  1. yes. As I said "I've downloaded the firmware from Henning's SANE page and used MCCto install it. (previously I created adirectory under /usr/shar/sane called gt68xx and copied the file there - this still exists)." I'm flummoxed.
  2. Further to this: I downloaded the update to init and now I've got a kooka device file on my desktop. Still the same problem though. Here's the weird bit: mandrake ONLY recognises there's a scanner there if I first boot into Windows and run the scanner software...... If I don't do that I get No scanner found. ???
  3. My Mustek 1200 UB + worked fine under 9.2 and as far as I know under 10 CE (though I'm not sure about that. I've downloaded the firmware from Henning's SANE page and used MCCto install it. (previously I created adirectory under /usr/shar/sane called gt68xx and copied the file there - this still exists). However when I do get a scanner recognized - it sees it as a Mustek Bear Paw 1200CU - I get the SANE window but no connection to the device. I just get the message "Failed to start scanner Device busy". Anyone any ideas?
  4. Sorry to hear :-( Good luck with Mandy.
  5. So, did that help? If it did, an acknowledgement would be nice.

    KDE vs. Gnome

I prefer the look of Gnome, but am I the only one who finds its file handling less handy/friendly than KDE's? One thing that swung the balance for me was that when copying files to a floppy, kfm will offer to overwrite any existing files. Gnome merely throws up a message saying there's not enough space on the floppy. There are other filemanagemnet niggles which I can't recall at the moment.
  7. Don't know why exactly but here's the solution: as root do xhost + localhost To make it permanent, make a script which runs xhost + localhost and put it in ~/.kde/Autostart A kind person in Mandrake Club told me this. Why localhost isn't already in the hosts list beats me.
  8. You're right, the bios didn't like the extended floppy. So I tried to make the iso image but failed at the end with the following: root@localhost//test # mkisofs -r -b 288boot.img bootcd.iso /home/fin/test mkisofs: No such file or directory. Invalid node - bootcd.iso Can you help, pmpatrick? Also, is it essential to remove the floppy directory after umounting it?
  9. I've followed this to the letter several times now, but although the floppy is properly formatted and MCC seems to create the boot floppy properly, when I boot with it, it loads boot.img, then v-e-ry slowly (and I mean incredibly slowly) starts loading vmlinuz. It spends several minutes doing this then without warning reboots the PC and starts all over again. I've never yet achieved a proper boot. Finlay

    Grub fatality

Yup, I used mcc I'll know better now.... I tried to restore the bootloader but got the message "fatal: vmlinuz not found" I didn't try to run lilo at the prompt. Scuse ignance: what's cli ?

