  1. try this: another post on how to get 4G ipods to work
  2. nevermind, the problem was not in ~/session it was a problem with kmail/kontact/whatever that package is called. If it starts everything freezes, i can only move the pointer, and the only way out is ctrl+alt+bkspace. I will figure this out...somehow. Maybe a reinstall of the o'l kmail could do it.
  3. I installed Thac's RPMs after carefully doing the urpmi dance and everything seemed ok. I had the menu entry missing problem which was fixed easily and i had a couple of other minor issues. However, when i went to startup this morning kde froze towards the end of its startup. Solution: I renamed ~/.kde to ~/.kde-back and restarted x and it worked...no freeze ups. So i've been migrating stuff from kde-back to kde to find out what is messed up. The problem seems to be something in ~/.kde/share/config/session/ So i whiped that clean and it starts up fine (with messed up icons and nothing left open from my last session). I'll continue migrating the rest of the files and i'll let anyone know if anything else is to blame.
  4. Problem pretty much solved! I removed all gcc versions on my computer. Then i reinstalled and tried each one. Things only seemed to compile with 3.4 for some reason. However, ver 0.3.2 of powermated wouldn't compile the xmms portion for some reason. So I compiled 0.3.1 which worked quite well with the exception of not being able to use the beep library stuff to have the led pulse to the music (luckily i don't want to do that anyways) I would also like to say that the developer of this software was extremely helpful, friendly, and knowledgable. He is exactly what we love about the open source community.
  5. I was completely wrong. Boy do i feel foolish right now. I wasn't thinking right and forgot to look for the devel packages. Oh well. The new problem is that powermated won't compile (everything else works just fine). It spits out this error: PMDaemon.cpp: In member function `bool PMDaemon::performAction(PMDActionType, int, int*, const char*)': PMDaemon.cpp:744: internal compiler error: in optimize_mode_switching, at lcm.c:1225 Please submit a full bug report, with preprocessed source if appropriate. How should I go about fixing this? (also mods, should this be a new post?)
  6. recently i've been trying to compile several programs from source and i've been getting errors when i run the config scripts. They usually say something like cannot find X, where X is actually installed (including its libraries) and it properly in use by other programs. So far these are the programs and the libraries/components they can't find: powermated: can't find alsa...right now i'm listening to xmms with alsa so its there. http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=23143 checking for snd_mixer_open in -lasound... no configure: error: You must have ALSA Installed xmms-plugin for powermate checking for glib-config... no checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.0... no *** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found *** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in *** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the *** full path to glib-config. configure: error: *** GLIB >= 1.2.0 not installed - please ins tall first *** TORCS: checking for X... no checking for GL/glut.h... no configure: error: Can't find GL/glut.h. Please check config.log and if you can't solve the problem send the file to eric.espie@free.fr with the subject "torcs compilation problem" These are not the only programs i have this problem with. Does anyone have any ideas or see any pattern forming? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  7. ok, I just got the powermate in the mail today. It plugs in and is regocnized and all (turns blue, harddrake/dmesg show all is well). However, when i got to compile powermated i get an error while running ./configure that says i don't have alsa installed. This is, of course, false. I do have alsa running and it's what i use for puredata, xmms, and everything. Any ideas?
  8. I just ordered a griffin powermate (glorified volume knob). I was wondering if anyone here has one up and running on their computer yet. So far I've gone to these websites and they seem pretty informative. http://sourceforge.net/projects/powermated/ http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Griffin_Power...nd_Kernel_2.6.x http://groomlakelabs.com/grandamp/code/ http://powermated.sourceforge.net/ From what I read their is a good change that my 2.6 kernel has the driver already in it. If not i'm going to try and not recompile but build the module. I'll post the how to on here after I actually get the device and get it working. Maybe I'll include some pretty pictures too.

  11. Some KDE programs create these backup files that end in a "~". I'd like to change the configuration so that it makes these files begin with a "." so they are hidden. Where do i do that?
