Guest Anselmi
I´ve been following Ati´s installation guide, but I get thi s error message: [aki@a5a Imut]$ rpm -Uh --force fglrx-4.3.0-3.11.1.i386.rpm error: cannot open lock file ///var/lib/rpm/RPMLOCK in exclusive mode error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm What should I do? Steve Scrimpshire
You must be root to run that command. To become root in a console: su <<hit enter>> <<type root password here...you will see no output...hit enter>> $ <--- This means you are a regular user. # <--- This means you are root. Guest Anselmi
I noticed that after writing :) Something goes wrong even as root [root@a5a Imut]# rpm -Uh --force fglrx-4.3.0-3.11.1.i386.rpm ########################################### [100%] ########################################### [100%] *** Trying to install a precompiled kernel module. *** WARNING *** Tailored kernel module for fglrx not present in your system. Afterwards go to /lib/modules/fglrx and run './make_install.sh' in order to install the module into your kernel's module repository. (see readme.txt for more details.) As of now you can still run your XServer in 2D, but hardware acclerated OpenGL will not work and 2D graphics will lack performance. failed. *** Error: no kernel module build environment - please consult readme. Steve Scrimpshire
Make sure you have the kernel-source installed for your kernel. urpmi kernel-source
Pierre04
Thanks for reading MY mind ... Got the same message, Kernel source is installing as we speak! Thanks! PS - still getting errors. in as su, but I am getting "Permission Denied ' when following the instructions the other fellow posted came up in the error message: *** WARNING *** Tailored kernel module for fglrx not present in your system. You must go to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod subdir and execute './make.sh' to build a fully customed kernel module. Guest no0tic
The error "permission denied" is due to the fact that you have the old radeon driver loaded. I've done it in this way. I went into a ttyN ( Ctrl+Alt+N N=1,2,3,4,5,6) logged in as root and turned into init level 3 (#init 3). Now you have no X server running and you can unload radeon and agpgart modules. Reinstall fglrx, build the module and install it, and run fglrxconfig; when it asks for internal or external agp module, answer for external agpgart module. I think it' s all. Jet2k5
For me I found that those drivers didn't work just messed things up for me and caused me to re-install Linux *cought, Steve * . I just now a few days ago compiled my own kernel with the ATI drivers in it. And I went from 640 FPS to around 3500FPS I know that 3500 is not that great but from 640 and a laptop video card I can't be happier. -Luis
Pierre04
So it is a "re-compile your kernel" thing... Well, I would be *quite* happy with the frame rates you describe Luis! I know that the eVGA nVidia 6800 has hit down, should be in hand today. Guess that I should learn this re-compile thing now and get comfortable with it! Thanks for the HOPE ! (grin) I will get this sorted out...
Jet2k5
Yeah, Depends on your video card I for example have the Mobility M6 which is a laptop video card intergraded I think so yeah, those are the best numbers to my knowledge that you can squeze out of my video card. But if you have something else something much never then I'm sure you will get 20 times better FPS than I do. When I recompiled my kernel the config file that I was using was pretty much specially made for my laptop. Since ac_dispatcher ( they guy who helped me & guided me thrue my first kernel compile, has the same laptop pretty much ) So not only did I fix my video card but it also fixed many other things like the driver for my touchpad, the volume keys on the side (which I never got to work before ) and many other cool things I didn't know I would ever get working. For now you should just stick to learning more read around get to know a few people you know. I'm still pretty new to Linux and everyone kept on telling me that I could not compile a kernel that I was a n00b ( and yes these people are from this board ) but I was able to manage and thankfully ac_dispatcher helped me and I came out victorious. But comiling a kernel is easy I though it would be much harder but it's not that really just depends on what your options are. -Luis

Jet2k5
Oh yeah I did make a mistake it's not 3500 FPS it's more like just plain old frames. :0 silly me. -Luis
