  1. Thank you for your help. No one had loged in. However, I have deleted the MPI user and changed the pass word on my user. Should I change the root pass word and if so how? Hopeful

    floppy mount

Hi I have just re-installed Mandrake 10.1 official on a harddrive and cannot mount my floppy drive. I have tried it under control centre and it says it is done but when I click the icon Kconquer comes up but reads nothing in the drive when there is a floppy in there? I have tried added device but when the icon is clicked I get a message that nothing is mounted. I have gone back to contral centre but the different questions in the mount point floppy drive do not mean anything to me. Can someone help, Please? hopeful
  3. Hi :o I updated with urpmi auto-update last night, and when I booted up this morning I found a new account in the login window. The user is called MPI and I can access it using my password (the desktop I got up was the same as the one when you initially install Mandrake)!!! I am not at all sure what was updated last night, though I did see a lot of mention of something called noarch, I think, and pearl appeared in a lot of lines. Does anyone have any idea of what has happend. whether it is something I should be very worried about, and is my machine safe to use? Why has this user account been set up? I am facinated to know what has happened, it is not everyday you get a mysterious user appear on one's machine? yours Hopeful.

Hi I am having a problem reinstalling my speedtouch 330. I accidently destroyed my installation. However, I have reinstalled before with no problem. This time it is different I have installed all the right software and firmware(rev4fw copied into the right place), edited speedtouchconf.sh. but when I ./speedtouchconf.sh if goes through the process of installing the software but I get this message The modem lights should start flashing for approx. 60 seconds... Wed Feb 23 22:48:22 GMT 2005 The modem_run command failed (code 240) modem_run results: Unable to locate firmware If you have a silver modem, make sure you're using rev4fw.zip http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net/rev4fw.zip FAILED because of modem_run error 240 This is most puzzling. Can anyone help me out please
  5. Hi This is not the usual question about installing speedtouch, but rather I have had it installed and working but today it would not connect to the internet and one of the green lights (the right one looking at it from the front) constantly flashed. I tried to re-install the speedtouch software and everything loaded. When I ran speedtouchconf.sh it gave a message which said that that it need root permission to run and that there was a modem_run error 255. The same thing happened a couple of days ago and rebooting did the trick but this time it has not worked. Any ideas? Hopeful
  6. Hi Aussie John A day ! more like several. I agree with the need to reinstall, but I am a bit hesitant because of having to reinstall my speedtocuh. I have done it once and have the instructions, it is just a matter of time. I think the big mistake I made was with the NVIDIA driver install. The irony is that it made no real difference to the quality of my monitor and I do not play 3d games. But any advice on installing them would be welcome. I have to say that I have been going through a very step learning curve and I am now able to do things I never thought I would. So it has not been a negative expereince. Thanks for your help Hopeful
  7. Hi Ixthusdan I am not logging in as root, but as user.
  8. Hi Aussiejohn I tried kcontrol and got the following message [otto@localhost otto]$ kcontrol Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". 9. Hi Ixthusdan and AussieJohn Thanks for the advice it worked a treat Now to the next step all the crash messages I get. These are along the lines "the application unknown (usually K something ge kmix etc) crashed adn caused signal 11 *SIGSEGV). I have been getting these since I either installed How to, into the menu or updated myfiles. I have also not been able to configure KDE with LookandFeel because System no longer appears in Menu. Anyway thanks for the help, it is great to be able to use Windowmaker again. happy hopeful
  10. Hi spiedra I have done as you instructed but it has not changed things, I still have to login at console!!
  11. Hi Ixthusdan I have done that. The Nvidia splash no longer comes up. I presume I am still meant to be in init 3. What now? Confused
  12. Dear Ixthusdan Thank you for the reply. I have tried to do what you say but I cannot work out what to change in the XFConfig file. Where will I find the driver to change? I fully agree with one step at a time. Hopeful
  13. Hi I have installed 10 official set everything up and a few days ago I updated everything with control centre update software. Ever since I have numerous crash messages coming up re Kconquer etc and I have lost system out of the menu, I have also become stuck in init 3 -though this may have happened when I installed the Nvidia drivers. The installation works but I cannot login as gnome etc and I would like to be able to get System back so I can configure desktop etc. Any ideas? Confused
  14. Hi I am not sure if this is the right place for this question but I have installed the Nvidia drivers -I have TNT2- and then ran glxgears to test it and got the following message: xlib: extension “GLX” missing on display “:0.0” Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual What does it mean and what should I do? Hopeful
  15. Hi I have installed the Nvidia drivers (i think? there is not Nviidia splash screen) but since doing it I have become stuck in init 3. How do I get back to loggining in in init 5? I would like to be able to get back into gnome and windowmaker. I am also getting a lot of crash messages about Kconquer crashing etc. I am running on 800 600 85hz, using the drivers for a Mag innovision D154, but I am not sure if this is the right model because I cannot find any specs on my Mag innovision monitor. I have not installed the windows fonts yet. I also cannot check the anti-alias becaseu I have lost the ability to confiigure my desktop. In KDE I changed the menu so the how to's would be in it and since I have lost the ability to configure the desktop, no system in the menu and nothing in the control centre. It is all a bit of a mess really and I cannot work out if it is due installling the Nvidia drivers or the recent updating and changing of the menu I have done. HELP yours Hopeful
  16. Dear All I like linux a lot, especially for the net, but the main problem I have found with it is that the clarity of the image on my monitor is not as clear and defined as with Windows. I have a mag monitor and it always looks a bit out of focus, dull, not well defined. Are there things I should be refining in the way of resolutions? My grapfics card is a TNT2. I have tried different resolutions but it makes not difference. Knoppix 3.3 looks pretty clear when run from the CD, but when installed the problem is the same. I think one of the reasons could be that unlike windows word etc there is not well definded white background when using OpenOffice, rather it appears off white. It can be very tiring looking at the screen becasue it is just slightly not quite right, if you know what I mean. I have tried with the download Nvidia drivers but it does not make a difference, but I have not tried with the latest version. This is the only real niggle I have with Linux, but I am sure someone has a simple answer. I am using Mandrake 10 Official. My machine has AMD K2 500Hz, 300 odd ram, Nvidia TNT2 graphic. Mandrake runs my monitor as a Gateway 700 which is the same as with Windows Me. Yours hopefully Hopeful

