  1. thanks to all replies. i am just wary of giving the green light to install the RHEL because of the possibility of non-software components that might not be free for re-distribution. if the non-software components are indeed restricted for redistribution then that would imply that the actual means of acquiring the install media is already unlawful. i already tried the track wherein i told my friend that he can install RHEL but what about updates? i pointed out that he could probably use the update repositories of CentOS or WBEL but if that is the case then he should use them from the very start. i already did the 1:1 route and it didnt fly because my understanding was that the management insists on seeing the RHEL name plastered on the server. i also asked if they are gunning for some vendor support (e.g. oracle) and my friend said they do not. i am just an observer/sme in this whole shebang which makes it more perplexing since i know they could use the RHEL clones but i dont have the power nor the influence to get the point across. :( ciao!
  2. hi, a friend is being asked to install RHEL in one of their servers but they are not going to subscribe to the RH support services. he is asking me if he can legally install it since he already has a copy of the install media. i have already tried persuading him to install CentOS or WBEL but his management is insisting on RHEL. talk about management stubborness. :( anyway, can he still install it on their server without legal repercussions? thanks. ciao!
  3. Nope the last two numbers are to do with checking the disk at startup for errors and the other one I forget now. But try aioshins solution and see if that works. Just dawned on me it might be connecting using guest account without specifying. i think i remember one of them being the applied umask, anyway i have tried every suggestion and I still get the permission denied error. i just wish konqueror has the facility to allow me to mount the share from the GUI. :( ciao!
  4. thanks but gparted does not do compression of unused blocks. its copy method is similar to dd which means i have to allocate 40GB of space somewhere. that makes it unfeasible for my needs. ciao!
  5. still no dice. and isnt that one of the last two numbers in the mtab entry? ciao!
  6. unfortunately knoppix does not have mondo rescue. i was using knoppix+partimage to do the system backup for imaging but unfortunately knoppix does not want to play ball. :( ciao!
  7. hi, since the mondorescue cd is unavailable for quite a while, anybody knows of a good live cd that carries it? the smaller the better but if it comes in a 700MB iso image then i guess that is fine too. thanks. ciao!
  8. hi, i am currently unable to successfully mount a windows share inside knoppix. the mount command[1] itself seems to work fine, and there seems to be a correct entry in /etc/mtab. however i keep on getting the access denied error. i have just created the local mount point so i guess the problem is with the mount command. konqueror can access the share just fine when using the smb protocol. i need to have the share mounted since partimage needs to access it locally in order to write the images that i am creating out of the workstation. the frustrating thing is this went off flawlessly a couple of months ago. i cannot seem to find any error logs related to this problem. any tips is greatly appreciated. thanks. [1] mount -t smbfs -o username=myuser //10.190.32.7/share ~/tmp/local [2] //10.190.32.7/share /ramdisk/home/knoppix/tmp/local smbfs 0 0 ciao!
  9. what's wrong with floppies? I still use them on occasion for little tasks such as this ;) choose one of these words: corruption , fragile or this phrase: "disk not formatted, would you like to format it now?" i had a friend who weeped once because his thesis was in a floppy and they (yes he has another floppy just in case... ) became unreadable during submission time. and he lives two hours away. this was a couple of years ago when floppy were still 'in' and cd burners were at a premium. nowadays, there is just no reason to stick with floppies if you have at least 1 burner in your machines. and no, experiencing the bad sector high is not a valid reason. nor is the gratification of hearing the drive formatting the disk for the umpteenth time. [edit] i realized that someboy might put forward the old hardware argument but that is a different tangent of this discussion. i am assuming that we are all talking about hardware that could boot off the optical drive. :) ciao!
  10. yes, most of those wipers work on the installed hard drives. in the case of dban, you just boot the machine with it and you get a prompt wherein you can choose between 4 (i think) wiping options, from quick to the DoD compliant scheme. dban fits on a floppy but since nobody in their right minds uses floppy these days i use the cd iso. ciao!
  11. In that case he needs to install the Xtart package since that will give him the choice of which WM/DM to run and handle the gritty X stuff. I have been using it since 8.0/8.1. ciao!
  12. for wiping workstations before i return them to the company pool i just use dban. i dont use the DoD-compliant method since writing 0's already take about 25 minutes. and the workstations are going to be ghosted anyway when they get redistributed to other projects. :) ciao!
  13. does that make it legal now that microsoft has ended support for win98? maybe they can start putting linux on those boxes to make them legal and at the same time advocate linux? i know it is a long shot especially since the boxes are of different configuration, but... ciao!
  14. devries i think you are not on the same page as ffi. hotpopper is a windows application (if i understand it correctly). if it works like yahoopops, it reads the webmail interface of hotmail and brings up a pseudo smtp/pop3 server in the workstation to serve as an abstraction layer so that normal mail clients can use it to get and receive mail. i would gather that the smtp/pop3 settings of hotpopper points to localhost so it would be moot to get those since they do not yet exist when ffi boots in linux (at least if the ports specified are not reserved for common applications). :) ffi, please feel free to correct me if i am the one who misunderstoods. ciao!
  15. yep, last i heard the gameguard was the one that causes the game from completely running. if only ragnarok users will ask the developer to release a linux client then they wouldn't have to go through the hoops of emulation. but its the perennial chicken or egg problem. :( ciao!
  16. can you post the contents of your $/.bashrc and $/.bash_profile? i am wondering if they reference the /etc/bashrc. ciao!
  17. it just part of the viscious it news circle. it doesnt matter if google denies plans of making one since they have done the same for the instant messaging application. if they find it to their advantage to launch their own linux distro then all is well as it is their prerogative. ciao!
  18. does this caveat that is mentioned in our MD5 FAQ apply? ciao!
  19. it failed because i frequent it? ciao!
  20. This FAQ entry should still suffice to a certain degree assuming that you are not planning to reinstall windows. ciao!
  21. it depends on your comfort zone. if you really want to cloak your machine then try playing with iptables to automatically drop ping requests to your machine. you could also try using tools like gShield or IPkungfu to do the configuration and just learn the iptable stuff details later. ciao!
  22. i dont think that is an issue even if it is marked as an executable since the only content is a single character (0 or 1). that will only be an issue if somebody cracks your machine and gets enough permission to write to that file, add some warm and fuzzy cracks and execute it. and if im not mistaken /proc is a virtual filesystem. a reboot should reset it to the right permissions. ciao!
  23. only regional yahoo accounts have free pop3 access. the ones created on the main site are blocked. unless they are encouraging people to sign-up on the regional servers then their practice is a little bit looney. ciao!

    help please

if i understand/decoded it correctly bluesea is asking for a place where to download the ui shared object. there are no hits in rpm.pbone.net so it might be helpful for bluesea to give more information like name of the game he is trying to run. i think the shared object might be specific to that game, or this might be a wine issue. ciao!
  25. quick, create a new category for ix. i cant pin the correct word for it but its synanymous to memory loss due to old age. ciao!
