There is configuration tool in X that can change that setting. I believe it is under system-->configuration-->mandrake-->drakconf...something like that.. It'll be the screen that gives you all the configuration options for users, hardware, screen resolution etc. If you click on the one for hardware you get to another menu that has X as an option and that is the one where you can uncheck a little box that says "start x automatically".

 

I had the same problem a couple of days ago...it was hard to find too, because instead of being under the "signon" or "users" option x configuration falls under a sub-menu ("hardware").

Edit the file /etc/inittab to read init 3 instead of init 5. Look for this line:

id:5:initdefault:

Change it to read

id:3:initdefault:

mcc>Boot>???? -uncheck 'launch the graphical environment at boot'

these two do the gui above;

 

chkconfig dm off

and edit inittab as described above.