    speedtouch 330

Hi Shorewall appears to be working. I tested it with sygate and got a sea of blue. However, sygae recommend that all ports should be blocked. How do I go about achieving this. I cannot find any sort of interface with Shorewall -outside of the installation process. Is it a question of putting the necessary ports into the advanced section of the installation and also adjusting the levels and permissions with the seperate programmes under security. Also is there a command line I can use to connect and disconnent the broadband connection without having to turn the machine off? Sorry to pester you but such progress has been made that I want to cross the Ts and dot the I

Hi Spinynorman Will configuring the way you suggest conflict with the fact I have already configured with lets-eat-gray? Shorewall says you need configure with drakeconnect. Also when you use the system configure method it comes up with initially a whole load of different ways to connect, which should I use? These are stupid question but I do not want to lose my connection again
  19. Lets eat gray I have to thank you from the bottom of my heart for supplying the instructions for setting up speedtocuh 330. I have spent nearly two weeks pulling my hair out, reinstalling and in the process lossing my windows partition and then erasing it. The sense of achievement is wonderfully. Thank you so much. To all those seeking to set up speedtouch carefully follow the instructions and you will get there. A question though lets eat gray. I am at present setup to load at boot, is there a way I can set up an ican which will allow me to connect and disconent at will? Once again many thanks hopeful

    speedtouch 330

Get the flags out, break open the beers!!! I have done it, I am connected, after two weeks of trying, numerous installs and wiping out my windows partition. Yepeeee!!!! Spineynorman I want to thank you especially, your help has got me through it. But above all I have to thank lets-eat-gray. Simple straight forwards instruction The trick was to follow the instructions you linked me to and not to untar the tar for the grey modem. To all those desperately pulling their hair out to get speedtouch working, there is an anwer and lets eat gray has it. However, I now have a couple of questions -at present the connection is set up to open when booting up, however, I would like to have the ability to turn it on and off when I am working i.e., is there an icon or something that will allow this. It will also help my partner who I wanted to introduction broadband and Linux to. She does not have much experience with Linux and so I want to make things as easy as possible for here? - I have read about problems with surewall and speedtouch any advice would be welcome - one final question in my desperation I have used the erase the whole disk option and thus now have one partition, is it possible to reload windows?

    speedtouch 330

hi Havin it Thank you for the advice. It was with great anticipation that I carefully carried out each step laid out, thus it was with great disappointment when I got the following message at the end ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol POINTOPOINT NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:3 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) It does not mean a lot to me but given it is minus running I presume I have a problem. I see from spinynorman that speedtouch.confsh needs gcc which in on cd 4. I am using Community which does not have cd 4. Could this be the problem? Can I download gcc without downloading the whole CD? When going through the network install the first window after clicking ADSl is " which net/main driver should I try". here I simply click next, then click again and then do previous which takes me back to a window that has the speedtouch ticked. Am I making a big mistake here. Is there something under "which net/main driver should I try" I should be looking for your ever hopeful [copy of preceding post removed by spinynorman - please use 'add reply' button]
  23. Hi I can see from the board that the frustrating time I have been having trying to get speedtocuh installed is a common problem. I have tried to follow one of the messages but the address given for a file was no longer avaiblable. I have got into a huge mess and pickle over this so I think I need to go back to basics and start again; - how do you install the USB ADSL modem with mandrake@? - how do you establish the connection with the ISP? I have tried to follow the steps laid out in install adsl but have got nowhere: I have copies mgmt.o itp /usr/share/speedtouch, I have set connection as PPOa as recommended by my ISP -Pipex-, but I cannot get KPPP to recognise it. It would probably help if I could estabilish where my modem is: is there a USB device manager under mandrake? I have posted messages about this else where and have had good advice but I hope that given the speciality of this notice board I might be able to make more progress. I would help if mandrake did not say that this modem is compatible, but gave a warning that installing involved a lot of work. My system is a 500Hk, AMD K2, 3000 odd ram runing Mandrake community [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
