    Lots of posts about this. KFind hangs anytime all the time, not just when starting search from /. Yes can use CL, but a couple of users prefer the GUI. Also someone recommended copying the kfind files from a debian distro, but I don't have access to that. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Could this be a problem?   3. The above are excellent choices. If price is an issue, the flatbed Microtek C6 USB is outdated but will be picked up automatically by MDK 10.0 and up and can be had( used )for $5 to $15 US

    Spoke too soon about tux on VIA 800 PC. Have tried all different monitor and resolution settings but no luck - still jerky. Works OK on Plll PC. MCC does not have the SiS 325 2D/3D accelerator integrated card (in the VIA PC)in its monitor vendor list but has many other SiS cards; am trying different ones. Could this be the problem and if so, how difficult to find and load updated drivers? Also, frozen-bubble is on menu but won't load and does not show up on package install list, but when I open CD and find frozen-bubble rpm, then install it, says everything already loaded. Any ideas? kids getting ready to mutiny Thanks

    OK.....kids mad. PC with VIA 800mhz CPU. Kids wanted tuxracer, so put it on, but would run slow, jerky, delayed response; heard about these VIA chips being no good for gaming so...........put MDK 10.0 w/tuxracer on Intel Pllll 600mhz and presto.........tuxracer was fine. For unrelated reasons had to reload MDK 10.0 onto different HD, BUT IN SAME Intel Plll 600mhz PC. Now tuxracer seems to be eating up system resources and is running slow and jerky like in the VIA PC which leads me to believe it is NOT the VIA chip causing problem. All other arcade games on both PCs are fine. It's NOT the VIA chip.........yup ......monitor settings..........go ahead and yell Thanks [topics merged by spinynorman]

    Free DSL?

    New from dialup........that's why the question. I thought DSL signal was pumped out "de facto' over the lines. So you're saying if I go to a home where there is no DSL account, then there will be no digital signal present, regardless of passwords, accounts, etc.? BTW I think you helped me get my internal PCI dialup modem working about 4 mos. ago Thanks

    Free DSL?

    NEW to DSL on Wxp box, but have noticed that am able to connect on MDK 10.0 box using the LAN connection to DSL modem with no names, passwords, etc. I don't know enough about how DSL works other than that it "rides" on top of the analogue signal for phone service. If this signal is always on, AND I am able to connect thru the LAN to DSL modem in Linux, why am I paying for monthly service? Thanks for any info
  8. have searched ....plenty of dual boot info, but only found 1 thread similar but no answer. I guess I should know this but....... 1. Plll with Wxp on hda 2. added second HD (hdb) and MDK10.0 loaded fine onto it. I was expecting to be given option during install for LILO bootloader, but it was put on hda Wxp by default, which is OK. 3. Now.... fairly certain Wxp is infected with nasty virus and would like to eliminate xp completely but can't at this time. Need to reinstall Wxp in same place (hda) but this will wipe out LILO boot loader and leave the hdb useless until I do. There are no important files on hdb at this time. Since I was not given the choice where to install LILO during installation, am wondering how to get it back onto hda after reloading Wxp. Any instructions out there? :unsure: Thanks
  9. Take AussieJohns advice. PCI modems and even winmodems can be made to work under linux, but it is BRUTAL! ........especially if you are new. ( I have done both) I agree about external serial hdwr modems, but why wait for ebay? External serial port modems (try to steer clear of USB modems) can be found at your local thrift shop for less than $10. ( I bought mine for the kids PCs at $2 each). They require no drivers and generally have faster data transfer speed than many internal PCI modems. Post here for help on setting these up. There is lots of help in these forums good luck!

