do you get any errors in: /var/log/Xorg.0.log when you restart the xserver after changing screensize

Thats right. You need libstdc++.so.5 and you can find it in contrib. Go to: http://www.mandrivausers.org/easyurpmi/ and follow instructions to add contrib (and others) then: urpmi libstdc++5 in a konsole as root

try to type: ./thunderbird in the folder.
