What does fstab look like?

And, what does /mnt loolk like?

I know you know this stuff, but going over it with someone else might discover the obvious! :P

Don't be too sure that I know this stuff.

CD-RW: /mnt/cdrom

Bus: ‎ide

Drive capacity: ‎burner

Channel: ‎secondary

New devfs device: ‎/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd

Old device file: ‎/dev/hdc

Media class: ‎cdrom

DVD: /mnt/cdrom2

Bus: ‎ide

Drive capacity: ‎DVD

Channel: ‎secondary

New devfs device: ‎/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target1/lun0/cd

Old device file: ‎/dev/hdd

Media class: ‎cdrom

Is this the kind of info you were talking about?

OK, I'll be more specific.

Open the file /etc/fstab in a editor and post its contents here. Are you using the 2.6.x kernel? I might as well look at /etc/lilo.conf, too. If you could post these two files, I'll see if I can help! B)

I noticed that your cd devices are on the same ide channel. I used to build computers avoiding that situation, as occassionally I encountered problems with two cd devices on the same channel.

I have had both both drives in the same ide for awhile, I haven't noticed any problems, but that doesn't mean that there hasn't been any. which one do you suggest I move on with the harddrive?

Let's try something. Edit out the word "supermount" in the cd lines of fstab. Reboot, and see if either MagicMount works or if you can use the mount command in a console.

Hi IX

I took out the supermount, and I tried mounting it in a konsole and it said that it was a directory, I don't know what mountmagic is. I still coundn't access my drive.

I keep getting an error that says the permissions are wrong for /home/kilimanjaro/tmp/orbit-kilimanjaro

My fstab no longer shows supermount, and the new mounting system in Mandrake 10 works fine on my system. It's the first linux automount that has worked. Here is my fstb

/dev/hdd1 / reiserfs notail 1 1
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hdd6 /home reiserfs notail 1 2
/dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0
/dev/hda2 /mnt/win_d vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /tmp tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hdd7 /usr reiserfs notail 1 2
/dev/hdd5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hdd8 /mnt/SuSE_root reiserfs notail 1 2
/dev/hdd9 /mnt/SuSE_home reiserfs notail 1 2

The only thing showing supermount is my floppy, which I never use. (It's diabled)

Hi IX

I changed my fstab to look like yours and it still won't work, I just noticed that when I try to open my cd drives there is a little lock symbol on the file browser, could there be a problem with permissions? I will try to open it as root and reply.

Are you sure your /mnt directory has the correctly named folders in it? It is really odd for root to not access a device! (actually, it is sort of an emergency!)

Hi, I am having the problem described too. Just a few days ago I updated my mandrake from 9.2 to 10 official, and today I cannot access my cd drive.

Here's my fstab file:

/dev/hda3 / ext2 defaults 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=auto,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-13,sync,codepage=775 0 0
none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,iocharset=iso8859-13,codepage=775,sync,umask=0 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs iocharset=iso8859-13,umask=0,ro 0 0
/dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat iocharset=iso8859-13,codepage=775,umask=0 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda2 swap swap defaults 0 0

and my /etc/lilo.conf file is (surprisingly) empty.... But lilo.conf-old has this:

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
vga=normal
default="windows"
keytable=/boot/ltb-latin7.klt
prompt
nowarn
timeout=150
message=/boot/message
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="linux"
root=/dev/hda3
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi acpi=ht splash=silent"
vga=791
read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="linux-nonfb"
root=/dev/hda3
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi acpi=ht"
read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="failsafe"
root=/dev/hda3
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="failsafe devfs=nomount hdc=ide-scsi acpi=ht"
read-only
other=/dev/hda1
label="windows"
table=/dev/hda
other=/dev/fd0
label="floppy"
unsafe

And I cannot do anything as root either...

Could someone help me with this? :wall:

Hey, finally, I accessed my cdrom, don't exactly know how, I did some changes quite randomly and it worked. Please ignore my last post, because the code displayed could be correct already.
