  1. Am not familiar with Brother in linux environment, but can tell you they are not high on the compatibility list. Linux does support Brother and dozens of other brands, but it may be spotty. If you check linuxprinting site you will see that HP and Epson rank high, and almost every Samsung product comes with linux drivers included on the CD. Some Canon and Lexmarks are also supported. Try the drivers for the MFC 8300 Either go to start>System>config your comp>hardware>printers and let it autodetect. Whatever it detects, uncheck auto and install manually from the list that will populate. (Select vendor on the left and model on the right) OR Go to start>system>config>KDE>peripherals>printing and go thru wizard. Select MFC 8300 Wish I could be of more help, but I cheat and check the specific compatibilty of printers with my distro (Mandrake 10.0) and never have had to load drivers for my printers. Another reason for using SPECIFICALLY supported printers, is not only the problem of finding drivers, but doing the CONFIGURATION (manually) for the driver once it's installed. I have installed drivers for modems, tho, and the actual install is fairly easy, but finding correct drivers and configuration afterward can be very time consuming. Check out --> www.linuxprinting.org good luck
  2. Almost all drivers come with installation instructions in a readme file. Check the downloaded unzipped package for more info or go back to the Brother site and look for help. Also....Google can be your friend and search this forum for more info. good luck
  3. noticed all three USB modules werel oaded on the MDK 10 PC where both pendrives were recognized, but on the 2005LE PC only uhci was loaded, so tried to load all 3 mods, (BTW, why is configuration done in modprobe.conf?).... no luck Then set BIOS PnP to yes and viola! But still, why did it recognize the Jetway and not the Lexar when PnP set to 'no'? Hmmmm.........
  4. Am assuming this is an internal PCI modem for dial up? I have installed both winmodems AND linux compatible internal PCI modems, and can tell you - both require drivers and installation of these drivers is likely to make you sit PLUNK DOWN, start rocking gently back and forth and begin picking aimlessly at little twigs of grass. Resist the urge to go internal.....why? installing drivers could take 2 hours OR.........2 weeks or more. Why torture yourself when there are external serial port modems? 1. ext ser port modems require NO DRIVERS 2. these modems are generally faster than many int PCI modems 3. Google for Actiontech, USRobotics, or Best DATA 4. If money is an issue, they can be had used on ebay or at local thrift shops for $3. 5. Always make sure your ISP is linux friendly good luck B)
  5. Thanks for the tips guys, am slowly figuring this out although in my defense have to say some procedures are not intuitive for me........maybe for others. Forgot to add.......I cannot find Koffice anywhere. Not in rpmdrake addpackages or even if I look manually on the discs. Where am I going wrong? Thanks

