  2. here is what i found http://www.nvg.ntnu.no/linux/versions.html funny, thats history, need to go to a museum. I was seaching with Google/Linux the shell command to get the curently running kernel version, I don't remember it. It makes me remind what i noticed before: there too much obsolete pages about Linux, it complicates the search. roland P.S: btw: what is this @à"¹ shell command to get the kernel version ?
  3. depending on your configuration, you also may have to uncheck "Set Hostname from DHCP Adress" ( or someting like that: i'm translating ) on MCC::DrakConnect roland
  4. no i mean dhcpd: the server suposed to be set by DHCP Wizard on MCC roland
  5. done ... i've just installed the internet server at the office it is all fresh. here how i do: - first set and check internet connection on the server - second set and check the local network (dhcp, samba ?) - third run DrakeGw expert mode (manualy) !!!!! careful: maximize the windows: sometime there are too little on MCC tools and you can't see some buttons !!!!!!!! it must do the job i know what it is. except those days: wife and children all gone for a holyday week 8) even if sometime they miss :? by roland
  6. Mandrake 9.1 I've installed internet connection sharing with DrakGw. Works perfectly well but the firewall (shorewall) blocks file sharing. To unblock this i've modified /etc/shorewall/policy like this: ############################################################################### #SOURCE DEST POLICY LOG LEVEL LIMIT:BURST masq net ACCEPT fw net ACCEPT #rv masq fw ACCEPT #<==== HERE fw masq ACCEPT #<==== and HERE #fin rv net all DROP info all all REJECT info ############################################################################### What are the concequencies in tem of security ? Is is safe to enable internet connection server/firewall and file server (samba) in the same box ? thanks roland
  7. hi, Mdk9.1 when installing a internet connection server, install a DHCP server and DNS server too. I've just noticed that DHCP Wizard does _not_ create any /etc/dhcpd.conf file at all ! So the DHCP server does not work so the internet connection sharing does not works as well. Check on MCC->System->Services (or something like that) if dhcpd service is running. If not you will have to make your dhcpd.conf file yourself or find one. Just ask i can send you the one i got from my home box witch is quite generic and works. So: 1- set the DHCP server and check the local network 2- run DrakeGw, expert mode concerning the network setup That should do it hope this help roland
  8. ?? saw many people who love ML here, one who _loves_ RH ;-) , none who hate it. roland
  9. hi, Get a motherboard from my office, without any doc nor driver. It was from a ACER, PIII 733, with sound and network on it. Absolutely no problem with Mdk 9.0 and 9.1. How can improve my knowledge about Linux if it is so easy ? I had to install Win98 too and had a lot of trouble finding all the Win drivers and make all that work correctly ! But as usual, with Win i didn't learn anything. Just remove a driver, reboot, retry, pray, reinstall and reboot until by luck all that become more or less stable. Mdk is easier and faster to install ! roland
  10. in French: Centre de Contrle Mandrake -> Matériel -> Choisir le gestionnaire de connexion in English i guess something like: Mandrake Controle Center -> Hardware -> Choose the Connection Manager I agree with you, i go back to standard KDM. For maitntenance Session i use to connect on root with KDE too. If your pc is driving a nuclear plant, you should NOT. roland
  11. Mandrake 9.1 ( may be its the same on 9.0 ?) there is some scrips there /etc/sysconfig/network-scrips like drackconnect_conf or ifup-ppp that perhaps can help you good luck roland
  12. agree ! generaly speaking i agree with what you say in your site. so it must be good ;-) roland
  13. hello No i don't find the procedure good. okay, i have to suggest one. i will do so as soon as my F#à@)&G CD burner work (already more than 8 hours of sweating before i realized it does not work on M$ Win as well ..) didn't work for me. i don't know why. options ide-cd ignore=hdb, hdc seems ok (at least no bad messages). that is what i was saying: newbees are unable to guess: it is important to be very precise. sure you have to reboot. It might works better if you run LILO before ! nowhere it is indicated. what ?? damned don't see that !! i'm going to have a look ciao roland
  14. this one http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=4737 links to this page: http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/linu...r-lnxw12BurnCDs (ibm :!: ) witch 'im sorry is a bad page: i have some doubt. dont seems to be right. is it correct :?: at the __end__ of lilo.conf ?? for me it is "failsafe" boot section .... and what about running lilo as a root before .. rebooting .. ? i consider myself as a newbee on linux and i'm able to see that this kind of "advices" are just able to disgust new comers . cheers roland

    mdksecure kernel

well said, good way of thinking ! roland
  16. roland

    very dissapointed

do you see this: Error scenario: You have an ethernet card for the local LAN and a modem for internet access and you can't reach the internet. Why: Drakconnect wrongly asks for a gateway, and ppp can't set your modem connection as the default route. Solution: As root, edit /etc/sysconfig/network and manually remove the GATEWAY entry. there: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/errata.php3 ? roland

    Firewall setup

when you install internet connection sharing with Drakconf, the wizard install shorewall see shorewall doc, quite clear roland
