    /home lost ?

The only idea I have now is to run parted mkfspart to force the partition being ext3 as it is supposed to be, next run parted rescue. I have little hope it will work. I will wait a few days before doing that, hoping for more ideas . Anyway that's not a drama if I lose all, I will not spend €1000 to fix the partition. Ok, I've played so much with partitions before and never lost any byte that this time I was may be too confident. So until I prove there is something wrong with DiskDrake it's still right.(I'm going to do some test in a few days) If you know a software other than fsck or parted to fix partitions I'm still interested. Thanks roland

    /home lost ?

Only /home partition ( now hda6 ) had been damaged. On DiskDrake: Before the change it was like this: hda1 Windows empty space hda6 swap hda7 / ext3 hda5 /home ext3 After the change it's like that hda1 Windows hda5 (was empty space) hda7 swap hda8 / ext3 hda6 /home ext3 I had trouble formating hda5 but no messages. I exited DiskDrake, modified fstab and lilo.conf, run lilo and rebooted. But now hda6 is damaged. didn't want to mount. I let fsck run at boot time when I was asked. Now hda6 wants only to be mounted as ext2 and is empty !! Thanks I'll try parted. If I run fsck /dev/hda it says its clean fsck.ext3 /dev/hda: same DiskDrake now see hda6 as a ext3 but I can't mount it as ext3. Only as ext2. ?? Other ideas after the info I give here ? thanks roland

    /home lost ?

I didn't know where to post that. Hi, I'm not anonimous I'm roland :( I did it, I damaged my /home partition !! ( fortunately at home not at work ) WARNING If ever DiskDrake displays something like: your partitions had been renumbered: hda5 is now hda4 hda6 is now hda5 ... You must know that: DISKDRAKE THAT IS USUALLY A GOOD SOFTWARE IS NOW A PIECE OF B"#²~ù@T EXIT IMMEDIATELY DON'T FORGET TO CHANGE YOUR /etc/fstab AND YOUR /etc/lilo.conf ACCORDING TO THE NEW NUMBER, RUN lilo AND REBOOT ! You have been warned Now the question is: How do I restaure my /home that was on hda6 ????? Do you know a software to restaure a damaged partition ? Help please roland
  6. right. Masquerading _without_ filtering: enter as root: iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward replace ppp0 by eth0 or whatever is connected to your modem/router Note about dhcp, just in case: I have a ADSL modem here that acts as a dhcp server. But it gives always the same IP adress. so I tried to set eth1 (connected to the modem) as static with this ip adress. Does not work. may be the modem expect a kind of "negociation" to activate. Can't it be the same with your modem router ? hope this help roland
  7. lucky you are ! I think there is a lot of nice girls there that all want to be taught english ;-) bring them here ! roland

    Ethernet Cards.

