Kieth Posted January 25, 2004 Report Share Posted January 25, 2004 I recently installed a Typhoon Speednet High Speed PCI card (10/100Mbps) and an Ericsson Hm210 Ethernet modem. Seeing as how I'm not too good with computers, I can't get them to work. Therefore, I once again am calling upon my friends at MandrakeUsers.org for help. Everything works OK with Windows98. Since I read some of the previously posted problems/answers, I know some of the files I should show. I would appreciate any help you could give me to get me "up and running". There are 2 things you must keep in mind, though. 1) I'm not too good with computers, so I would appreciate any explainations in very simple language, 2) I do not even know how an ethernet modem is suppose to work. aRTee Posted January 26, 2004 Report Share Posted January 26, 2004 Could you try the following: use mcc / network to config the adapter and set to the following: Turn it off (you could do this on the commandline too: ifconfig eth0 down) static ip, address: 192.168.0.1 (just don't forget to take out the cable!! ) give any hostname, ignore the mention of qualified stuff. Then put it back on. See if it goes up, run ifconfig again. I think maybe you don't need to set things up for getting a hostname with dhcp; usually it's only the address.. At least, on my cable connection it is, my server has the non-qualified name that I gave it, and an external ip that I can reach from the net. He has more experience with the wizards than me.... I configure these by hand which is either a lot easierr or harder depending on your perspective :D Anyway thats what everything MEANS now Id recommend waiting for aRTee unless your desperate then Ill do it by hand for ya!! aRTee Posted January 27, 2004 Report Share Posted January 27, 2004 I have no idea about the modem lights (didn't they give you a manual?) or pppoe (don't know if you need that; with my cablemodem it is connected anyway and from your eth0:9 value it seems that you may not need anything else either), but in any case, from the output of ifconfig above I can make out that things are not rosey yet: you should not get eth0 first without an ip address, and then eth0:9 with an address... This is zeroconf getting in the way it seems.. Can you give the output of the following: less /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth* and possibly, if there is a file ifcfg-eth0:9 in that directory, delete it I have only one card in this system, with static ip, and the output of $ cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 is: DEVICE=eth0 BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=192.168.0.3 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.0.0 BROADCAST=192.168.0.255 ONBOOT=yes MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=no On my other system (server) I have my network on eth1 and the cablemodem on eth0: $ cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 DEVICE=eth0 BOOTPROTO=dhcp IPADDR=192.168.0.1 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.0.0 BROADCAST=192.168.0.255 ONBOOT=yes MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes NEEDHOSTNAME=no (nevermind that it has a static address, it gets one through dhcp from the cablemodem, even though there is an address there) $ cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 DEVICE=eth1 BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=192.168.0.1 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.0.0 BROADCAST=192.168.0.255 ONBOOT=yes MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes You might just delete all in that dir, and use the mcc + network wizard to set things up, or just make it look like my dhcp version, then do ifconfig eth0 down ifconfig eth0:9 down ifconfig eth0 up or so. I guess you will be!! but make sure else well both end up pulling our hair out!!!! As I understand you have an ETHERNET card AND an internal modem ??? (that would be the sprint thing) It appears you don't have the password and username set for the modem and to do this you need to use the pppoe packages To innstall them have Cd1 handy (at least CD1 in 9.1) Open the Mandrake Control Centre (MCC) and choose Packaging Then choose add programs and click OK when it asks.... Now do a search on pppoe It should find 3 packages, you need to install them all. Im working blind here cos I don't have a running MDK at the moment ... BUT fear not there are quite a few people here able to take over if I foget :D Now you need to go to a console (CLI) and su to root type pppoe then press tab one of these will be config or setup and thats the one you want. At this point you need your username and password from your ISP..... It might help to say who they are becuase conventions change!!! Im with Wanadoo and my username is fti/xxxxxxx and my password xxnxxnnnx (or similar) When it asks for my password I just put fti/xxxxxxx BUT some ISP's want you to put fti/xxxxxxx@wanadoo.fr (or your ISP) Bascially it can be anything they want...... the trick is to make sure your putting in the same thing.....they expect... Add this info and the dialogs should finish.... You want to select ppp0 when it asks.... Once this is done you can bring up the interface with pppoe-down (or is it stop) Type pppoe (then tab and you get three options.... one is start, one is stop and the other the config you just did) Then pppoe-start This should bring up the interface (like an ifup eth0) and if the password and username are correct then your WAN light should stop blinking and go green :D This means your connected.... At this point oif all goes well you should be able to browse the internet.... I did this last time with it more recent in my head so Im going to search my old posts.... Sorry I did not get back sooner, but I was having problems with my ISP, and could not sign in, even on W98. I called them up, and was finally able to get the problem resolved. I do have three questions though. 1) When I start the computer, it still says OK to eth0:9, with the DNS address I posted earlier. Of course it takes a while before it finally goes to eth0:9, because it tries alot with eth0. Is there anyway I could change that? 2) I followed the instructions on the link you listed, which worked great. To sign in, it has me give the command, in root, adsl-start. Is this different than pppoe? 3) Is there a way to make a link on my desktop to start adsl-start, and adsl-stop? Again, thank you very much for helping me. I really appreciate it.
