  1. Nothing is odd when the desire to make money is present. :#: ciao!
  2. maybe the source but not the binary. ciao!
  3. go for deb. but consider that the advice comes from a person who has been putting off his slackware installation for almost a year now. :#: ciao!
  4. Just curious. What kind of business is it? an internet cafe 'sells' internet access for those who doesnt own a pc/phone at their home. its very popular in manila that you could almost find one in every block in most places. in hotspots like university belts you would find them side-by-side but those are mostly gaming stations than internet cafes. ciao!
  5. thats not a problem. most of us have dual-boot machines and still get to post most of the time here. does your wife use the computer 100% of the time? :) ciao!
  6. make that # lilo -v so you get a verbose display of whats happening (useful if you type something wrong). ciao!
  7. i dont know anything about businesses but what exact features of RH/MDK will warrant it 'irreplaceable' by another linux distro? i think i have a pretty good idea but i would love to hear your side. ciao!
  8. ral, but why the path of RH-Mandrake-Windows? doesnt any other distro give you the support that you would need? sidenote to ral: how much does the powerpack at datablitz cost? i am saving some money for 9.1 if it does make it in manila. ciao!
  9. omar is right on this one. puttin git on your .bashrc will cause startx to be run everytime you execute a shell. .bash_profile is the file you want. :) ciao!
  10. yes, this would have been nifty during those days when i was complaining about being booted out everytime i post something. :) too bad i cant press refresh on the resulting page like on the search page without getting a warning about post data. but then, you cant have everything in life. :#: ciao!
  11. Im betting you dont live with a bigger brother whose primary use of a computer is as a gaming machine. :? ciao!
  12. i remember partimage having an option to not have it backup the MBR (or to disable it if its the default option. all i know is that i chose to go to the dont touch the MBR bit because i do the reinstallation of windows from linux as it only takes me 5 minutes. :#: ciao!
  13. Have a look at Netcraft.com. There are a lot of servers that have been up for over 3 or 4 years straight. Here's a link:http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/today/top.avg.html thanks for the link scape but i will clarify my previous question. does somebody from the board gunning for such a statistic? ciao!
  14. hahaha, i was referring to the restarting bit. :#: but at least the execution is not the same. :) ciao!
  15. i dont really understand it all either. all i know is that a very techno-geekette at the local linux mailing list is doing it and she encouraged me to do the same because i keep on reinstalling win9x frequently to satisfy my brother (before i posted my reinstall in 5 minutes with partimage tip ) and thus have to hunt for the installation discs to restore lilo. all i understand is that when you specify another partition as the boot partition it sticks. lets see if somebody with more knowledge reinforces/refutes it. ciao!
  16. redturtle might be aiming for the setup wherein you can reinstall windows to your heartscontent and it wont be able to erase your bootloader because its not placed in the MBR. i tried doing that and failed miserably. :( but when i did that i placed in the /boot partition that i reserved just in case i would want to triple-boot. ciao!
  17. you should have the additional item in lilo even if it doesnt work. unless you didnt run lilo after saving the changes. try running it with -v to get an idea if something is wrong right off the bat. # lilo -v ciao!
  18. doing some quick math, that translates to 53.56 minutes downtime per year (unless i goofed in the multiplication). Anybody gunning for that kind of uptime? ciao!
  19. hmmn. this is getting scary. KDE is behaving more like windows everyday. :#: ciao!
  20. i have not used kde for a long time but you could have just rightclicked on a desktop, create a shortcut, enter the target app/script and then just check the show terminal checkbox or something. same effect but the xterm route is faster if you are familiar with cli. :#: ciao!
  21. after re-reading your original posts, you might only have to do everything in fstab. comment out the lines corresponding to your windows partitions, save the changes and run # mount -a . ciao!
  22. to disable supermount, pass the parameters 'nomount' to lilo before booting. this is just from memory so somebody might correct it later (or post an equivalent for grub). - during the lilo screen, press escape. you should get a prompt like this lilo: - assuming you use the option labeled 'linux' to boot your linux system, enter on the prompt linux nomount (or was it linux append=nomount?). your system should then boot without supermount. you can automate this by editing your /etc/lilo.conf, copying the 'linux' stanza and renaming the pasted copy to something else (like 'linux-nomounnt') and then adding the 'nomount' option in the append line of the new stanza. save the changes and run # lilo -v to have the changes be reflected (assuming there is no error in your new stanza) in the lilo menu options. as for your mounting directories, you have to do it through the /etc/fstab. search for fstab and mount here in the board for threads which discusses the topics further. ciao!
  23. i think im the only one who cannot access xpde.com. :( ill just try later. forego konsole and use aterm instead. its leaner and eats less resources than most terminals but almost have the same features as the best of them. you dont have the multiple terminals in a window (you can simulate that if you are using fluxbox :#:) though. enough hijacking this thread. ciao!
  24. would someone care to explain this further? how do you use a swap when power is down? thanks! ciao!
