  1. Being a member of the "multiple installs" I can say that it has helped me learn more bout the way things work... In other fields they refer to this as "spaced repetion learing"... (grin) I do "cheat" and suppliment with documentation. Now if I could just get really good at backup and restoration processes with Linux I would be waaaay ahead of my curve. Good thread, very valid topic. Critical component - TEST YOUR RESTORES of your DOCUMENTATION!!! Installing the OS is no big deal... it's addressing all the customization that matters...
  2. Couldn't find my Theme Manager till I searched for it... and there it wes! Otherwise, I was thinking like you were... "These guys are nuts, ain't no Theme Manager Here..." Uhm... it's there... HTH
  3. Sweet! I love it when I find a good thread... that is pertinent to my quetions. Just got done whacking a perfectly good MDK 10.1 Official to try out Fedora I386 Core 4. It was a total waste of time. I DO have a nice, clean MDK 10.1 install now though... (grin) In all honesty, the downloaded ISO's didn't test out clean. Did em at work on a T-1 and managed all four disks in one day... but errors duing the testing phase of the install... and it's very Gnome based! KDE just didn't seem to go in clean... so... Been lookin at the Linux 64bit concept, and it seems still very immature. Going to try the CheapISO.com deal to get several versions inexpensively. Currently have the MDK 2005LE in I386 and 64bit versions, KUbunto 5.04, Fedora Core 4 i396, Fedora Core 4 x86-64, Xandros 3.01, and Knoppix 3.8.1 all on disk, on the way, for only $47.95 - and I CAN think of other things to do with my Internet connection in the mean time... (grin) Hopefully the ISOs will check out fine. I guess that all I NEED to do is figure out a backup strategy that makes sense. Windows XP Pro 64Bit seems to work just fine. Noticably faster than the Std XP Pro version. I haven't had probs with drivers. Hopefully the Linux versions will do as well. The "Linux" box is all nVidia based which seems to do better in my experience. Thanks for the info on your trials. I guess that we just need to hang in there on this evolution. L8ter...
  4. >>>Bump<<< Any thoughts on this issue? TIA!
  5. Okay, managed to get all the updates installed except the "qt3-common-3.3.3-27.1.101mdk" which still issues the same error. Can I, or should I, FORCE the installation of this an RPM? This is what the package details per RPMDrake: *Begin Description* Name: qt3-common Version: 3.3.3-27.1.101mdk Size: 589 KB Importance: bugfix Medium: update_source Currently installed version: 3.3.3-26mdk Summary: config, language file for Qt Reason for update: A problem exits in qt3 on the x86_64 platform when trying to switch an application to fullscreen mode. The updated packages correct the issue. %update This update brings into sync the x86 version of qt3 and also provides the 32bit compatability packages for x86_64. *End Description* I am running the i586 version, not the 64bit. Am I even concerned about this after reviewing the update description? TIA!
  6. Thanks for the suggestion anon. I did change to a couple of different sources after your suggestion. No Joy, same error message. So - I decided to try from some other GUI - Gnome 2.6 runnning the RPMDrake gets the same error. I think I will force a file system check and see what happens... after I back up the system of course... (grin) Any other suggestions? I am holding about 250Megs of updates back with this error... I appreciate the assistance!
  7. Greetings to All,, Been struggling with this error for a while. Perhaps someone has conquered it in the past, and can point me in the right direction. Security updates complete with no issues. When I attempt to installBug Fixes and Normal Updates I get this error: "There was a problem during the installation: qt3-common = 3.3.3-26mdk is needed by (installed) libqt3-3.3.3-26mdk" Looks like a version issue, dependancy issue, or compatability issue... The Linux install is MDK 10.1 Official. Uname -r reports MDK 2.6.8.1-12mdk rpm -qa|grep kernel reports kernel-2.6.8.1.12mdk-1-1mdk nvidia-kernel-2.6.8.1-12mdk-6111-1mdk How do I go about resolving this? Yup, Linux NOOB ... HELP! (grin) TIA!
  8. And while we are talking about it, which shuttle are you running? I am on the SN95G5 myself. Just did the MDK 10.1 Official upgrade over the weekend. It installed the Nvidia 6111 drivers for me. I know that v6629 is the current rev, but can't get it installed... something about the nvidia-kernel-2.6.8.1-12mdk-6111-1mdk being installed...(grin) It just never stops if I don't stop upgrading... (grin) The reason I ask about the shuttle you are running - NForce isn't required on my system for the lan and as you pointed out, the lan is the part that actually worked! So shoot me your shuttle specs, and perhaps between all of us we can bugger... Uhm I mean fugger... um... no.. I mean FIGURE this out... (grin) HTH...