  12. I'm setting up the ol' ipod on my gf's comp and i'd like to make some scripts for mounting and ejecting the ipod. so far i have one that goes: su mount <mounting stuff> exit exit and i have it running through a link on the desktop which lets it run in a terminal window. I'd like her to be ablet click the icon, type in her password, and have the terminal window close. how do i do this? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  13. ok...my problem has been solved One of my gf's roomates moved out and the wireless started working perfectly. He was a guy with an old windows box that had lots of viruses, spyware, etc. So i'll blame that and be happy that it works.
  14. Yeah, I think that might've been the problem. I've got it working now. All i had to do was add "ifconfig eth0 down" and "dhcpcd wlan0" into rc.local to get a v4 IP addy. Only problem i'm having now is that its really really slow and it just froze the computer... dmesg puts out: "ndiswrapper (ndis_set_rx_mode_proc:588): Unable to set packet filter (C00000BB)" pinging google gets me 29.5 ms at first then "Destination Host Unreachable" then 25.7 ms and other semi normal times for a while then unreachable again. Could this be a sensitivity issue? iwconfig shows: Bit rate:12Mb/s (should be 54) Sensitivity=-200 dBm RTS thr:2346 B Fragment thr:2346 B Link quality 92/100 Signal level: -88 dBm Noise level: -256 dBm Rx incalid nwid:0 Rx invlaid crypt:0 Rx invlaid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:8 invalid misc :457 Missed beacon:0 (this is after going to google a few times and constantly pinging it)
  15. ok so I made more progress... I installed the winXP drivers from the second link (mentioned above) and everything went as planned. I also installed the latest ndiswrapper. Now in iwconfig I am shown that it is connected to the "linksys" wireless network which means it is working...sort of. I can also change modes and all other settings in iwconfig now. However, I cannot browse to any pages...I can't even ping or browse to the router itself. What do I do next?
  16. Tonight I started messing around with all the drivers you can download at http://www.asus.it/support/download/item.a...38g&Type=Latest . I installed and tried all of them. The ones for Win98,2000, and ME just plain didn't work. The ones for XP almost worked...the ones in the "ap" folder load with ndiswrapper but are reported as "hardware found. fuzzy". I found that this means it cannot fully communicate with the device. Specifically, if cannot change the mode to managed...however, iwconfig did report and can change other settings. If I install the drivers from the other folder ("sta" I think) then ndiswrapper seems to install them fine and reports "hardware found" (no fuzzy). However, I get a similar instruction mode send error in dmesg. So basically it works, but i can't set the mode...so it doesn't work. I think the problem could be the drivers...so tomorrow I'm going to download ftp://ftp1.planet.com.tw/Wireless_Lan/WL-...-WL3563v230.zip and give those drivers a try. I may also try compiling the newest ndiswrapper too to see if that helps. This seems hopefull at least from the post on the ndiswrapper wiki "Same Chipset as D-Link DWL-G510. Took Win98 Driver. WinXP Drivers fails unloading. Tested with Debian testing 2.6.7, Ndiswrapper 0.10, Ndiswrapper CVS."
  17. i like the second...dummy proof method...override it after it happens even though you don't know why it is messed up. I'll try it, but I can't anytime soon, as I am on winter break and didn't bring my 3 monitors home.
