phunni
What do you get when you run glxinfo or glxgears ? That'll confirm whether it's really worked ;)

fissy
direct rendering: No  not yet sadly Sue, with your card you should get thousands of fps doing glxgears, the direct rendering: NO tells you that there is no hardware acceleration.  when you're in the GUI, open a terminal, su to root and try this "lsmod"

This is the ati driver.  You can see if you can get it to work by doing $modprobe fglrx as root then logging out and logging back in again. I think that restarts X, if it doesn't you might have to do it manually.  Unfortunately there might be another problem. scanning down our glxinfo, they're not the same in many places. The opengl vendor and extentions are different. That might mean games aren't going to work too well... we can try and sort that out later though, first try and get direct rendering to work at all... do the modprobe fglrx and log out/login  -fissy  ps good luck! Guest Brit
Hi fissy  I tried to fglrxconfig again..to make sure that i had done it right, and this is what i got.  I must say that im getting tottally confused.  Tailored kernel module for fglrx not present in your system. You must go to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod subdir and execute './make.sh' to build a fully customed kernel module. Afterwards go to /lib/modules/fglrx and run './make_install.sh' in order to install the module into your kernel's module repository. (see readme.txt for more details.)  As of now you can still run your XServer in 2D, but hardware acclerated OpenGL will not work and 2D graphics will lack performance.  failed. *** Error: no kernel module build environment - please consult readme. Installed: qt3 (gcc 3.2) based control panel application === ATI display drivers successfully installed please run 'fglrxconfig' now === [root@localhost downloads]# cd /lib/modules/fglrx [root@localhost fglrx]# ls build_mod/ fglrx_info.txt make_install.sh* [root@localhost fglrx]# cd /build_mod bash: cd: /build_mod: No such file or directory [root@localhost fglrx]# cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod [root@localhost build_mod]# ./make.sh ATI module generator V 2.0 ========================== initializing... kernel includes at /usr/src/linux/include not found or incomplete file: /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h [root@localhost build_mod]# ./make.sh ATI module generator V 2.0 .  failed. fissy
i think whats happening is: make.sh tries to make the fglrx module for the particular version of the linux kernel you are running. To do this it needs to see the source code of your kernel. Mandrake made a catastropic oversight of not including this in the 9.2 distribution... if you search the forums you should be able to find out how to install your kernel source. its something like urpmi kernel-source. Â i hope you have broadband... -fissy
vaughn
Sue, Â I had exactly the same problems as you - and I did manage to solve them in the end (mostly) following the instruction listed by NBN here http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ar...004/01/3/122744 Â Those instructions aren't much help when it comes to answering all of the questions that fglrxconfig throws at you. Unfortunately I don't have those details on me at the moment. I'll try to get them to you in a day or so. phunni
If you know your monitor details (horizontal sync etc...) then most of the other stuff in fglrxconfig is fairly straight forward. Â If you get the kernel sources then you should be able to compile the drivers and then, hopefully, you will be there...
Guest Brit
Hi all  Ok i got the kernel source and compiled the drivers. So i think it is working!!  I ran glxinfo again this time i got:  [swoo@localhost swoo]$ glxinfo name of display: :0.0 display: :0 screen: 0 direct rendering: Yes server glx vendor string: SGI server glx version string: 1.2 server glx extensions: GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context client glx vendor string: ATI client glx version string: 1.3 client glx extensions: GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context, GLX_ARB_get_proc_address, GLX_ARB_multisample, GLX_ATI_pixel_format_float, GLX_ATI_render_texture GLX extensions: GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. Steve Scrimpshire
Are you running glxgears full screen? If so, that's about normal.
phunni
Is it running in a small window - if so, that's not normal... but the fact that we are told direct rendering is on is good. Â Making real progress! Â The best way to really test this is to run a game that's a bit demanding on your graphics. If it runs smoothly enough for youe to play, then improving your framerates is something you can figure out at your leisure...
aRTee
Small hint on the side:  you did:  [root@localhost downloads]# cd /lib/modules/fglrx [root@localhost fglrx]# ls build_mod/ fglrx_info.txt make_install.sh* [root@localhost fglrx]# cd /build_mod bash: cd: /build_mod: No such file or directory [root@localhost fglrx]# cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod  and the above thing is confusing since you did: cd /build_mod instead of cd build_mod  halfway through....  Apart from that, no comments, looks like you're on the right track. vaughn
>direct rendering: Yes Yeah!  >[swoo@localhost swoo]$ glxgears >343 frames in 5.0 seconds = 68.600 FPS Boo!  There are two things that might cast light on this.  The first is /bin/dmesg  The second is cat /var/log/XFree86.0.log  Also check out these pages http://www.mepis.org/node/view/676 http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/sh...threadid=116159 XF86Config_4
