  1. From the cooker mailing list:

    From: Warly

Subject: [Cooker] 9.2 ISOs has been sent

    Date: 24 Sep 2003 10:36:12 -0000

Which means that if no major critical bugs are found in the next few

days, it will be considered as final.

Thanks to all who have participated in 9.21, the mandrake linux

distribution is becoming more and more a community project, and I am

    really happy with that.

When we will be sure these ISOs are really final, that is to say by

the end of next week, club members and contributors should have

exclusive access to the download edition ISOs.

For others ISOs will be freely available worldwide by the end of october.

Alright! GGo Maandrake. It's about time those guys thought of themselves a little bit. I'm not a club member but at least now i have some incentive to join. Altough i was going to join and buy the powerpack anyways
  2. few number of updates of packages?

    gnome 2.4 will be in there (i'm a gnome person ;-) )

the 2.6.0-test kernel is on it, isn't it?  i don't remember

Mandrake sticks to their release cycle pretty tightly, regardless of number of upgrades.  they'll make the updates after the initial release i'm sure.  but who are we to speculate what's going on behind Mandrake's doors.  The release will come, we'll get it, it'll have what it'll have, and everyone will go on living ;-)

gnome 2.4 is already in cooker so yeah, kde is still 3.1.3 and oo.o is still rc4 (but rc5 source packages are reportedly on some mirrors sooooo...) 2.6-test5 in in contrib (and it booted a lot further than 2.6-test4 :)
  3. *sigh*.....

I really think that ALL games should be boycotted if they release a linux server, but not a linux client.  We help make their games great on-line, and they dont give a rats ass about us.  You might want to all HL2 to that list

that's another great valve game i definitely won't be playing (the otehr is the original HL which the refuse to port and i refuse to run under wine anymore).
  4. Also Debian has some 'unique ' features.

    First the RVM.

Thats the re-virginiser module.  It seems to be installed as default and has the effect of making you feel like you never used linux before...

    second see number 1.

ah yes, the re-virginizer module. /me moves on

It also has this prog that allows you to load modules into the kernel on the fly which i find to be much better than the *mod* prog

  5. You've only made 8 posts here and at least three of em are in offtopic! They've got to be doing something right. Now me on the other hand ...

Well, I'm not your typical newbie. I'll ask questions if I need to, but so far I haven't found anything I can't figure out :D and I'm not really a newbie. Just new here....

i was just messin with ya. come to #mub and i'll do it even more
  6. I think adding adware is lame.  Why would I want to install a distro with adware???  If they would spend more time making a distro that actually works they would make money. I'd buy it, but as it is everytime I install mandrake something is screwed up and I'm not forking out any of my dough for something that doesn't work... Customer service would be nice too. I sent Mandrake tech support several emails more than 3 years ago and I'm still waiting for a reply, just 1 reply would be nice.  No thanks, I'll just go with SuSe or Redhat...

Customer service? You've got it right here! and if you give me you e-mail i'd be more than happy to send you a message (just 1 reply though :))

But seriously mandrake's come a long way in three years. Three years ago, dvd playback needed a degree, usb mice were toys of the nerdy, X looked like a 2 year old put it together. A lot's happened in three years and FYI MDK has been under new management for a while.

As for the adware, like Gael said, it's always been there. I've always seen it, I've always not wanted to see it and you know what? I turned it off. yeah. There's a button that says Details that you can click on and see which packages are getting installed. The only difference w/ 9.2 is that you won't be getting MDK adds you'll be getting company X's adds.

Now the screensavers ... that sucks. That's new and that's post-install, and that will probably be a pain to remove. I think i read somewhere that there won't be adds in screensavers though so ...

  7. wonder if part of your problem is the upgrade from 8.2 instead of doing a fresh install. My 9.1 has Cups 1.1.19 and it looks like you have 1.1.16. The upgrade is generally a problem, especially from 8.2 to 9. Assuming your /home is on its own partition a fresh install should not be too big a problem.

the 1.1.16 is really only telling you what version the config file came with. Since he edited it the new urpmi would not overite his file, instead it would save as .rpmnew or if he used rpmdrake there would be the option to delete, leave alone or use, the new config. i have this problem in openoffice where if i send one use one printer settup nothing prints (jobs are still there). but if i use file menu to select mdk configured printer it works. i can give you a screenshot if this is cryptic.
