  1. OK, I just downloaded and installed Totem. See if this works. Instead of choosing "quit" in the "Movie" menu, choose "close" by first choosing the arrow that is above the "Movie" menu. "close" is also the alt-f4 keyboard command. Kieth
  2. See if there is a "quit" and "close" option in the file menu. If the icon is in the panel bar when you close Totem, then it might start when you turn on the computer. Kaffeine does that to me all the time. If there is a quit option, then choose that when you are through with Totem.
  3. I don't understand what the CAS latency does, but anyway, I tried experimenting. In BIOS, I have CAS latency choices of 2, 2.5 and 3. With DDR, I have the following choices: 200, 266, 285, 333 and 400. I tried all the possible options, running the memory test dan told me about with each option. I only tried test #5, as that was the only one that was originally showing errors. If I ran all the memory tests on all the options, I would never get done as it takes several minutes. The following combinations SHOWED errors: DDR200 - 2.5 DDR400 - 2, 2.5 & 3 As I mentioned earlier, my memory boards are DDR400 - S3+ What would be the best thing to do? How would I go about changing RAM settings that scarecrow mentioned? Kieth
  4. With a little bit of trial and error I learned something! My 2 memory sticks are the same: S3+, DDR400. The BIOS was set up for CAS 2.5, DDR200. I changed the values, put in both memory boards and ran the memory test again. I still received thousands of errors. With only 1 in, there are no errors, so I guess that's what I have to do. Just a curiosity question, though. Will the system run better with the new BIOS settings? Of course, up to now, my system hasn't closed down, but it is also true that I have been very busy doing other things besides studying (I study/write using the computer). So the computer has been off more than it's been on. Thanks again, Kieth
  5. You can use Kaffeine. I just hooked up. On the home page, click on "Listen Live to CBC Radio One" line. Then click on "Help". Then click on "Visit our full list of streaming URLS". A new window will open up with a long list of stations. Copy and paste the address you want in Kaffeine. In Kaffeine, click on "file", then "open URL" and paste the URL station address you want. While writing this, I'm listening to CBC Radio One Calgary. Kieth
  6. Thanks Ian. I'll check it out later. Kieth
  7. Thanks bunches. That's what I'll do then. Before writing "solved" next to the topic title, I'll wait a few days to see if my system crashes. Thanks again everyone. Kieth
  8. Hey, another question just came to mind. As I stated, I have 2 sticks of 512 each. I only have the errors when both are in their slots. If I just run with one in, would that resolve the problem, or would that be "jerry-rigging" it (old US navy term = putting it together in a haphazard, not stable and possibly bad way)? I think I would rather do something like that instead of reducing the memory usage, which would just lower the chance that I would have problems, but still keep the "danger". I really don't do anything with graphics. My graphics card also has 250 Mb of memory. I'm just an "ordinary" user that looks at his pictures, writes letters, reads MUB everyday, writes e-mails, etc. So maybe it would be best to just reduce the amount of memory I have to avoid spending any money right now. (I just paid to repair the car last week!!) Kieth
  9. Thanks, dan. Another question. Is it possible that this problem has been existent for a long time? I would never have known of the problems if you had not recommended the Ultimate Boot CD. When the computer boots up, the BIOS shows that everything is OK. Kieth
  10. I need to look around and see what the costs are, and see what I want to do. I've had my computer for several years, and I've already put a second motherboard into it. If I change it again, it'll be the 3rd. I've also changed video cards a couple of times. Today in the ads (adverts for you UKers!), there's a computer listed for €300. It's a Dell D2000C, Mobile Intel Pentium Dual Core E2 180, HD 160 Gb, Ram 2 Gb, DVD+/-RW burner, video Nvidia Ge Force 7050, with Win. Vista Home Basic. No monitor, but I have a nice flat screen that I like (Captiva), which is fairly new (1 1/2 years?). I'm half tempted to get another computer, but again, it depends on the costs. What could happen to my system if I wait a bit before buying? Would it freeze up completely? Would I loose data? Kieth
  11. Yes, it was out for about 20 minutes. I had to reset the clock, etc. Kieth
  12. My fingers are tired. I cleaned the memory sticks, then I cleaned the memory sticks, then I took put them in and out, in and out, in and out, etc. Something is strange, but I really don't understand what's going on. I have 2 memory sticks. I'll call them A and B. If A is in the left slot and B in the right, I get hundreds of memory errors. If B is in the left and A in the right, I get thousands of errors. If either one is in either the left or right, and the other slot is left empty, there are no errors. I have had as little as 8 errors and as many as 10,000. Then I noticed something else. Since I was tired of putting the memory sticks in and out, and since I learned how to run just test 5, which is the one giving me the errors (having to wait only a couple of minutes instead of 12), I just watched the program run test 5 more than once. With each consecutive test, the amount of errors increased! Since I've been messing around with this off and on (more on than off) all day, a few questions came to mind. 1) Since BIOS recognizes the memory and I would never have noticed these errors if dan hadn't told me about the Ultimate Boot CD, is it possible that these many memory errors have been "around" since I've had my computer? 2) Is it possible that I can keep on using my system w/o any side effects, thereby avoiding buying computer parts? 3) Could this be a motherboard problem (which seems logical to me)? 4) Is it possible that these errors are (or are not) the cause of my system closing down? Any ideas as to what I should do now? Thanks much, Kieth