  9. Greetings to All, Thanks for the great info here... It has been most beneficial! Have been running triple boot under Lilo sucessfully for a while - MDK 10.0 OE, FC2, and XP - These co-existed just fine... On another system I was using FC3 and XP - They existed just fine... and l liked the KDE 3.3 that FC3 had... Well, time to transition this particular system to XP Media Center Edition.... so thought that I would install FC3 on the triple boot system. Install went fine. No issues at all... until reboot. Went to verify that all OSs had survived, and lo and behold MDK 10.0 OE would not start! Received an error that the root drive was corrupted and needed e2fsck run on it, but I needed a new version of e2fsck! Dug out the MDK 10 manual, and ran the fsck -pa hda5, and no way would it run... So I reinstalled root. Working great, nvidia drivers reinstalled, sweet! I am back up and running with zero data loss and triple booting too! Reboot - load FC3 - run around in there a bit - reboot - load MDK 10 - same error again!!! Reinstall root - yada yada yada - exit to test FC3 - return to MDK 10 - Just NOW completed the 3rd rebuild of MDK 10 root drive and mysteriously the FC3 partitions GOT WHACKED!!! (mumble gruple) Seriously, I said heck with THIS and deleted the FC3 partitions... MDK 10 works pretty well... So - finally the question - Was the different kernel of FC3 introducing files on the MDK partition and messing up the program? Would it be possible to upgrade the e2fsck file and maintain compatibility? I would like to continue expanding the "flavors" of linux that I am exposed to... Sure, I would like to get more familiar with the FC3 KDE 3.3 apps, but sheesh... I am not that interested in rebulding every other day... Thanks in advance for the excellent help available here...
  10. Hmmm... While reading I suspect the hardware over other potential issues. 2 CD/DVD drives, One SATA, and 1 IDE drive. Most HP/Dell/gateway systems only run 2 IDE channels, and you need the slave/master settings correct. I don't appreciate the IDE cable design much = Looks too easy to damage each end of the header during removal... cheap to replace however. You may want to double check your cable settings and/or cables. To install, all you need is a CD, unless you got the DVD version... Drop one of the CD/DVD drives off during installation. I would disco the DVD first myself... then see how it runs. Oh yah - physically pull the data cable off the disco'd drive... Just to be sure. If that config still gives you issues, leave the DVD disco'd and pull the SATA PCI card, and try again... System at stock speed I assume on the HP - They don't overclock so good... if at all .... New stuff in Old system can cause issues... somthing above might just fix it, and it won't cost ya a dime. Being a cheap-skate when it comes to PC's comes naturally to me (grin) and I have learned to check the inexpensive (or free) things first... HTH!
  11. Hey Gowator, I definitly agree - AMD64 version so far isn't worth the $12 I paid for the disks from LinuxCentral... I am REALLY glad I didn't pick up the $129 version!!! looks like it's just not ready for prime time. Wonder what the 10.1 release will do for it... but I won't hold my breath... Good thing it's a triple boot with the MDK 10.0 Official 32bit version still running like a champ... I appreciate the feedback... L8ter...
  12. having some issues with Mandrakes AMD64 v10.0 Official version. Perhaps someone has the answers... While installing the nVidia 6800 video drivers I was getting lots of whining about no kernel-source installed. So I did a "urpmi kernel-source-2.6.3-11mdk" and fed the appropriate CD's as requested. ended up with: $ rpm -qa | grep kernel kernel-source-2.6.3-11mdk kernel-2.6.3.11mdk-1-1mdk So, the kernel-source is installed. nVidia drivers went along and whined a bit about rivafb, but began to compile... and bailed in the middle of it with an error about the rivafb modules. So, did an rmmod rivafb which stated no rivafb was found in the modules dir. What's my next move? This no 3D and low res view of MDK sucks... your suggestions please... Next issue - It was a no brainer to install FireFox on the MDK 10.0 Official. Under the MDK AMD64 v10.0 Official, I get no install, no error messages... Whaz up with Dat? Any thoughts on this... I appreciate your help. I am now at a triple boot with Win XP, MDK v10.0, and MDK AMD64 10.0 just because I get great info. Thanks!
  13. Hey to All, Been running v10.0 Ofifcial for a couple of months now. Just a couple of observations: Video can be dificult to get to the full speed of the adapter. Slow video will take the speedy windows system to sluggish operation. I had major unresolvable (for a Linux NoOb anyway) issues with ATI getting it to 3D mode. Switched to the nVidia 6800 128 card, had minor issues that were easily overcome in a couple of hours. 3D now runs, and the system is wickedly fast! Hardware can make you or break you just like under windows. Most of my issues were with the video, but with a nVidia NForce 3 board, I do have some unresolved errors that don't seem to actually effect operation. LAN reports errors on shutdown, but still is fully functional. There is a compatibility page on the Mandrake site: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fdoc.php3 Other great sites for help http://usalug.org/phpBB2/portal.php http://www.linuxhelp.net/forums/ http://www.linux.org/ http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux.html HTH!
  14. Upgrade of hardware went fine. Still waiting on the AMD64 version of Mandrake ordered from LinuxCentral.com... Been a week. Got the nVidia card running on i686-up-4Gb - Just performed the nVidia driver install right after the Mandrake 10 install, then updated via the Mandrake Update wizard in the system/configuration/packaging menu So far so good... C'mon AMD64 version! Thanks again for the help!
  15. Hey Fissy, Well sort of... the Mandrake AMD 64 is on order, but not here yet. I will be pulling the eVGA nVidia 6800 out this weekend and setting it into the SN95G5 that was dropped off this afternoon at work... Setup the windows (sorry, it's what I work with) and then be ready when the Mdk AMD64 shows up. Now I just need to prep the SN45G for SALE to pay for the new rig! That means setting up the ATI AIW 9000 in the new box... which probably won't have Linux on it, unless the buyer wants to pay me to set it up (shich would be a BIG mistake on their part!(grin)) Thanks for the reply though... Shuttles have been little *STUDS* for me so far. Testing a SB75G2 w/ 200Gb SATA Raid in it at work as a file server. It cooks for me, and I don't mean temperature wise. L8ter!
