machine name setting in 10.0 CE

After installing ML you get a screen with the overview of the installation, in there I set up my network again and fill in the appropiate hostname (s).

After changing smb.conf, Trinity (XP & ML 10.0 CE) and Morpheus (ML 10.0 CE) are recognized in Matrix (my network).

:P

I might like to change hostname to something neat, but find nothing like what you mention maybe 'cause I'm not on a LAN/network whatever?

this is a home computer, connects only by dial-up to ISP.

I find in /etc/sysconfig/networking this:

DEVICE=lo

IPADDR=127.0.0.1

NETMASK=255.0.0.0

NETWORK=127.0.0.0

# If you're having problems with gated making 127.0.0.0/8 a martian,

# you can change this to something else (255.255.255.255, for example)

BROADCAST=127.255.255.255

ONBOOT=yes

NAME=loopback

which is all either meaningless or gibberish. As usual.

Comments please.

you can use the 'hostname' command to set your hostname. man hostname.

Those settings aren't gibberish, they are what enable you to connect to your own computer, although i have absolutely no clue what 'a martian' is, apart from a small green alien...

hostname always resets after a reboot. You have to insert it somewhere so it is re-ran each time you boot. Also, you can use the MCC setup for your network connection and click the Advanced (or expert whatever) option and type the new hostname in the fields provided..

Try this faq and see if its still accurate. If not, let us know..

Humm, I don't think it's there in 10.0 :unsure:

I find in /etc/sysconfig/networking this:

do you have an /etc/sysconfig/network file? this is where HOSTNAME= is set (as paul mentions).

for me /etc/sysconfig/networking is a directory, and it looks like you're looking at ifcfg-lo inside that directory - definitely not what you want :)
