idud
Hello everybody. Let's imagine if we are to make a new livecd. Please do tell me what packages/facilities that you want add. Thx for your responses.
Gowator
First define the use for the LiveCD.... Recovery..? Demonstrations ? Quick hard disk install? Media centre...? Mobile office (USB key)? etc. etc. My idea of a live Cd is it should have a purpose... beyond just being a liveCD.. then define which packages are appropraite to that function.... jlc
I like recovery & security tools on my live-cd.
liquidzoo
I can think of 2 things that you should include, one for each of Gowator's first 2 questions. Both are WM's Recovery: Doesn't need to be fancy. Fluxbox and Eterm would be all I need for this. Any minimalist WM would do for this purpose. A recovery cd is just that, for recovery. A flashy WM wouldn't be needed. Give us the tools without the flash. Demonstration: This is where you need the flash. My vote would be KDE with a good theme. Gnome would be alright too, but it would have to have a good theme that shows up by default. Demonstration cd's should show off what you can do with Linux, and everyone loves eye candy, even Windows users. Don't believe me? Gowator
yep just to clarify what I meant.... The liveCD is done to death but thats not a bad thing... knoppix absolutely rocks (IMHO) and PClinuxOS is very cool etc. however lots of specialist areas exist...where liveCd's are brilliant... the secret IMHO is to aim it for a niche... (Check out anna's posts and documentation project... too...) I would count a Bhasa regionalised distro as a good idea.... for instancwe building on regionalisation and even kdict etc. for online translations... the point being you can do all the tweaking for YOUR distro to work like if you want office install the regionalised suppport etc... For Indonesia Id go light on WM and office and avoid bloat since many people wont have the extra RAM to run this live... If the CD is destined as a hard drive install then make usre it gives a standard install after... this is IMHO a fault with STD knoppix... and why I personally use kanotix... for liveCD installs. If you give a CD to someone hoping to convert them and install then it helps if that they install is a bit standardised....(i.e. knoppix installed is almost debian but some things like the init scripts still have vestiges opf being a liveCD... ) So I'd say name your audience... local or international and the purpose of the live CD first... IMHO recoveryCD is done to death... Media centre is well covered and mobile office is already done...
jlc
I thought of another live-cd need/idea "destruction" ;-) Something that would rip a hd/memory a part but still leave it intact to be able to install again. You know for those times you need to get rid of all the evidence
