  1. oh, btw, how is it with ipod and linux, are there any problems with storing usual mp3 files on an ipod from linux?
  2. I have an oldish 256mb iRiver mp3 player and it works well with Mandriva. Of course I've formated it with the iRiver software to be like usb storage, i.e., skip the iRiver windows software in between. Haven't tried it on recently installed 2006 though (forgot where I put it, so can't test atm). p.s. imho, Amarok is too crowded and heavy. Besides it has too many features which I don't need, that's why I use XMMS (I've never managed to run Beep for some misterious reason)
  3. I wouldn't say so. I don't know how is it for you, but the most valuable information for me is stored in the user's account. I can restore system from cd's in less than 20 minutes, but the same can not be said about my documents and mp3.
  4. Just copy over the existing icon/wallpaper your desired one (keep the same filename).
  5. True, I didn't recognize any band I know too, and I'm pretty much into obscure, unknown neofolk, folk and darkwave music. But, as we both understand, it's good for marketing AND it may help some indy artists to promote themselves.
  6. From Slashdot.org -> "Mandriva 2006 is to be the first Linux distro to offer built in online music service. The service will compete with the likes of emusic.com for the music business of Linux users. I have not used Mindawn before, but the service is offered in Ogg Vorbis and FLAC." http://linux.slashdot.org/linux/06/02/25/1419224.shtml http://wwwnew.mandriva.com/en/company/pres...through_mindawn This is so cool! Let's hope it turns out usable and good. p.s. At any case it's a fantastic PR move from Mandriva :o
  7. Just tried kftpgrabber and I've got to say -> it is one ugly, buggy, needlessly hard to use piece of shit :angry2: Based on Kbear I presume. -------------- I'll try Krusader, use it for local browsing, maybe it's good for the net too. :)
  8. Do that manually, the kde icon is in /usr/share/icons/crystalsvg (or /usr/share/icons/default) login screen background is -> /usr/share/mdk/backgrounds/default.png
  9. Not really related (sorry), but I have an interesting ADSL connection, namely - I've setup my Mandriva to connect to Ethernet in MCC (with all the default ethernet settings), and it somehow automatically connects to the net. It's magic! :D
  10. Remember that even when you have Windblows you still can present Linux using a LIVE cd. I suggest trying out Kanotix, it's ideal for such purposes. p.s. Dual boot is a good idea, but won't Mandriva be too resource hungry, it's not great processor speed and quite little ram. I think it's too little for KDE or Gnome, try another WM.
  11. I suggest KPDF as the best .pdf reading prog on Linux :D But yea, you can't generally install Windows .exe files on Linux, on Mandriva (though not only Mandriva) we have .rpm files, of course one can always try to install from source. You can install WINE and run the exe with a command -> wine program.exe <-, it will try to "emulate" a windows environment. (WINE = wine is not an emulator, I know I know!)
  12. Thanks, tyme! That's a very good advice about Konqueror, I somehow hadn't thought of using it as an ftp app. :D
  13. Hello! I wonder if there is an ftp prog for Linux that automatically decides if the file is to be uploaded binary or ascii. I have to update a few Gallery (php app) versions on several locations and that prog is one heavy messed up thing. It's good, but there are lots of files and in one subfolder there are binary files in another - ascii, so it's a real pain to upload each folder more or less manually. Any suggestions? I've been using gFTP, if you know any better ftp prog, please do tell, I have to work a lot with FTP in my daily tasks. Thanks!
  14. Well, if Mandriva sucks so much for you, try another distro, maybe SuSe or Fedora Core. Not really an answer, I know
  15. In another thread someone said to begin the install with the "no apci" option (sata issue).
  16. <s>Could it be that devs have forgotten to pack SATA drivers for MDV2006? :o If so, then it's just stupid</s> sorry, didn't see <i>"Installed with "linux noapic" and the installation went smooth."</i> at first.
  17. Office and multimedia mostly, then of course all internet activities and also webdesign. It's my home desktop and I do everything I need for my studies and personal use on it.
  18. Oh, I just found that there is a free AVG antivirus for Linux desktops! http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5 http://free.grisoft.com/doc/100/lng/us/tpl/v5 Apparently it's quite new
  19. Yea, delete it, it's useless if you're not a total sadomazochist :P OOo_2.0.1_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz is 104mb in size p.s. When you get it, cut/paste the Mandriva Menus .rpm file from the subdirectory into the main rpm dir, then delete the subdir, and only then install with -ivh * so only the Mandriva menu entries will be installed ;)
  20. Sorry, mate, wrong file! You need to get a file called OOo_2.0.1_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz from here -> http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.1/index.html And the command is rpm -ivh * just like that p.s. The file which you got is an archive of the source which you'd have to compile yourself (near impossible, it's even worse than compiling KDE, better get that rpm archive I pointed out).
  21. They should update the link to Mandriva! :o http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/features.php3

    KDE 3.5.1

I too am using Thac and Ze KDE 3.5.1 and no problems, it's quite stable and bugfree!
  23. After you have installed unrar, you can use ARK to unarchive rar files.
  24. Thanks for the help! I will sound like a lame sucker now, but in Windows I remember it was a lot easier, you just pointed individual partsize in WinRar through a nice gui.
  25. -K, --starting-file=MEMBER-NAME begin at member MEMBER-NAME in the archive -k, --keep-old-files don't replace existing files when extracting --keep-newer-files don't replace existing files that are newer than their archive copies