    Dual boot Wxp and MDK 10.0 on Plll with onboard USB v1.1 . Lexar USB jumpdrive works fine in XP but locks up PC in MDK 10.0. This jumpdrive works OK with MDK 10.0 on different PC USB controller on-board is Intel 810 chipset with UHCI controller. I thought linux 2.6.x used USB 2.0 which should be compatible with v1.1. I checked BIOS settings, there don't seem to be any related to this problem. Any ideas? Thanks
  12. OOps......sorry, I am using 10.1 OFFICIAL. All the more reason these issues should be resolved. I confirmed today that Koffice and Mozilla ARE in 10.0 packages list but not 10.1. I hope Mandriva is not pulling the old bait and switch. Please explain how to apply updates. Can these be done on dialup? (no DSL here). I notice 2005 LE is listed with 10.1 on dwnloads, but someone has referred to 10.2. Please explain Thanks
  13. Point taken, and not here to bash MDK. I have transferred about 80% of all my PC usage to linux and will continue to move towards Mandriva and later, Slackware. But, you must admit that there is a reasonable expectation that if the community edition had apps that worked in 10.0, then, a later version, installed on the exact same hardware would be expected to progress and not regress. I would say that Konqueror not opening is a major booboo. Yes it's possible that I did something in the install to mess up one or two things, but to have all that I listed not available or working is more than coincidence.   14. OK, Using 10.0 community for 6 mos. ....everything good. Did research on 10.1-decided to try it. Maybe it's me but.. tried it on EXACT SAME PC... except this time dual boot with Wxp. Used LILO to practice custom partition on Wxp NTFS vol. I divided 20gb HD into 6gb NTFS for Wxp, 6gb FAT 32 for sharing and the rest for MDK 10.1 and install went well except for: 1. login was text based - well OK... so tried KDE as user and as root ..no luck KDE would not start....problem in Xorg.conf could not figure problem (resolution depth not supported).............reinstalled - again OK this time KDE fired up 2.Konqueror won't start from GUI or terminal 3. Doesn't have gedit or pico. I don't know the other text editors. 4. Can't find Koffice in RPM packages 5. Openoffice1.1.3 takes way longer to load than 1.1 6. MDK 10.0 found my digital cam and USB disk no problem. 10.1 found neither. The fstab and mtab of 10.0 had supermount and desktop icons ready to go, but not 10.1. This is just the stuff I found missing or not working in about 30 min of looking around. This is NOT a good start for 10.1 Am I missing something? This is why I am trying to get away from MS. I don't want a """BETTER""" OS, I want one that works. Any thoughts or help?
  15. Went to logon to 'net yesterday and (Kppp) modem dialed - but no connect.............. hmmm........what's changed. Oh, I reformatted PC 2 HD in my two PC network (LAN using crossover), and therefore no LAN connection exists. Question....why would Kppp care if that LAN connection no longer exists? And..... why did I have to comment out the first line in my resolv.conf for the connection to work. I received a "pppdaemon died" error message if not. I thought that this file only affected browsers. If Kppp uses this file, wouldn't it just move on to the nameservers once it couldn't find "home" ? OK.....removed gateway used rm -r to remove the ifcfg-eth0 directory I created used your touch and chmod commands to create a new ifcfg-eth0 file (not directory) can now file share usinf sftp: in Konqueror Am posting thru my browser...........so I guess I'm back on track and better off than before! Keep fingers crossed that this holds up......... On to internet sharing and SAMBA............   17. NEW to networking but have now invested 2 months and not getting anywhere. Running two MDK 10.0 PCs w/crossover cable. PC 1 is the connection to internet via dialup modem. I did not use MCC to configure the modem connection to internet......used Kppp. I DID use MCC to configure the LAN connection between PC1 and PC2. PC1 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 name mybox1.home gateway 192.168.0.1 PC2 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0 name mybox2.home gateway 192.168.0.1 I have every gigantic networking tutorial .pdf on my desktop.....NFS,SMB, SSH. I have used sftp in konqueror successfully to share files between PC1 and PC2, except...... that when I used MCC to configure the LAN connections, it messes with the resolv.conf file and my browsers don't work. So I delete the LAN connection on PC1 in MCC, then I delete the contents of the resolv.conf file and browsing is back to normal, but of course.....no file sharing. I have posted about this before and have received notice that the MCC is buggy when setting up networking and have read this on the FAQs on this forum. Now some new problem after messing with PC1: PC2 is able to ping itself, but not PC1 (destination host unreacheable) PC 1 returns with [name@mybox1 user]$ ping 192.168.0.1 PING 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data. --- 192.168.0.1 ping statistics --- 7 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 5998ms I noticed that /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 on PC 2 is in green and did not exist in PC1 so I created it, but of course it is a now a directory (in blue). What is the significance if this file being in green on PC2 and non existent (but newly created as a directory)in PC1? Have received some help on these forums, but it is just not working out.   18. I have been buying external serial hdwr modems ( not USB--they are usually sftwr modems) for $1 to $3 at the local thrift store. As mentioned previously, they work great with linux, require no drivers, and are faster and require less configuration than many internal PCI modems ( which require drivers whether or not they are sftwr or hdwr modems). Only hassle is sometimes you have to match up an AC power adapter for them which takes about 5 min. digging thru a pile. If you want a cheap internal hdwr PCI modem - google for the AMIGO AMI IA56 with Intel 536ep chipset - about $15......drivers that come with are for 2.4.x kernel. If you are using 2.6.x kernel you will have to dwnld from Intel site. Be prepared to spend some time on this. good luck
  19. Agreed......... DSL thru LAN/NIC is easy and quick- For dialup -external serial hdwr modem (not USB---they are usually winmodems) is next best----no drivers. Hook 'em up and configure in Kppp. (look online ( $15 )or in thrift stores ($1-5)) Any internal PCI modem that I know of whether hdwr or sftwr will require drivers. (google for the AMIGO AMI IA56 int ernal PCI modem w/ Intel ep536 chipset) Takes longer..more work. The actual install is pretty easy......getting there is not. you have to ... 1. match correct drivers to correct kernel no. and/or look for them 2. make sure you have kernel sources installed 3. follow install procedure which is about 5 or 6 steps sounds easy, but if you're new, it can take quite awhile Whichever you do, get help in a forum..........tutorials are too general for newbs good luck
  20. Using MDK 10.0+ microtek slimscan C6 on LP port. Microtek slimscan C6 is listed in the MCC hdwr setup as supported, but have tried several "select device" settings with no luck, it keeps reporting no scanners detected on this system. Have a USB model of this scanner that is detected and works fine. Is it possible that mdk is expecting a printer on the port? How can I configure the lp0 on PC to be available for use with the scanner which has connections to go between the PC and the printer. (using parallel port on PC to port A on scanner.which then has another connector labelled "to printer". Any ideas? Thanks