    MDV 2005LE

New to 2005LE from MDK 10. now trying 2005LE and cannot get it to recognize lexar pendrive( nothing in fstab, dmesg, lsmod, grep). It will recognize jetway pendrive. MDK 10 sees both. Also, destroyed KDE with menu editor immediately after install several days ago. Google confirms problems with this. Also cannot find Koffice anywhere in software mgr OR manually looking thru discs! Anyway, no problems with printers in MDK 10. Here was my experience with 2005LE this evening. Hookup my Canon BJ100 ( works fine in MDK 10) MCC>hdwr>printers>no printer autodetected Config>KDE>peripherals>printers> could not connect to serrver. Spend 10 minutes trying to configure CUPs, Passwords, etc......... For a noob there is no message indicating why cannot connect to CUPS Previous experience with MDK is CUPS is always installed so don't pursue this Go back to MCC - try to auto detect - no luck Back to KDE printer config - no go Finally out of curiosity go to system services - I don't see CUPS Being noob, don't know if CUPS SHOULD be there or not Just in case, restart and look for CUPS in startup dialogue - nothing back to MCC to check for software installed CUPS is in the installable menu, which might or might not mean it's already installed Go to installed and removeable menu - CUPS not there, so go back to installable Yes, CUPS is there, which I have now deduced means that CUPS was never installed THis is very vague and confusing for noobs There are 4-6 CUPS packages with NO indication for a noob which to use Try to install CUPS - bad packages, bad signatures Try installing every combo of CUPS - no luck ONLY BY RANDOM LUCK do I remember something about having used MDV update yesterday and maybe the CUPS packages are interfering with each other cause this happened about 2 weeks ago (destroyed the OS with dozens of perl packages from 2 different Dansguardian pckgs comingled) Also, by sheer luck remembered something about unchecking the package sources in software mgr if you DON"T want it to read from that selection. THIS IS ALSO VERY NON INTUITIVE FOR ME Unchecked the 'media' repository back to install CUPS - this time worked back to MCC>hdwr>printers - no printer detected Did this three times, checked cables Just on a lark, UNCHECKED the auto detect printer - viola! BJ100 working This was done in MDK 10 in 43 seconds (checked my log) What I have just related took 2 hours of my time. 1. Should EASY URPMI or Mandrivaonline install upgrade packages that conflict with what's on CDs? 2. How would a noob know this? 3. Shouldn't CUPS be installed during install as it was in MDK 10? 4. Are these reportable bugs? Anyone else had these experiences? Unfotunately am not impressed with 2005LE so far (this is official version) Came this --> || <-- close to removing it today, but will continue for the weekend. Thanks
  7. Sorry about the n00b questions, but.... Have MDV 2005LE PC. used MCC>updates OK Have two MDK 10.0 PCs. Went to MCC>updates: error message - could not find suitable mirrors due to processor architcture not supported. This was message even tho one PC has Plll coppermine like the 2005LE PC. So I assume it has to do with MDK 10 Anyway.......googled and found easy urpmi and followed instructions and here is console output: [root@localhost ****]# urpmi.addmedia main ftp://mandrake.contactel.cz/Mandrakelinux.../Mandrake/RPMS/ with../base/hdlist.cz added medium main examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.Installation CD 1 (x86) (cdrom1).cz] examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.Installation CD 2 (x86) (cdrom2).cz] examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.Installation CD 3 (x86) (cdrom3).cz] examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.Installation CD 4 (x86) (cdrom4).cz] computing md5sum of existing source hdlist (or synthesis) retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "main"... ftp://mandrake.contactel.cz/Mandrakelinux.../base/hdlist.cz found probed hdlist (or synthesis) as ../base/hdlist.cz ...retrieving done examining hdlist file [/var/cache/urpmi/partial/hdlist.main.cz] examining pubkey file of "main"... ...imported key 70771ff3 from pubkey file of "main" performing second pass to compute dependencies examining hdlist file [/var/lib/urpmi/hdlist.Installation CD 1 (x86) (cdrom1).cz] built hdlist synthesis file for medium "Installation CD 1 (x86) (cdrom1)" examining hdlist file [/var/lib/urpmi/hdlist.Installation CD 2 (x86) (cdrom2).cz] built hdlist synthesis file for medium "Installation CD 2 (x86) (cdrom2)" examining hdlist file [/var/lib/urpmi/hdlist.Installation CD 3 (x86) (cdrom3).cz] built hdlist synthesis file for medium "Installation CD 3 (x86) (cdrom3)" examining hdlist file [/var/lib/urpmi/hdlist.Installation CD 4 (x86) (cdrom4).cz] built hdlist synthesis file for medium "Installation CD 4 (x86) (cdrom4)" examining hdlist file [/var/lib/urpmi/hdlist.main.cz] built hdlist synthesis file for medium "main" found 0 headers in cache removing 0 obsolete headers in cache write config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg] ....and that was it. So did this update anything? Next day stumbled across Mandrivaonline site and followed procedure . This time update DOES work from within MCC>updates, so downloaded and installed bugfixes and normal updates and received "packages installed OK" message. So questions are: 1. Did easy urpmi do anything? 2. Did I do any damage by doing update from two different methods? 3. Were these updates stored on my HD and where are they, or is there a way to do so in order to burn them to disk so I can have them for future use? I have heard Mandriva is not going to support 10.0 anymore. Thanks for any help.
  8. Can't advise about laptops, but yes, for desktop dialup, external serial port modems are the way to go. I have installed nonlinux AND linux compatible internal PCI modems and it is doable but painful. The actual installation of drivers is easy. Rounding up everything you need, eg. drivers, kernel source, information, can take weeks. 1. Check that your ISP plays nice with linux 2. Google for BestData or US Robotics external serial port modem (not USB, they are usually winmodems) 3. If money is an issue, go to ebay or your local thriftshop. I buy them $5 or less (sometimes have to find AC adapter). ck to make sure it is 56k. 34 k modems are fine. Stay away fron anything less than 34k good luck!
  9. Read FAQs, tips n tricks, checked usb.org, but nothing quite like this. Using 2005LE with KDE plugin a Jetway 128 USB 2.0 pendrive and MDV 2005LE puts an icon and automounts. Here's the fstab: /dev/sda1 /mnt/USB_DISK vfat pamconsole,exec,noauto,noatime,sync,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,managed 0 0 If I plugin a Lexar 128 USB 2.0 ....nothing no icon no auto no fstab Pretty sure they are both formatted vfat Just walked over to my MDK 10.0PC and they are both detected there. Here's the fstab of the Lexar in MDK 10 none /mnt/removable supermount dev=/dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/part1,fs=ex t2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,kudzu,codepage=850 0 0 Here's the Jetway in MDK 10 none /mnt/removable supermount dev=/dev/scsi/host3/bus0/target0/lun0/part1,fs=ex t2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,kudzu,codepage=850 0 0 I guess it's something to do with MDK10.0 viewing as a scsi device? Any idea what's up? Also in 2005LE a right click gives umount option, but in 10.0 its just open or properties, and I have just unplugged with no problems. Should I be unmounting in 2005LE? Thanks for any help