  18. Same soft of problem here: Marvell card identified by harddrake. -ndiswrapper 0.8 -when i load ndiswrapper with "modprobe ndiswrapper" everything works fine...I even checked dmesg and there are no errors reported -"ndiswrapper -l" shows hardware found -iwconfig shows "lo no wireless extensions eth0 no wireless extensions" -also, even though i did a "ndiswrapper -m" ndiswrapper does not load on startup; i have to "modprobe ndiswrapper" to get it up (I checked modules.conf and the "alias..." line is there -I once saw a wireless command/program that was used to bring up wireless card...like to turn them on. -I get this idea from the fact that the light on the back of the card hasn't gone on. -the card is good...it works in winxp
  19. I've installed the latest nvidia drivers correctly but I've go a few problems: 1) I keep getting this: Error: Could not open /dev/nvidiactl because the permissions are too restrictive. Please see the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS section of /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README for steps to correct. to which I corrected the problem following the directions at nvidia's website which include deleting a line from a pam config file and resetting the permissions on the /dev/nvidia* files. This works but every once in a while the permissions get reset and if i try to run glxgears or glx info as a user i get the above error. 2) Even when I'm allowed to run glxgears/glxinfo and the permissions are set right games don't recognize that there is 3d accelerations enabled. For instance planshift (www.planshift.it) returns: Warning: Failed to load `gl3d'; use '-verbose' argument for details. Warning: Failed to load `gl3d'; use '-verbose' argument for details. However, I've never really messed around with pam and I suspect that permissions for something are to blame. Its a matter of letting the 3d programs see that 3d acceleration is enabled. 20. I'm in the process of designing an in car pc.... it will do the following -read from accelerometers to do 1/4 times, estimate hp, etc. -read from o2 sensors...graph...record and spit out info -use a ready made 12v powersupply and power on protection circuit -play DVD's...not really a big deal but something has to be bling -run mdk -no gps...no gps...but maps and directions, yes This project will be similar to the other onboard pc projects people have made in the past except it will have a performance focus and not a ICE focus. My major question to you all is: where can i find some good accelerometers, temp sensors (that can withstand high exhaust temps), etc. that will interface with a pc?
  21. my tips... -apple makes nice machines but they are expensive for what you are getting...so if you don't intend to dual boot with osX don't get one. (if you like the pretty industrial design work on one get a sony viao...they are pretty) -think about what you are really going to use the machine for...do you have a large at home machine you use for just about everything or will this be your primary computer? Perhaps it will just be a glorified pda for you...in which case get a lower spec machine and save $$? -sometimes setting up the X windowing sys is diffucult on a laptop...but don't let that get you down. There are plenty of people out there who will help you out. -getting the built in buttons on a laptop (volume, etc.) can be a PITA...but worth it -if you get a tablet pc getting the tablet part to work will be a PITA...but worth it (the tablet is actually just a wacom tablet thing) -test out the laptops at the stores around you...use knoppix to test out their functionality. Also, don't buy from retail stores, buy from a reputable mail order place. However, use the store to pick out what features you like and don't like (size, weight, screen, pointer, keyboard, ports, etc.) -after you buy one, get a padded sleeve and not a laptop bag...if you are like me you will want to use a backpack that isn't your laptop bag from time to time and you don't want to just throw the laptop in it. -keep in mind that upgrading a laptop is not as easy/cheap as upgrading a pc -laptops get hot...or at least some of them do...this might suck if you want to use it in your lap for long periods of time...a burning crotch is no fun -most of the port replicators manufacturers sell are a waste of money....buy yourself a cheap usb hub instead -batteries don't last forever...they won't recharge an infinite number of times Okay so it sounds like i don't want anyone to get a laptop. Well i'm just writting from experience about the things i think you should be aware of before getting one. None of these were real deal breakers for me. I own a dell inspiron from a few years ago and it still does me good. (probs with the dell after 4 yrs include a worn out battery that lasts 45 min, a touchpad that drifts around the screen and had to be disabled, a broken hinge which i replaced). I'd say get one...just don't get one because they are 'cool'
  22. I spent quite a bit of time looking for this online last night and only got a partial answer.... I want a program that takes the straggler mp3's i have that have not ID3 tag info, reads a digital signature of the file and looks up the file name. I know windows media player does this and after some looking around i found it contacts the all music guide (AMG), but i couldn't find anything in linux that does that. The closest thing was a wine setup of mbtagger but that requires a whole bunch of win98 dll's and for full functionality an IE install (something i refuse to do). Does anyone know of any other way to tag single songs?
  23. Supposedly it is possible to put vcalendar files on the ipod and have them show up in the ipod calendar. I've been able to export a calendar form Kontact (part of the kde pim) and it looks like it is formatted fine. However, the ipod only show the first even i put in the calendar and none of the other ones. Does anyone know why? or how to fix this? Ok so this is a dumb one...if i delete the blank lines in between calendar entries it works...this is dumb