PC1 is hooked to PC2 w/crossover and configured and addressed as 192.168.0.1in MCC new LAN connection, and also hooked to internet via serial ext. modem configured thru Kppp. I did not setup the modem thru MCC new connection wizard. PC2 is hooked to PC1 via LAN setup thru MCC new LAN connection and addressed as 192.168.0.2. Both PCs running MDK 10.0 I must be entering the wrong info into the wizard. I don't know what to enter in DCHP, DNS1,2,3, Zeroconf host, hostname, so I leave them blank. Maybe that's the problem. Here is route command after deleting LAN connection on PC1. I don't want to setup LAN on PC1 again until I have access to another PC because I won't be able to post.   22. 2 PCs both running MDK 10.0 connected via cat 5 crossover with 1 PC connected to internet via ext serial dialup modem. At this point I am NOT trying to get internet sharing working. I have all the networking "bibles" in PDF format on my desktop including NFS and Samba. I posted on several forums about 1 month ago that I just wanted to "see" the files on the other PC. I indicated that I would learn all the intricate stuff later, but for now, just something simple. I had been able to ping each PC. Well...........received bargeloads of information on CL stuff.....no luck, until someone said simply to type sftp://192.168.0.1 into Konqueror or terminal. Works, (am able to see konqueror files both ways), but here's problem....... After doing so, I close konqueror (I'm done with "sharing files) then connect to net with Kppp, but my browsers don't work. My resolv.conf file gets messed with and have to do this to fix it: gedit resolv.conf and delete any entries (I think sftp adds the other PC's address to the file) remove the eth0 connection then browsers are OK. Any ideas what is going on and how to fix? PS: need to get a small network up and running 1. Does Mandrake have any decent documentation for using any of its GUI networking tools? I have poked around NFS and Samba but have no idea how to "invoke" them like I did the sftp 2. Does any one know if the MCC GUI tools work? 3. I guess the sftp thing is called ssh? Is NFS or Samba better? 4. What would best serve a small office network? thanks for any help
  23. OK. There is an fd0@ (I think it's a link) in the /dev directory and all the entries in /dev are identical to those in another PC also running MDK 10 in which the floppy device is working fine. I have copied the fstab and mtab entries to imitate what is in those files on the "working" PC........still no go. [root@192 etc]# cat fstab /dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=auto,ro,exec,--,umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 and when I try to mount from terminal I get this... [root@192 etc]# mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy mount: you must specify the filesystem type doesn't the entry ,fs=ext2:vfat, take care of this? Now the drive seems to engage and I get the drive LED but still no files viewable on a floppy disk I know to contain files Thanks

In MCC, devfs is running at startup I do not find a udev daemon now for some reason am receiving this error upon trying to mount the floppy only root can mount /dev/fd0 on /mnt/fd0 I thought I had changed permissions but maybe not. If I mount from term I get. [root@192 root]# mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/fd0 /dev/fd0: No such file or directory mount: you must specify the filesystem type [root@192 root]# mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy /dev/fd0: No such file or directory mount: you must specify the filesystem type I'm fairly certain I never had to specify file type before, unless the file sys type is not specified in the fstab. In MCC it is set at auto. Thanks for any help
  25. OK.....tried your suggestion.....no go. Also. fired up the kids' PC also with MDK 10. Floppy working fine in it. Copied that fstab onto this PC....no luck.. On bad PC the drive doesn't even appear to engage(no drive led, but a window opens with nothing in it even tho I know files are on the disk) By the way in /mnt there are both floppy/ and fd0/ , in addition to cdrom/, whereas on the working PC, there is only floppy/ and cdrom/ Could this be causing confusion? thanks