    MDV 2005

Thanks to all of you for the tips. Am trying to migrate everything off my Wxp partition, so am not spending as much time as I should learning about X configuration and the like. So far have found OL2KDE for data transfer from Outlook and am hoping Gimp, xsane, or Kooka will replace paperport which I really use a lot. Thanks again
  11. Probably the single most common issue I have had with linux of any distro is mysteriously vanishing GUI and/or login . I will install , then 2 or 3 months pass, then tinker with an update or try to change a look'n feel in KDE, or add a user, then all of a sudden, I have lost GUI completely and/or the login goes to a graphical root or login has changed. Personally this has plagued me throughout several distros, and is probably due to my tinkering. Since I generally backup my /home folder it has been easier to reload OS, but sometimes the KDE config files get screwed up and reinstalling OS does NOT help. Tried using boot floppy, but I think it's reserved for instances where you cannot boot into the system. I can boot, just not into GUI Anyway, what would be the most important system and / or KDE configuration files to back up and generally where are they found? I guess they are in different places in different distros. If someone could point me to a tutorial , please thanks

    Update MDK 10.0

Were there patches/upgrades for MDK 10.0 Official and if so, where can I get, save and burn them to disk for later use after the support is gone? And....am I able to separate out what I want, if possible? Thanks

    MDV 2005

CDs I have are purchased thru third party vendor and labeled 2005 LE. What is best way to check to make sure they didn't slip me community version? What is the outlook for 2006 and should I just wait for it? Also, curiosity got me to reload 2005, keeping my home partition, and the menus were still screwed up which tells me there is a KDE file somewhere on my /home partition that is altered. Where can I locate it? Thanks for all your help

    Update MDK 10.0

Well CD says Official but these are purchased thru third party vendor...how to best check? Thanks
  15. This may be a hdwr issue, but.... MDK 10.0 has been very good, but want to make sure I'm up to date. Have read some posts and FAQ in this forum but they seem to focus on updating /adding packages. I would like to d/load patches and security updates. Went to mcc, opened update mgr. Cannot locate mirrors according to error mssg because processor architecture not supported. (using VIA C3 and have dwnloaded other Mandrake stuff from mirrors) It says I may try to enter manually, but: 1. where and how is the best place to do that. 2. How can I check the processor architecture? (pretty sure it's 586 or 686) (went to mcc>hdw> but does not give i386,i486, etc. Thanks...
  16. fairly confused about editing context menus in Konqueror. I think it is in the Config menus, but the dialogue boxes are vague. Knew this would happen.....while trying to edit Konqueror context menu, I lost my main start menu, and if I right click on start, the menu editor appears but won't launch. Also cannot even open simple text files....doesnt know how to associate files. I can't get to the file associations. For some reason, the documentation for Kmenu editor was not loaded during installation and there is no Kman entry in 'man' pages Help! Thanks

Thanks for reply.Yes inittab shows runlevel 5 as default. Must have altered something mcc that was not saved until reboot. I have my GUI logon and logoff back. I did learn something new tho. I had no error messages during installation so am assuming all modules were loaded properly. maybe when certain setting in mcc is used, that module is withheld from boot process and therefore an error mssg is produced. Where is a good place to learn about altering the innittab? ( preferably thru GUI, but CL is OK too). Also noticed that fstab is modified with -sync. What does this mean? can I not just use a text editor anymore to change this file? Thanks

    MDV 2005

Would like to boot into KDE desktop by default Installed MDV 2005 community dwnload, everything smooth, during install chose KDE desktop and KDM login mgr. Upon reboot at end of install, was booted into GI. This morning, am greeted by CL. Type in username, PW, then startx and KDE desktop appears. When shutting down am only given option of logout , returned to CL and there is an error message: 'failed to load module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a" (once only module) Never had this happen with MDK 10.0 I have tried various settings in MCC for login mgr, but no luck. 1. Would like my old autologin and shutdown menu back. 2. Also, why was Koffice, tuxracer, and Dansguardian, (is squidguard comparable?) not on the CDs, 3. Am learning how to install software with rpms, but I notice different versions #s of an app. How do I determine (from the numbering?) if an app is for a certain release version of a distro. For example, tried to load Krusader (file mgr) but there was a dependency required that did not exist ( googled all over). Then found Krusader with a different build number and it loaded fine, but even if I remembered what the numbers were, I would never have understood what I was looking at. Any help? Thanks
  19. Not likely, but you may try to trade out with a different vendor. Someone who deals in overstock, surplus or fast moving stock. Try Etech4Sale. good luck

