At the lilo prompt, hit escape and type "linux 3", so that you do not engage x at all. Log in, and type "startx". Post the errors reported.

It sounds like something is not installed properly. Are you sure you installed all the needed libs??

Change the Config file to "nv" and see if x boots OK. If it does, then recompile the nvidia driver. If it doesn't, something happened to x.

Make sure you have the correct kernel sources installed.

For what it's worth...

What Nvidia driver version did you install?

I am running an GF4 420 card (PNY)...

It was working just fine with Version: 1.0-4496 Nvidia Driver (MDK9.2)

I updated my Kernel to the latest and figured WTH, I'll update my Nvidia driver to the newest Version: 1.0-5328...

Well, I got exactly the same result as "aze", and my XF86Config-4 looked just like his. (no different than when it was the previous nvidia driver version)

I went back to Version: 1.0-4496 driver...and all is just fine and my video is back as before.

Seems to me when I tried using Version: 1.0-4363 the same thing happened.

I just upgraded from 4496 to 5328, and this is what I get:

$ glxgears
33 frames in 5.0 seconds =  6.600 FPS
35 frames in 5.0 seconds =  7.000 FPS
31 frames in 5.0 seconds =  6.200 FPS
12 frames in 5.0 seconds =  2.400 FPS
13 frames in 5.0 seconds =  2.600 FPS
12 frames in 5.0 seconds =  2.400 FPS
12 frames in 5.0 seconds =  2.400 FPS
12 frames in 5.0 seconds =  2.400 FPS
13 frames in 5.0 seconds =  2.600 FPS
11 frames in 6.0 seconds =  1.833 FPS
2 frames in 6.0 seconds =  0.333 FPS
2 frames in 6.0 seconds =  0.333 FPS
11 frames in 5.0 seconds =  2.200 FPS

When it goes to 2 frames per sec I made it fullscreen. HELLO? Well, I don't know, but I'm ready to downgrade...

In any case, first try with the 'nv' driver as Ix proposes to see if you get anything at all. IMHO there is nothing wrong with your XFconfig file, AFAICS anyway...
