  1. Just a curiosity question. There are lots of types of kernels. Years ago, it seems that we only had to install one, plus the kernel source. Now there are many. I just updated the following kernel security releases, and I was just wondering what each one is suppose to do? Thanks kernel-desktop-586 kernel-desktop-586latest Izma-kernel Vbox-kernel
  2. OK, thanks. I'll just not go there anymore for any "prizes"!
  3. When I go to www.mcdonalds.it to get my "prize", Firefox3 has difficulty opening it up at first. The window goes back and forth from maximum to minimum several times, then finally settles down. The message in Konsole is: Any ideas as to the problem? PS. The prize certainly isn't worth anything!!
  4. You can open your file manager (konqueror?) then go to root. You can do this by pushing the "up" arrow" until you can't go "up" any more. Then you'll be in root. Then look for the file "boot". Click on it, then you'll see the icon "Grub". Click on it, then you'll see the icon /menu.lst. Click on it, and it will open up in another program. Then you can copy and paste it's contents here.
  5. Yes, that's what's suppose to happen!! Now with the new firefox window, go to You Tube and watch a film. Then copy the contents that are in Konsole here.
  6. There isn't that option. Yes, I have KDE 4.1 (therefore plasmoid). The calendar is on the panel at the bottom of the screen. The option you mentioned, which I use with other programs (OpenOffice, etc.), isn't on the calender when I open it up. It isn't in the "Settings" options either. I also put a widget for a calendar (I tried all of the calendar widgets) on the "desktop". The "stay on top" option wasn't on them either.
  7. Click on "Menu", go to "Tools" and somewhere in there you will find an icon that looks like a TV that's turned off (black screen). It probably has the name "Konsole" or at least something like that. When you open it, it is just a black screen with one short written line on it. At the end of the line type "firefox" and see what happens. The exact name to write can be found by right clicking on the firefox icon, looking at the "icon settings" (or something like that), and then looking at the "permissions". There should be a command line there, stating what the command is to start firefox (when you press the icon!). If we knew the information Greg asked for, it would be easier to help. Even at that, the more information you give, the more you can be helped.
  8. I often have to open up the calendar on the panel, look at the calendar while writing dates in an OpenOffice document. Up till now (KDE 4.1), the calendar would remain open and above all other open windows, allowing me to write down certain dates. Now, every time I begin to write, the calendar disappears. Therefore, I have to continually open it so I can see other dates. Is there anyway to get it to remain above all the windows? [moved from Everything Linux by spinynorman]
  9. Open Firefox in console, try watching the film clips, and see if there is message in console.
  10. From "Menu", go to "Tools", "System tools", "Configure your Desktop". Then click on "Advanced". You'll see an icon for "File associations". Try that and see if it works.

  13. You can download the source, deb, rpm, etc. I don't know which one you tried but here is the link for the .rpm file. Try that, as it's easier. flash 10 .rpm file

    digikam bug?

Thank you Chris, that solved my problem!
  18. My computer is really getting slow. There is also a problem when I close down a program. After closing down a program, it "leaves behind" a gray window. I'm hoping that it is connected with the problem of my computer loading up slowly. Below is the content of the file /var/log/messages. It is only for the first couple of minutes after I turned on the computer. I would appreciate all of you looking at it to see what the problem is. Thank you. digikam bug?

I'm using 2009 and KDE 4.1, and the newest digikam, and I have problems. If I press the "view" button, nothing shows.
  20. :woops: Since I'm not very good at "computer" stuff, 99% of my "problems" are self inflicted and not caused by bugs. Therefore, I've never checked to see if a bug report has ever been filed for any of my "problems" (I don't even know how to), and obviously, I've never reported a bug. :woops: I don't think I would know the difference between a bug and one of my famous "problems"!! If this is a REAL bug, I should report it, and will.
  21. When I did my "test", I don't remember which one I opened up first in console, so before answering your question, I decided to try both ways. First I opened OO, then Totem. After a few minutes, the "File" menu popped down. Next I tried just the opposite. Sure enough, after a couple of more minutes, the "File" menu opened. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I almost always have them on different desktops, but tonight I have them on the same. Oh, I forgot, I use KDE 4.1. Another thing (to say that which is obvious) is that I'm always working with a document in OO. Whether I'm typing or not, the "File" menu drops down.
  22. I tried to copy and paste my .pls file, but it wouldn't do it. But anyway, I have the following 5 stations in the .pls file. http://scfire-nyk-aa02.stream.aol.com:80/stream/1006 http://riosal.ic.llnwd.net/stream/riosal_kbaq_hi mms://wm-live.abacast.com/wpr-music-20 mmsh://win.1.c3.audiovideoweb.com/va90winlive2057?MSWMExt=.asf mms://wstream5d.di.fm/guitar
  23. After installing 2009.0, OpenOffice writer at times acts strange. The "File" menu opens up as if I clicked on it with the mouse, or used alt-f. I finally found out what's causing it (but not the solution!). When I have Totem Movie Player playing music off the Internet using the playing list file (.pls) that I saved. It doesn't happen if Totem Movie Player is just on, but only while playing the .pls. I opened up both programs in console, and there were some messages written. Then I waited for the "File" menu to open up again, and when it did, the messages that were already written in console didn't change. They are (and were): This really isn't a big deal, as there are other ways to listen to music, but it would be kind of nice to get it resolved. Any ideas? Thanks
