  1. Roger that, after a few all back to normal
  2. There are various things that could be done. Although iI consider myself still a noob, the information provided does not give me everything i need to point you in the right direction. What I do know is that in general windows xp offers u the opportunity to convert drives to ntfs. As of today it is possible yet not recommended to write on ntfs drives via linux. In case your drive is of the type fat32 u should be able to write to it. In that case you would have to change the settings for it in order for you to be able to write to it. These changes are well documented if you search this forum for /etc/fstab.
  3. Meanwhile, i have seen various posts on installing KDE 3.3. It all sounds a little flaky to me and I understood this version is not yet mattured enough reason why it is not yet included in the official package. I resolved the nvidia driver issue using the information I gathered with previous releases, ie use drakeconf from the command prompt to set the display driver back to vesa, install the kernel-source files, copy the pm.h header file i got earlier through this board, run the nvidia driver downloaded earlier (still the latest driver pack btw), edit the modprobe.preload file to insert nvidia, and modified the xorg.conf file to change the reference to libglx.a to libglx.so.1.0.6111. Also the issue with xmms remained, ie I had to remove the word 'soundwrapper' from the xmms menu command line as before.. Another issue i found was being unable to upgrade gaim to the latest 1.0.2 version that is avialable, therefor i had to remove the gaim package that came with 10.1 install gaim 1.0.2 and manualy inserted a menu item for it in menudrake. Finally and this is a definitely noob question how do i copy the mail I had before in my .Mail folder to its new location. I tried to copy the .Mail folder in its entirity. This seemed to work fine, ie i could see the mails listed but once i click on them the message is empty and the entry blanks out ie points to unkown. Could u please point me in the right direction? thx
  4. :woops: nvidia problem still exists in 10.1 official, good news indeed enough threads to solve this
  5. Today i installed mdk 10.1 official and got some weird issues. For instance i was expecting to have KDE 3.3 but the splash screen shows KDE versien 3.2. Also the nvidia driver did not load properly, ie the same issues exist as with 10.0 official. FYI, i downloaded the iso's using my (standard) clubmembership and burned all 4 to CD's using KB3. The summary show's the install package i have, ie it list all 4 CD's and shows CD 4 to hold KDE 3.3. The default install of the video drivers cause X to fail on boot , ie the command prompt is shown rather than the desktop being loaded. Did i miss something or is it just me having these issues?
  6. as far as i could check the hardware database on mandrakes main site (dutch version tho) has not been updated yet.
  7. the experts advise us to prefer a new install above an update. i am not an expert at all but i believe u can update the software using urpmi. there is also a faq topic related to that that you might want to explore. with respect to the issues, i would say non if u update to the 10.1 official version which is now available. the 10.1 CE is a pre-release and thus is having various issues but is working fine for me, ie i got the issues easily resolved thanks to the help of this forum.
  8. I have tried to get a wireless connection working but failed to do so cuz the usb wireless card wasnt recognised in linux. but the manuals i have read about it (window$ install tho ) suggest to set it up using a cable first and once it is working switch to wireless. The reason for this being that there are too many factors that determin if your connection is working or not, using a cable setup first eleminates quite a few possibilities that things go wrong. Sorry for not being able to help ya, but i am sure interested in the solution
  9. Well if u are happy to pay €189 for an operating system u are very well of with Microsoft and i am sure that price will go up dramatically in the next few years so it will only become better for him
  10. could you please explain more specific how you changed the internet access settings? btw u dont need an dsl internet connection to be setup but a lan internet connection. that is i assume your friend got the adsl cable modem from the internet comp and is connected properly. in that case you would connect to internet via a lan connection. create the internet access account accordingly.
  11. instead of using nero you might want to use the free windows package cdburner xp pro http://www.cdburnerxp.se/download.php i used the default options to burn my original 10.0 official from the iso's downloaded and it worked smooth, quick and without any faults.
  12. thx once the urpmi was set using the easy urpmi link in the faq the initial command installed bittornado
  13. You would have to delete the partition and create a new one in wondows. once created widos will start formatting the partition using the settings you entered when promted
  14. im not 100% sure but i believe you have to reinstall the windows bootloader, that is if you changed that during install of mdk, especialy if you saved the changes to the master bootrecord. You can restore the windows bootloader by booting your computer with cd1 of mdk inserted and press f1 when promted for an install or updqate, and enter rescue. That will give you a menu with the option to restore the windows bootloader.
  15. Thx guys, couldnt have done it without you. And Chris, you couldn't be more specific, beer on me
  16. I tried to install bittornado but failed ie could not find the package. I searched the packages that come with the cd's but nothing there, so im a little stuck there. Then the text mentiones to make sure it is added as one of my repositories, that i do not understand
  17. To begin, I hope not to get you off-track but I had an eth0 failure myself after installing mdk 10.0 official. I am using the on-board gig-thernet card on an asus mobo. The bring eth0 up i had to modify the ifcfg-eth0 config file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and insert the line 'MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes' without the quotes. This fix is now incorporated in version 10.1 CE.
  18. Navigate to menudrake (system>other>menudrake) and delete the word "soundwrapper" at the command entry for xmms.
  19. :woops: i would love to try, but uh could u be a little bit more specific? thx
  20. Hi Steve, I have a comparable configuration as you have. This is how I tackled the problem. During install when mdk ask you to point a partition where to put it choose custom partitioning. In the next window u can delete the partition(s) you created earlier for mdk. next make sure to create one partition from the available space for mdk format ext3. also make 1 partition for the swap file. as rule of thumb this is 2x your memory. Click done and the install will continue and format the partitions for you and you should be all set. Note of caution: when clicking and deleting partitions make sure to point to the right partition to delete as all information will be lost on that partition. As to raid, i am not working on a raid configuartion ie i only have one sata drive. the asus bios defaults to raid config and i had to change that to ide. This is found on the advanced tab of the bios screen.
  21. Fahd Im sure this bloke is all . To make these kinda statements wich are very truly false statements leaves two options: a. he doesnt know squat he is talking about b. he is being paid by m$ to make these malicious statements As you can see from my systems spec im running mdk 10.! CE with a sata drive only and it works like a charm. in fact i dont have that many issues at all with this (pre)release other than the video which is a very well known and documented issue. So next time before you start ranting, make sure u have your facts straight unless you dont mind to look like an utter dumba$$
  22. by the time the mailman arrives to deliver the cheap cd's you might as well download them again like 10 times or so and sell them to your neighbours, that will buy you time do do other stuff like
  23. Hi, im using mdk 10.1 CE for a while now and i am using the KDE desktop. KDE comes default with konqueror as the browser. I changed through the mcc the browser to mozilla, that is i can only enter something that konqueror represents itself as mozilla browser. Point is everytime i open a link in an email on a forum or whatever it is opened with konqueror and i would like it to be mozilla. I searched this forum but could not locate anything to this subject, could anyone of you please point me in the good direction to solve this puzzle? Thanks a million
  24. :woops: i still havent gotten into trying this, has someone else don it in the meantime and if so dit it work?
  25. I dont understand why u (had to) unzipped anything. The files you downloaded should be iso files ie being an image of an entire cd. the purpose thereof is using the burning software to create an exact copy of the original cd's, hence no unzipping or anything else is needed.. Could you please post a link to the files you downloaded?
