  1. Many thanks. I changed to mic 2 using alsamixer but no joy. Mic still doesn't work. No options work. If I killall artsd I get no sound in skype at all. so I guess it's off to find out how to do dmix....
  2. How do you do that? - uninstall arts?
  3. I can't see any way of changing the mic in kmix. How do you do that? I just see a mic - no 1, no 2.
  4. Thanks both. I have checked full duplex in KDE and max priority. If I run artsdsp -m skype as user I can hear echo123 (on speakers) but no mic input. If I run artsdsp skype as root I get /dev/dsp-1: Device or resource busy. In gnome, esddsp skype does nothing. My sound system works pretty well otherwise. Oh well, I guess I'll have to carry out all the instructions in the Skype for Linux FAQ. Seems an awful job though.
  5. I'm trying to set up Skype. I can connect but can't use mic. I ran sound recorder to test the mic and get "Failed to create Gstreamer encoding elements. Check your encoding setup" I have no idea what this means. Can anyone help, please? Mdriva 2005 LE AC 97 audio controller, Alsa driver BTW I get no sound in Amarok though sound in general works. Finlay
  6. Many thanks for this. That did the trick :D sorry for the delay in replying.
  7. Just upgraded to Mandriva LE 2005. Alsamixer works just fine but the gnome volume control slider defaults to bottom. When I select Open Volume Control I get the message "Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found". Anyone any ideas?
  8. Now Sorted. The answer was the latest driver 2.2 Many thanks for your help
  9. Many thanks for this. You are very kind to go to all this trouble. I've now printed the notes you gave me the URL to. I have a lot of work to do so won't be able to get into Linux till some time tomorrow. Whatever happens, I'll get back to you and let you know how I get on. Once again, thank you so much. You're a star. :D Finlay update: I followed your advice and the driver is now installed, the module loaded and the modem recognised....BUT I get all positive messages until "waiting for modem to be operational" then an error. eagleconfig -w fails to synchronise the modem. I'm going to send the readout from eagleconnect to eagle-usb4linux and see if they can help, though I find their documentation very techie.
  10. Many thanks for getting back to me. It's the 800 E3. I can't even get started because MCC doesn't even recognize the modem. All I get is "unknown device" I just booted into Linux and ran eagleconfig. Chose UK01 and got the message "loading module [error] so obviously something's preventing the module from being loaded.
  11. Yes I've been to this site before. I've downloaded two separate versions of the eagle driver to no effect. I uninstalled the driver I downloaded and installed the version that came with Mdk. Harddrake still lists the modem as an unknown device and no internet connection. The site seems full of people who've failed to get this thing working. It seems to be a matter of chance... Would you be kind enough to tel me exactly what you did to set it up?
  12. The big question is : How do I install the module? I thought the rpm would do that automatically.
  13. Further to this: I installed the rpm as you suggested. But still no module and no connection to the internet Please tell me what I'm doing wrong here. I have the modem connected (runs under Windows). run the rpm and it installs. Open MCC/ intenet/new connection. check ADSL check ppoA (I've also tried ppoe) check don't connect on boot (because the one time I checked connect on boot the boot process stopped at bringing up interface ppp0) check connect now and nothing happens. I get you don't seem to be connected to the internet. Reboot. Same. Am I missing some configuration steps? Is there a connection frontend? I'm getting my work done in Windows - but not happily. Any advice gratefully received and will be much appreciated.
  14. lsmod doesn't list the eagle... I didn't use the rpm but I'll give it a go. As to the modem I just took the one they sent me. There was no choice, I'm afraid. BTW here's a fuller description of what happened when installing the eagle driver: It got to "loading module OK" then "loading DSP and options [error]" I rebooted and did startadsl and got "modem is not operational, check eaglestat" . Did so and got eagle-usb module not loaded" Sigh.
  15. I recently received one of these from Tiscali. harddrake reports an unknown device. When I set up the connection using MCC it fails at testing the connection with "you don't seem to be connected to the internet"! I downloaded the Eagle-usb-2.00 driver and installed it though I get an error about DSL. (I have installed kernel-sources) When I run eaglestat I get an error message about pre-firmware and sometimes a message saying eagle-usb driver not installed. Surely I've just installed the eagle-usb driver! This is driving me mad. Can anyone help, please.
  16. I've been here before and it's driving me mad. I have a Mustek 1200UB plus. I'm running Mandrake 10.1 CE. I run "scanimage --list-devices" and get `gt68xx:libusb:001:002' is a Mustek BearPaw 1200 CU flatbed scanner I run Xsane and try a preview scan. I get either a blank scan and no response from the scanner itself (no sound or movement - brain dead) or mostly I get the message "failed to start scanner: device busy". I then get an icon plunked onto my desktop called "Xsane proc/bus/usb/001/002" If I then click on that I get the same procedure at the end of which the icon has changed its name to Xsane proc/bus/usb/001/004. All I want is a working scanner - it has worked - and a Wastebasket which isn't full of unwanted Xsane icons. The scanner works under MS Windows. Can anyone help?
  17. Hate to state the obvious but have you tried checking your keyboard setup? Go to Configure your desktop/Accessibility/Keyboard layout.
  18. Is no-one else having problems with Evolution? Has no-one experienced similar problems as electra and I?
  19. Could be, only with a dialup connection, I won't be upgrading that way :D I may buy some download CD;s tho'
  20. I've had to give up on Evolution. I imported my calendar from previous version. (infact I've imported a calendar in various formats just to see if it dealt with any one better than others - vCAl .ics etc) but always the same problems. The calendar - maybe two years worth - takes forever to import, well, maybe 20 mins. Then once its there, it takes 4 secs to move from one week to another, at least 12 secs (and sometimes 20!) to move from one month to another. If I move back more than 3 or 4 months one after another I get disc thrashing and nothing moves. (Of course things happen but ve-ery slowly). Evolution was fine in the version released under Mdk 10. They've changed the way it deals with its files and to my mind they've broken it. Anyone else with the same problems? Gone over to using Kontact though I hate the look of it. Mdk 10.1 CE, KDE3.2.3, 160Gb HDD, 512 Mb RAM
  21. Can you please explain in SIMPLE terms just what you mean by rename the user dirs? Do you mean rename /home/bert/ to /home/bill/ ? If so, then what? Create user bill during install? or do you mean create user bert and then copy over everything from /home/bill? I know I'm being thick about this. Please forgive my stupidity and bear with me. I'm keen to install FC2 with the option of going back to Mdk10.
  22. Why not purchase Codeweavers Office and install Quicken itself? That's what I do. Just upgraded my Quicken 98 to 2002 in Linux and it went like a dream.
  23. Working away from home- hence delay. Well, I ran modprobe usb-uhci and rebooted - to no avail. I got No device available. Rebooted into Windows, ran scanner, rebooted into Linux - and lo and behold scanner works. It seems that Windows warms up the usb connection - whatever that means. Go figure. B)
  24. Well lsmod gives me scsi_mod and I'm running kernel 2.6.3-14mdk. There's no append=scsi in lilo. Whatever, the scanner is now working now that I ran it under Windows :D
  25. Agian, as I said: "previously I created adirectory under /usr/shar/sane called gt68xx and copied the file there - this still exists". I'll do man sane-gt68xx and see. Later: However you're right. I had the wrong firmware. I added sbfw.usb to the ones I had in there and the scanner 's now recognised as a Scanexpress UB Plus. Hurrah! BUT.... ONLY IF I FIRST RUN THE SCANNER UNDER WINDOWS. ???
