want to try now - yes I get the message: Your system doesn't seem to be connected to the internet, try to reconfigure your connection. -- I am doing something wrong, but I don't have the faintest clue what it might be. If I could just tell the system that there is a modem in the computer, I could fix the rest of it, I think.
9. I bought the modem used so I don't have the Product ID, Model Number, or Serial number Here is what the modem will tell me about itself: U.S. Robotics Sportster 56000 Fax V4.2.21 Product Type US/Canada Internal Options V32bis, V34+, x2 Fax Options Class 1/Class 2.0 Line Options Caller ID, Distinctive Ring Clock Frequency 92.0Mhz Eprom 256k Ram 64k Eprom Date 3/21/97 DSP Date 3/21/97 Eprom Rev. 4.2.21 DSP Rev. 10.2.21 In my bios the setting for PNP OS is set to Off The screen where it lists all the hardware in the system (before the OS boots) like drives, modem, graphics, processor, ram, etc. does show the modem. The modem works in Windoze, and it worked in Mandrake 8.0 as well. -H
10. I hope this is the right place for this. I am running an Athlon 700MHz 512 Megs RAM plenty of HDD space I just installed the Mandrake 10.1 Download, and it installed beautifully, with one hick-up. My ISA: U.S. Robotics 56k internal PNP Fax/Modem was not set up. I looked and the documentation said that HardDrake did not scan the ISA bus. How can I get my modem working in Linux? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated as I am new to Linux. Thanks in advance. H
11. I know 10.0 is out, I've thought about it too, but I'm running a 56k dialup and downloading the ISO's would take me untill 11.0 were out to download. True as that may be for most ISP's it is not true for Netzero. I tried to use kppp to log on to Netzero, it was a no-go. Then I found the deb file on their web site and it mostly works. Thanks for the welcome.
12. I am running MDK 8.0 on a more than adequate system. I installed the netzero.deb file so I could dial up using netzero. I manually uncompressed the .deb file out using Alien then moved things where they wanted to be. The windows created are outsized for the graphics level I use. Although it does get me online, the dialer program does not function entirely corectly. This error crops up when I use it to log on. Any Help you might give me would be greatly appreciated. my xsession errors file loged this error: WARNING: Can't get realtime priority (try running as root)!