  13. OK, this is what I've done so far, and what I've found out. I really appreciate the help. Last night while in bed, I got to thinking about what SilverSurfer said, that it's probably an up-dated program/file that's causing the problem. About a month ago (I think), I tried once again to get my Canon LBP 2900 laser printer to work, but w/o success. Doing that though, I installed the 2 drivers it needed: cndrvcups-common and cndrvcups-capt. Since I thought I would try to get the printer working another day, I decided to leave the files installed on my system. By the way, I mentioned earlier that my BIOS wasn't reading the usb hub (the external plugin type). Well, on the hub, I had this printer attached. After removing the files, I then plugged the hub back in, plugged the printer into it, and started up my system. The BIOS (which I had re-set by taking out the battery - as I couldn't find the CMOS reset plug), "saw" the hub and started up w/o a problem. I checked the BIOS, and I couldn't find an optimized default option. Of course I do not really know where to look, but I read all the options I could find. Also, I checked the memory, using the Ultimate Boot CD. I have 2 - 512 memory sticks. After taking them in and out, switching them from left to right, checking them together and individually, I found the problem. When both of them are in, I have a memory problem, when I have one or the other in, either in the left or right slot, there is no problem. I hoped it was just a dirty pin, so I took the memory sticks in a out a few times. In fact, the amount of errors changed drastically. Instead of thousands, it was 'just' hundreds. Any ideas as to what I should do now? Thanks, Kieth
  14. OK, I downloaded are ran Ultimate Boot CD. I didn't understand much, though. :P The one thing I did understand, though, was all the red writing stating that it found almost 9,000 errors. It was with Memtest86+ v1.70. On test 5 (block move, 64 moves), it came up with all the errors. Does it mean anything to anyone? Do I need to run it again and try and write down some more information? After dan wrote his first answer, it came to mind another problem. Every once in a while, though rarely, my BIOS boot sequence and setup is changed. I was also having problems with the BIOS reading my usb connector (the added external one that has 4 usb ports in it). I do not know if these things are related to my present problem. Thanks, Kieth
  15. OK, thanks. I'll get busy doing that. Kieth
  16. I tried to look in that file the other day, but it was blank. I tried again today, and it was blank. Then I opened kwrite in root, opened the file, and . . . Well, it wasn't blank after all!! While I was looking at it, the system crashed again. Following is part of the file, the part when the system crashed. Does it make sense to anyone? It doesn't to me!! Last night it rained and cooled everything down. Today, it's quit nice, not really hot, just warm. 17. Well, I thought the problem might have been Firefox and Thunderbird running together, but not this time. I had Opera 9.5 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.16 on, along with BibleTime 1.6.5, OpenOffice 2.4.1, and KMahjongg. Without a warning, my system just turned off. Is there a log that I can get to that will list what happened, or will at least give me some information? Any other ideas that might be creating this? It all started about 2 weeks ago after I did a normal upgrade. I do not remember what was upgraded, but I think it had to do with sound and/or video. This problem of turning off unexpectedly is sporadic. $ uname -a Linux Alice 2.6.24.7-desktop-1mnb #1 SMP Mon Jul 28 15:12:10 EDT 2008 i686 AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+ GNU/Linux I'm using Mandriva 2008, the latest issue. If there's a command that will list my system, if you'll tell me, then I'll get more information. Thanks, Kieth [moved from Everything Linux by spinynorman]
  18. I read somewhere that not all sites update at the sametime, therefore, it could be that you just need to wait a day and try again. Although, all I've done in the past is what Ian said, change mirrors.
  19. I really haven't the slightest idea on how to do it, but just "food for thought", would it be feasible using the file .kde/Autostart ? Kieth
  20. I just updated Opera, cleared the cache, deleted the cookies, added English as the preferred language, then went to the Yalp! site. I tried to watch TV by clicking on the TV icon, but it didn't let me, giving me the same error as before. I then canceled the cache and deleted the cookies again. This time when I went to the Yalp! website, instead of clicking on the TV icon, I went to another channel listed, clicked on that icon, and it worked! I closed Opera, re-opened it, clicked on the TV icon, and it still works. I guess the update did the job. SeaMonkey, instead, still doesn't work. Kieth
  21. In that post, he has a link to this site: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-mandriva.html I also went there and looked. It give two urpmi commands to download various packages: I looked for these packages in MCC. I cannot find libdvdplay0 or wxvlc. The vlc-plugin-mad isn't there either, but might be vlc-plugin-mod, which I found. Here's what I get in my terminal with those urpmi commands. Kieth
  22. It's the whole system. If I remember, it started happening right after I installed some regular updates. I think the updates were video and/or sound, but I can't remember. My video system is often a "pain in the neck". Anyway, it doesn't happen everyday, and there doesn't seem to be any common factor, unless it is Thunderbird. Is there a log I can get into to see what is happening. A few days ago, I was checking my old topics from a couple of years ago, because I remember that you were helping me solve a problem. For that topic, I read a message log - /var/log/messages to see what was happening to my system. This time I went to read the same log, but it is empty. Is there another log somewhere to read? As far as Yalp!, right now I am writing this from my "new user" that ffi recommended I create. I then changed the kde language to Italian, although English is still listed. I rebooted kde, so that all the applications are in Italian. Then I tried to hook up to Yalp!, but it gave me the same IP error. As I mentioned earlier, it isn't really a problem, but more of a "curiosity problem".