    Grub fatality

I'm back to using Lilo. Having heard great things about Grub, I went into MCC and selected it as bootloader. When I rebooted and chose linux from the grub menu I got "fatal error - can't find vmlinuz" or similar. Being useless I couldn't figure out how to sort this from rescue. My 9.2 boot floppy doesn't work - yes I used superformat or whatever it's called, but it just ticks away for about five minutes "loading vmlinuz" than the machine reboots and it starts all over again. TCALSS I ended up reinstalling. I hate that. I would love to have a working boot floppy or CD. As I say I followed the advice in here, but the floppy is useless. Can anyone explain a) what happened and B) how to make that floppy, please? Finlay
  12. Just to be clear. It's not a problem with k3b, just the interesting way the devices are listed. aRtee seems to have provided the answer " /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part7 is not scsi, but plain ide. And has been for quite some time, /dev/hda7 was just a link, for backward compatibility and easier use." Never knew that. As I said in my original post "I realize it makes no difference to my system, it's only a matter of nomenclature --- or is it?" So it is. End of story. However, the display in kdiskfree seems to have unneccessary redundancy, no? And it's a bit of a shock for those of us who've been used to /dev/hda1 and so on (since 1996 in my case) to find everything listed differently! :o Many thanks for all your replies.
  13. Yes, I understand about the convention of device listings. ( I didn't remove my secondary master - simply removed the reference from my append line in lilo so that it wouldn't be seen as a scsi device.) AFAICS the emulation is on devices, not partitions i.e. they refer to the devices which are mounted on partitions. I'm glad it's been seen before, bvc - I'm not alone :D For interest, though I don't see how it can help, here's my fstab: /dev/hda7 / reiserfs notail 1 1 /dev/hda6 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hdb5 /extra ext2 defaults 1 2 /dev/hda8 /home reiserfs notail 1 2 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom iso9660 unhide,user,noauto,ro 0 0 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom2 iso9660 unhide,user,noauto,rw 0 0 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,user 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-15,umask=0 0 0 /dev/hdb2 /mnt/win_d vfat codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-15,umask=0,defaults 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda9 /usr reiserfs notail 1 2 /dev/hda10 /var reiserfs notail 1 2 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 Finlay
  14. I have always had the line "append hdd=ide-scsi" in lilo.conf to enable my cdwriter. My devices were listed as /dev/hda1 etc as usual. I then added "hdc=ide-scsi" to my append line in order to make my dvd drive recognized by K3B and to my amazement df now lists all devices as part of scsi chain, as in: /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part7 Kdiskfree shows the original (/dev/hda) type list followed by the scsi-type list. only the latter list has the graphic showing the amount of disk free. Can anyone explain this to me? I realize it makes no difference to my system, it's only a matter of nomenclature --- or is it? BTW I removed the hdc entry from append (and ran lilo of course) in an effort to get back to the original listing format - but no go. Still got the scsi-type listing. Please explain, someone! 15. Even the lowly Mustek 1200 UB Plus, £35 from Safeway, $45 from WalMart, works.
  16. Gosh! I didn't expect all that! Well it still says DPMS as the only option. Many thanks for the tip of the day. :) Finlay
  17. Gowator many thanks. Now what was the make of that £300 monitor? :D The only Xf86config Option for my radeon 7000 is DPMS (alas I've no idea what that means - well i know what it means but I don't know what it _means_ IYSWIM... The card comes with a DVI connector. I phoned LG by the way and they informed me that the "S" bit of the name of the monitor is nothing to do with S-video - it has a standard D connector and I think no DVI. Anyway it's all looking much more promising. I wonder if I'm making a fuss about nothing? Finlay
  18. JaseP, > When you have the S-video connector, things get more complicated. < now that's interesting.... Can you tell me what an S-video connector looks like please? Is that what is referred to when the monitor's part # ends in S e.g. the one I'm thinking of buying (mail order so I won't be able to look at the connector) is L1710S. Finlay
  19. James, thanks for pointing me to the database. Of course it was the first place I looked. But whatever the database says, there are plenty of users running hardware that is not listed there. They simply haven't informed Mandrake. Hence the reason for my asking people to list the monitors they're successfully running. For instance, the link to the hardware database seems to be broken this morning but I've a feeling that the monitors listed in the last two posts here aren't listed. So that's what I'm looking for. Finlay
  20. Thank you. That's just the kind of information I was looking for. :) What I need is , if the monitor doesn't work, I need to have a bunch of possible fixes I can try before just giving up and sending it back. Yours fits the bill. Ta, Finlay
  21. After you've inserted the CD open sond mixer(so that all the contrlols are showing - if you've a volume control on the panel right-click it). Grab the pcm buttons and move 'em. And probably the CD buttons. You should get sound. If you reboot it'll go away again though. It's a very annoying bug. Finlay
  22. Hi jghat! Many thanks for your reply. One more to work with! Finlay
  23. Well I've pretty much decided to go for an LG L1710s which ebuyer are offering at a good price. I'll keep my fingers crossed it works with my Radeon 7000. All those listed in the supported database are either too expensive or out of date. Many thanks to the THREE people who recommended their TFTs. (I wonder if this means very few Mdk users own TFTs or if [holy paranoia] there really is a problem with them?) Finlay
  24. Believe it or not, I got thrown by the version of XFDrake that gets thrown up in a terminal. Could I get that thing to work?... ..It is NOT intuitive. I expect when I've selected an option, to get alternatives I hit Return - not "Do". Please. Anyway, Please keep the TFTs coming. The more I know are working with 9.1 the happier I'll be. Finlay
