finlay
Has anyone used any of the following budget USB scanners with Mandrake 9.0? Mustek 1220 USB Plus Canon Canoscan 646u Canon Canoscan LiDE 20 I have failed to get my Umax parallel scanner to work and I'll buy one of the above if anyone can assure me that it works! However, even at the low prices of these scanners I'm not willing just to take a gamble. Please let me know if you have good reason to believe any of them works. Guest anon
Might be risky, none of them are listed in supported hardware : http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/hardware.php3
chalex20
http://www.mostang.com/sane - look for "Supported devices". If your devices are listed there as supported - go for it.
Steve Scrimpshire
I have Mandrake 8.1 and my Mustek 1200 UB (USB scanner) works, but with a little tweaking. I don't see why it wouldn't work with 9.0 (I bought it at Wal-Mart for less than $100, if I remember correctly).
finlay
My Umax 1220 worked fine under older releases of Mandrake in spite of not being in the supported list. So the support list isn't absolute. And upgrading to the latest version of the OS isn't foolproof either - quite the opposite! Thanks for the replies. Still dodgy about buying new. I'll try the updates first. Many thanks for your help. Finlay
Pzatch
Have you tried updating SANE? Mandrake might not be on the latest version anymore.
finlay
I'm afraid I have tried updating SANE snd tweaking dll.conf and umax_pp.conf - all to no avail :( I'm told there is a patch for parallel scanners in the cooker. So maybe I'll just wait... In the meantime I'm interested to hear about the Mustek (Now selling at Safeway in Britain for £35 - $53, Steve Scrimpshire!) It can't be any good at that price, can it? Finlay
finlay
How about Acer 4600 USB? Finlay
Steve Scrimpshire
I'm no graphic artist, so I couldn't give you technical comparisons, but it scans fine on mine. The pics may come out a little dark, but nothing a little brightness/contrast can't fix. (I almost forgot I could give you examples...) All these pics were scanned with it: http://66.139.79.197/~omarsere/Images/Steve.jpg - Original is meant to be very dark. http://66.139.79.197/~omarsere/Images/Guardian.gif - On black paper, very dark (pastels) http://66.139.79.197/~omarsere/Images/macaw.gif - W/C marker pointillism http://66.139.79.197/~omarsere/Images/pride.gif - Dk blue paper (pastels) All pics © 1996,1999,2000 - Steven B. Pzatch
My USB Mustek 1200 scans so well I had to increase my temp file size to over 120 mb. It scans much better than it ever did in windows. I can actualy scan my own fingerprints but it takes forever. Try using the 1200 drivers in Xsane and sane. They might work. The scanner is so cheap how could you go wrong?
finlay
Many thanks for your replies. The Mustek sounds like a way to go. I like the pics! Could you please tell me which version of Mandrake you're running, Pzatch? Finlay
Guest Mandrake_Mouse
Been running the Mustek 1200 UB on my machine with 9.0 for a couple of months now. Scans lots cleaner than it did with native Windoze drivers. Didn't have to tweak a thing. USB recognized right out of the box, and had XSane running within minutes. finlay
Well, i went out and bought the Mustek. BUT... Harddrake detects it as a Trust Flatscan USB 19200 on /dev/usb/scanner0. First, there is no such file under /dev/usb/ The only entry I have there is lp0. Secondly, since the model it recognizes isn't in the database, I've tried configuring it as Trust Compact Scan USB 19200, Mustek ScanExpress 1200 UB, Mustek ScanExpress 12090 USB, 1200CU Plus. None of these work. Of course if I don't have /dev/usb/scanner0 none of them will. Does any one have any ideas? Finlay
Steve Scrimpshire
Do you get any output when you run sane-find-scanner?
Pzatch
I'm running Mandrake 9.0 and the scanner was hooked up when i origionaly loaded mandrake. Since then i updated sane and Xsane. Don't know if the update did much since the scanner worked right off the start. It even gave me the desktop icon in KDE.
