  1. Yea, i was thinking that too, but i just wanted to ask if there's another solution for this.
  2. Hi. I'm getting my Mandriva LE2005 SSH server hammered. Every day people come and try different usernames and passwords if they can get into my box. Is it possible to automatically ban these attackers IP's? Like this: I connect to my server (thru SSH). I try to login as user jack (i have no user jack in my box) and try 3 different passwords and the system throws me out. I connect again. I try to login as user john (no john in my box) and try 3 passwords and so on... At this point, my SSH server thinks that this is an attack, and will ban my IP. Is this possible? The computer with Mandriva LE2005 doesn't have a monitor, mouse or keyboard. It will be used only thru SSH. I'm not in a hurry with this one because they will not get into my box (as i have only 5 users there and system default users). Thanks.
  3. And after this, when i've installed that wireless driver, do i have to build my kernel? Never done that before so i don't know how to do it.
  4. I opened Konsole and visited that place (as SU), there's nothing but a folder named "RPM". Is it hidden or something? Maybe i should try that driver installation with that directory. Thanks.
  5. I just started thinking that it might be MAC Address restriction problem there. I can use them at home (XP, 10.1 and LE2005) but not at school network. So let's consider this one as solved.
  6. Hi. I was installing a Wireless Network Adapter on my LE2005 and it recognises my card (at PCMCIA) but doesn't find any drivers for it. I try to manually load the driver, and the right driver is in the list, but when i choose it, it comes back and asks if i want to use the default driver or load it myself. I've got a driver pack for Linux from my wireless adapter manufacturer (A-Link) but in the readme file it says i have to do: I don't know what to put to that "/path/to/source". So i'm asking, where is my kernel. I'm just not a Linux expert.
  7. Thanks, this one solved my problem. I answered now because i had no time to test this because i screwed up my laptop and had to reinstall.
  8. Or if you're running KDE, there's always ctrl+ esc and /usr/bin/ksysguard that does the same.
  9. Hi. I was just wondering how i can shut down X (KDE) on my 10.1 and LE2005. I have a server running 10.1 and i don't need KDE running there eating resources as i can log into that machine with ssh. And can i start KDE again thru ssh when i need it? I think it is possible that way with startkde. I think killing X ain't the solution because i tested it on my laptop and it just freezes. :P This isn't an urgent one but any help would be appreciated. :) [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  10. My problem is solved now. I lowered my security level to high and sshd works perfectly. Thank you all who helped me. And it works on PuTTy with defaults. No configuring needed (not in PuTTy or on my server machine).
  11. My vote gos for 10.1 as it is the best one i've used (i had 9.2, 10.0 and 10.1). Still i'm not very happy using it. I have some problems on 10.1. Gotta update to 10.2 on my server machine as soon as i can.
  12. Thanks, this solved my problem. I didn't even know that they are different kernels listed there on lilo. :) But now my Laptop shuts down like it should when i choose that "Linux" option in lilo. Only bad thing here is that my machine starts slower now. On mdkenterprise it was like 1min, now it is like 2. But i think i can live with that. :) Thanks to you all who helped me out.
  13. Ok, my lilo.conf here: and i'm using apmd. acpid is not running.
  14. ok, here's my list: vmlinuz vmlinuz-enterprise vmlinuz-2.4.27-0.pre2.1mdk vmlinuz-2.4.27-0.pre2.1mdkenterprise vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-12mdk vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-12mdkenterprise there, i hope it helps...
  15. I had no acpi or acpid running there, just had them installed. But when i activated them (default configuration) and set them to start at boot, my laptop didn't start KDE anymore. Screen was just black and nothing happened. I disabled them and all works just fine again, except that shutdown thing. Maybe we consider this one solved and i just continue shutting it down manually?
  16. No, not Thinkpad. Toshiba Satellite 4300 Series. And uname -r says 2.6.8.1-12mdkenterprise. I'm sorry that i didn't mention my laptop before. But do i have any other option than changing the kernel? I'm not a professional with Linux and i think that kernel changing would be too hard for me. Maybe i continue shutting down my laptop manually if someone doesn't have any other solution for this.
  17. Hi. I have a problem with laptop shutdown. When i log out from KDE and when it asks if i want to shutdown or reboot, i choose shutdown. The system normally kills all processes and prepares to shutdown. But at the end i get this: Then the system just halts. All this remains there on the screen but nothing happens. I've already tried some things related to ACPI (read from these forums and thought it would be a solution for this but it isn't). What can i do? And where should i look for? This isn't so important as i can shutdown it manually (pressing the power button) but i think it isn't the way it is meant to be done.
  18. this is all what i get: I made it also as root. I have no idea what is wrong. I have my network connection configured and ready, i also unplugged one windows machine's cable and put my laptop (linux) cable there and configured ip and dns servers the same as the windows machine. But all i get is this. This isn't so important thing that someone should really start searching a solution for this, i just wanted to ask if someone had same problems than me and solved them.
  19. Hi. I was just wondering how i can make my MDK 10.1 to accept connections from two ip addresses. I saw it done on RedHat (Gnome) but i never found that option from MDK (KDE). I have already eth0, but need also eth1 on same network adapter. Let's say that i have eth0 (ip 10.0.0.1) already, but i want to listen also 10.0.0.2 (eth1). Is it possible? And what does KDE and Mandrake Control Center say about it if i make modifications to configuration files? Can it be done from Control Center? Not urgent one, but if someone could help i would appreciate it. Thanks.
  20. sorry, i didn't say that i wanted to login to that domain with my own domain username and pass and with my own Linux username. Let's say that i have username and pass to that domain like this: user: M pass: pass and Linux username: user: Murda pass: password my problem is that i can't login as "M" to a Windows domain thru samba as Linux user "Murda". I've tried almost all options (that have anything to do with my problem) from samba config. I just need an internet connection, i don't need to see any shares because i can handle them thru ftp in the network. Bad thing there is that all these windows machines are somehow restricted by admin. I have ftp server on my laptop running and static ip set. But still i can't connect to that laptop with ftp. So i need to be in that domain. I can access ftp servers outside the network (i have Mandrake Server running at home and i have full access thru ftp there). Tricky.. :(
  21. Hi. I've been searching tips on how to join to a win domain with my mdk 10.1 (laptop) but everywhere i look, there's only some talk about samba shares and samba as being domain server. I can't even get a internet access with my laptop. Let's say that i must connect to a domain called "domain" and i can see from windows configuration that there's a gateway computer at 10.1.0.254. It doesn't allow any traffic through if you are not in that domain (school network). Network uses Static ip addresses (no DHCP server online). I've been trying to configure samba through "Set your Desktop" (i use a translation from KDE so i don't know what it is in english) without any results. When i press that "Join a Domain" -button, it opens a window asking username and pass, but when i give them there and click ok, nothing happens. I'm completely out of ideas. Please help. And i'm not a great Linux expert but i still know something about networking.
  22. I've checked the log folder and there's no reports from sshd at all. Only proftpd says normal things like connection accepted and connection closed. But not a single line about ssh. The thing is that I can't even get any login dialog with PuTTY. It just closes the window. I got that error message with a program called "Zoc". I've totally ran out of ideas.
