Just wanted to know if this is normal.

When I play a song in xmms, I'm unable to hear any sounds from gAIM.

The sounds in gAIM will then queue until I turn off the song, then afterwards, will play a notification for every message I recieved during the timespan in which I had the song playing.

SO...

I just wanted to know if this is normal operation. I know in Windows I can do a whole slew of things with audio at the same time (Instant Messanger, Winamp, Media Player, etc.)

Why is it that I can only use one at a time in Linux?

It's normal.. since the nforce2 sound driver in linux doesn't support multiple channel yet. There is a workaround for this. If you use kde, arts must be enabled. For xmms, install xmms-arts plugin and use it. This way, you can still play sound in xmms while still having warning sounds in gaim.