    java plugins

The PageBuilder applet starts to load, then at about 75% I get automatically logged off. Popup says "sign in again and retry" . I have tried several times and rebooted ....no luck. I am able to initialize PageBuilder with my Windows OS and IE 5.5. No errors - ran mozilla from terminal and it opened fine, but did get this message from Yahoo: Warning: You are using a non-Microsoft Windows operating system. Although limited testing has shown that Yahoo! PageBuilder does function in many Macintosh and Unix versions, we cannot be sure that Yahoo! PageBuilder will work on your specific system. You can click on the "Launch PageBuilder" link below to find out if your computer can run Yahoo! PageBuilder. If it cannot, please go to our help site. I guess there is my answer. Any workaround? Trying to go linux all the way

    java plugins

Wow, having lots of trouble with java plugin in MDK 10.0 and Mozilla 1.6 1. download OK from Sun MS used linux .rpm self extracting 2. install OK.....says package installed (I see all the directories and files are where the intallation help says they should be) 3. configure OK.....enabled java in Mozilla 1.6 4. test no go I'm almost positive I did this on another PC a while back, but I eneabled in Konqueror, which was very hard. Cannot recreate that "enable" in Konq now tho. Went to >config Konq>plugins, but no go. Also went to java and javascript. (says they're enabled, but test shows no go) OK............ In /usr/lib I have these directories mozilla mozilla-1.6 each with a plugins folder. I have another MDK 10.0 PC also with 2 mozilla folders. What's up with that? I had linked to the mozilla 1.6 folder cause that's what the STUPID INSTRUCTIONS FROM SUN MS SAY TO DO. As soon as I linked to the plain mozilla folder........voila! Java is now working, but am trying to build a webpage on Yahoo. page builder says java now enabled, but applet loads partway, then I am signed off. Is this evil trick by MS - Yahoo to only allow netscape or IE? Any ideas? Thanks

    Squid

OK, have used proxy settings whitelist in Moz 1.6 or Konqueror to restrict surfing for young kids which works fine. Problem is that links from those "accepted " sites are blocked and rapidly becomes apparent that it would take too long to list all allowable links. 1. Is there a way to set proxy to allow links from accepted sites? 2. Tried to install DansGuardian. Long story short, I trashed my urpmi and perl files. Tried to delete and reinstall urpm and perl......no luck so finally reinstalled OS (thankfully saved /home partition). 3. Now leary of installing DansG so installed SquidGuard successfully, but fairly lost about the whole config thing. I guess I'll figure it out, but how do I access it from : GUI? CL? Is it built into mozilla? i don't see it on menu 4. Any thoughts on Squid, SquidGuard, DansGuardian. From what I've read, I like the idea of content filtering in DG. Thanks
  23. Wow -urmpq command not found either as root or user...hmm...you are right about DG being in /usr/sbin. I think I screwed something up trying to install Dans Guardian. Used MCC to use package mgr to download some dependencies and said install was successful. Now that I think of it, I may have tried to install a different version of DG using dependencies from the first version. My system should be fairly toasted by now, altho most apps and games work. Now however MCC wont start either thru GUI or CL. In GUI, hourglass spins then goes away. In CL: [root@localhost ****]# mcc /usr/bin/perl: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libDrakX/auto/c/stuff/stuff.so: un defined symbol: Perl_Gthr_key_ptr Have rebooted.....no luck Someone suggested "rpm -e drakconf" which I did , then "urpmi drakconf" and this is return: [root@localhost /]# urpmi drakconf Can't locate URPM.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.6/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.6 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.6/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.6 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.6/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.6 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.4 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.3 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.2 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.1 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl .) at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.3/urpm.pm line 13. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/sbin/urpmi line 23. I guess urpmi being in green text means an executable? How would I restore that file? I have MDK 10.0 install on another PC....wil try to study those files, but in meantime.... Any help? Thanks
  24. OK, don't know what I did but dansGuardian showed up twice in software installer so clicked on different version. This time it did download all dependencies and installed them, I know this because download took about 8 min. (DSL) and install took another 3 min. Finally "software loaded successfully" But still don;t know where package went and how to access it. Shouldn't it be listed in menu someplace? Or is it a plugin under mozilla or konqueror? Thanks
  25. trying to install DansGuardian into MDK 10.0. Requires CD4 which I do not have. Went to Easy URPMI, followed instructions, after download , software installer still required CD4. BTW software installer lists required dependencies but doesn't say which ones are where, so I don't know what got loaded from CDs 1,2,3 and what was needed from CD4. (or from 'net) Any help? Thanks
