weird partition names? (/dev/.../part7 not hda7)
roland replied to Peep's topic in Installing Mandriva
/dev/hdx are links. They point to things like /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/partx roland -
can this one help ? http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?sho...=15entry79821 roland

You may be able to configure your network/modem without X: on the command line, type mcc, it will lauch a text mode version of Mandrake Controle Center. roland

Hey, Roland, I don't think we should encourage people new to Linux to use the upgrade option. At least not until it's better. You are right. I should have put a warning: It worked fine with me but it's just me roland
-
great ! what about putting "SOLVED" under the tittle of the thread ? roland
-
No I can't play the bad guy: I'm too good for that Well for now it seems difficult to help. The poor Mr Ashraf Tariq and Mr Hasanen Nawfal are probably recieving huge amount of e-mails with tons of greeting and kind proposals: old Red Hats, old Computers and even one proposed medicine. One on the mailing list said they had been on CNN. is it true ? I guess it's going to be a little difficult for them now to deal with all that. I wish we can help but frankly I don't see how. roland

me too. I've installed is upgrading from 9.1 and I almost had no problem with it at install and none at all using it roland
-
- it must be possible to disable the onboard card on the BIOS - there you can download the nVidia driver http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display...y_ia32_1.0-5328 close X before running it: MCC->Hardware->XDrake->option disable X at boot, restart and run the nVidia install roland

You should have a look there http://www.digitaldaemon.com/index0.html . based in New Jerey, . Else may be you just have to ask (The boss is ManiaC++ if you have heard of him) [EDIT2] hum I've didn't been there for a long time and there is some funny link to smartsoft.cc. Better go to smartsoft.us instead .. roland

Hello, for an audio cd it's normal: see previous post. but what do you mean with "another disc in": a data one ? Just in case, for data CDs: your cdrom is not supermounted. is it on purpose ? there was a time supermount was a problem but it's rare now. - If you don't use supermount you have to mount it manually: on a shell type: mount /mnt/cdrom then you can access it. to unmount it type on a shell: umount /mnt/cdrom - if you want your cd to be mounted/unmounted automatically then comment this line on your /etc/fstab (put a # in the front of the line): #/dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom auto user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 and add this line none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdb,fs=auto,ro,--,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0 0 0 roland

You can still check your /etc/resolv as said in the previous post and show us what ifconfig -a says but I guess it's not the problem: - if ping <a IP address> does not work that means the problem is routing or firewall correct ? - if the route is good so that's the firewall imho or I have reached my knowledge limit By the way witch distro do you run ? roland
-
Hi, Your route seems good to me. Do you have this in your /etc/resolv.conf ? search ox.ac.uk nameserver 129.67.1.180 nameserver 129.67.1.1 roland
-
?? where is it ? roland
-
He he. I guess you mean on political discussion ? this forum really shows how nice free speech is. But lets be soft at the beginning: may be they don't know that it has to be taken with a grain of salt. I suggest we do that way: you play the bad guy, I play the nice guy ok ? :P roland

it's nice. I've subscribed on the mailing list and see what I can do (without money nor time it will be difficult :( ) At least I think in EU we can send some stuff to Irak and I have some RTC modems, books, and CD that can be some interest. For the americans I think it would not be difficult to find some "relays" in europe to send things in Iraq. If one here want to send something, pm me, perhaps I can send it by my company [EDIT: i have to check first /EDIT]. But hey for now it seems it's a single person group and they need some time to organize. I hope we soon have some questions from Iraqis in this forum :) roland

Hi you can boot on the CD1, rescue mode. There you can reinstall your bootloader. try this roland

well, I feel a problem of routing or name resolution. If you do a ping google.com how does it replies ? ping google.com if you ping 216.239.57.99 (google.com IP address) how does does it replies ? ping 216.239.57.99 Ok you use kppp, good. anyway do you try to configure it using DrakConnect to see how it goes ? You should enter the DNS addresses manually. It must be possible to find them in the web site of your ISP. [EDIT] a last word: what is exactly the error message ? roland
-
Hi the shutdown command must be your friend. on a shell, type man shutdown it will explain you what you all you can do with it roland
-
Hi check in /etc/resolv.conf if there is the IP address of you ISP DNS something like: nameserver 212.27.32.176 nameserver 212.27.32.177 (just an example) If you don't have them, ask your ISP of see if you can have them on there web site roland

yea better not lose the key. It might be safer to have a wireless nano device implanted under the skin. that would be the triumph of linux: who can be crazy enough to have M$ Win implanted in the body ? roland
-
My mistake. perhaps it works but I don't think it's the right answer. Well I think that if you have a NIC connected to the WAN and an other NIC connected to an other PC, it's exately the same as if you have a NIC connected to the WAN and an other NIC connected to a LAN through a hub. So IMO the best is: let Drake GW do the job: - remove shorewall, bind to clean everything, - configure the NIC connected to the other pc with a static IP address like 192.168.1.1, and give it a LAN name like "server.local.network" - configure the other pc with a dynamic IP address, and give it a LAN name like "pc.local.network", - install dhcpd on the server, - check pinging pcs each other, - now install and test samba to enable file sharing, - AFTER, run MCC->DrakeGW to set the internet sharing - test internet sharing, - Now, file sharing may not work any more because of the firewall: shorewall. I have a solution to fix that but it seems it's not the better one. search on the forum or ask once you are there. by roland P.S: you know you need a crossed wire to directly connect 2 pcs isn't it ?

9.2 install with LG CD-ROM and no firmware
roland replied to luckyzivi's topic in Installing Mandriva
Better not be wrong: all the pro-M$ Win are watching you :D I were you I would install ML 9.1 waiting for ML X or the end of warranty roland -
I you plan to run Samba (one pc will be the server) there is an option in the [Global] section of /etc/smb.conf: interfaces = 192.168.12.2/24 192.168.13.2/24 for example you may have a look at it thought I never tried roland

For now we just have to be a pain: no rest for him Soon or later he will be tired enough roland