If I were you I would try the PCI one first. If the chipset is not all new, Mdk must detect it and 3COM is a big brand. Almost no risk there. roland
  9. Thanks everybody Even if I take only 1/4 of the congratulations as the Yin Yety does 3/4 of the job thats already much more I could expect. roland :-)
  10. nothing It works on hdc ... I'll not investigate more asuming the prob must be specific to my config thanks roland
  11. I was taking my lunch. As you know, it's 1:42PM in France. I'm back now. I'll go on editing my previous post. Yves. sorry I was not clear enough: I mean where are you in the translation ( as I don't want the heap to collide the stack ;-) ) Anyway: Everythin I could do today is here. Next tonight but the work may be finished then 8) good luck. For those who don't speak french: Work on progress, please do not disturb ;-) roland
  12. Here some more, still from the end to the beginning Still ok ? Yin Yeti where are you ? roland
  13. Ok. automatic translation are getting better but not perfect yet. There is several here able to translate that and we don't have to do all the same job. So as I'm the least qualified ( my spelling is horrible ) and as I have no time today to translate everything I start from the end ! lets go Okay I sweat to do only that, hope its not ridiculous. Please if it is useless don't hesitate to tell me so I don't wast my time. Thanks roland
  14. crashed ! for the first time because of the CD-ROM It worked well when I've installed Mdk9.1 I don't remember if I've mounted a CD since then. But now each time I try to mount a CD-ROM it kills my server: frozen, dead: mouse doesn't move, keyboard not responding, even NumLock or CapsLock Led don't switch, masquerading dead, samba too, dhcp server as well: FROZEN. The CD-ROM is a Phillips PCCD048, installed as slave on hdb, the PC's chipset is a Intel 440 BX. What is strange is that I can boot on the CD-ROM and run the install CD, rescue mode ( last crash destroyed my /etc/fstab ) Does somebody had the same problem ? thanks roland
  15. If you want to undo what DrakGw does before retrying again: DrakGw installs shorewall and bind. To undo what DrakGw do, uninstall shorewall and uninstall bind as well. !! I'm not sure !!, but I think you have then to reinstall tmdns if you want your pc to connect to the web again (without connection sharing of course) hope this help roland
  16. I send it doday 15/09 pm'd here are some guideline i made public as it could interest some and may be some here could improve it.;-) How to set samba as a NTdomain server for Win95/98 clients 1) Server side: Mdk 9.1 !! let your firewall share netlogon (see below ) !! I took the default smb.conf set by MCC wizard The most relevant changes are: workgroup = GROUP security = share local master = yes os level = 64 domain master = yes preferred master = yes domain logons = yes [netlogon] comment = Network Logon Service path = /var/lib/samba/netlogon guest ok = yes writable = no share modes = no 2) Clients side: ( !!! I'me trying to translate from a french Windows. Hope you could see what I mean .. ) Control Panel->Network Let only TCP/IP protocol: remove all NETBEUI or IPX/SPX stuff select Client for Microsoft Network ->Properties check "Connect on a NT Domain" enter the group name as domain name. "GROUP" on this case. Of course reboot all the M$ Win machines That's all and works well for me :-) roland
  17. They made a Beta1 anouce, had a lot of bug report, the Beta2 was better and no it seems the RC is ready: no ads on boxs mdk, no ads on screensaver, no intrusive ads.;-) roland
  18. If the ads are easy to remove, its not a so a big deal IMO. You are a little hard with Mandrake. They had a very bad management past, and now they have to start from zero with there only valuable asset: there community (you/us :-) )and a good product. No Marketing plan ? how can you know ? It is long and expensive to set.. before it earns money. And they need money _now_. ads is easy and fast. And it can be fun too: imagine how an ad for a surf or ski companie while Mandrake is installing can be ? A nice little film of extrem surf in hawai or extrem skying on the alps with rock'n roll music ? ok i'm dreaming but you see what I mean. On some point you are right: - boxs or paid downloaded must _NOT_ have ads, - NO SPYWARE - NO SPYWARE - NO SPYWARE roland
  19. Hi At work, our network seems to look like yours: a Mdk9.1 server and several Win98SE clients. Ive setted it up using MCC tools but it was not perfect: sometime WinExplorer Network neightborhood (neightborhood: what a hard spelling!) well didn't display all the shares, even after a long time so we had to do a Tools/Search/Computer (Outils/Rechercher/Ordinateur) on WinExplorer to read/write on some pcs. That was not all the time and at first I thought everything was correct. I found a solution: let Samba be a NT domain master. If you have same problem, let me know I can help roland
  20. thanks too :-) I'll try to remember that: urpmf urpmf urpmf urpmf urpmf urpmf urpmf urpmf urpmf urpmf urpmf urpmf urpmf urpmf urpmf urpmf urpmf zzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZ top ! roland
  21. thanks. I'm going to install it right now - by - roland
  22. - nmblookup: command not found: what package do I have to install ? - in general: there must be a urpmi command for that: what is it ? ( ok I can read man urpmi but if somebody already knows ... ) thanks roland
