You can tunnel your vnc session through ssh.  Very secure.  They have an explanation of how to do this over at mandrakeuser.org.  Notice there is no 'S'.  The URL is ...

I'll second this method, I used it today while "cough" working from home :D

Indeed XDMCP is not secure, but it works well with broadband access.

If you want a leaner and more secure solution, you should use TightVNC over SSH.

Mandrake tool (rfbdrake or something like that) is based on TightVNC but I don't know if it is using SSH.
