  1. no, no, spinynorman, that's about Gael's personal blog entry @ http://www.indidea.org/gael/fr/fired-message.php , not about that newsforge article
  2. I like Arch in concept, have read reviews and their homepage, just really don't have the time for it now, maybe in autumn. Thanks for the suggestion, A.I.
  3. I read one review (at Linux.com I think) which said that the new F5 is a huge drag for the system resources, namely - it has 512mb RAM recommended and lots of daemons should better be switched off, and also has problems with ATI cards due to Xorg 7.0(I have ATI Radeon 9000).
  4. Thanks for the info, scarecrow and cybrjackle So I'm now torn between Fedora and Kanotix, will try them out sometimes soon (after the new Fedora comes out).
  5. heh, ok maybe I'll go the Debian way and install Kanotix, I have fond memories of it ----- still, if someone can tell more about SUSE, please do, or Fedora Core
  6. Hi! Due to the recent happenings with Mandriva and Gael Duval in particular I've made up my mind that the next Linux release I'll install will be not Mandriva. The problem though is that I'm not really so familiar with other distros, been using Mandrake/Mandriva as my primary distro of choice since 9.1, although I've tried out Ubuntu, Knoppix, Kanotix, Mepis and a few other more obscure ones. I'm quite busy with work these months and have no time to learn to dig through config files to set everything up (Arch, Vector, etc), but I'm no newbie that needs a dumbed down windblows replacement, so no Linspire, Mepis, PClinuxOS for me too. I'm thinking between SuSE and Fedora Core, but maybe you could suggest some other. Please don't suggest Ubuntu, I have psychological incompatibility with it. I've got a few questions about SuSE and Fedora Core, please answer if you have the time. 1. mp3, divx, xvid, dvd support. Is it easy to set up those, i.e., just some driver install or smthing? 2. what about repos? which has more software available? is there anything like easy-urpmi? 3. the general quality, which of those two you think is more stable and bugless? 4. maybe there's anything else I should know? Thanks!
  7. Maybe the basis is that Mandriva had no reasons to fire him, i.e. a political not management choice.
  8. I'm thinking of ditching Mandriva because of that move. The next release I install will probably be SuSE or Fedora Core.
  9. Whatever you wish. p.s. I have removed and don't use standart k-menu through icon-click in KDE :P p.p.s. He, who seeks, shall find anyway. p.p.p.s. Why wrong? Works for me. Location may be different, but those are not really hidden like windblows system files. ---------- Here, took 30 seconds to find: Oh, I've shit my pants now, so scared  One of the reasons I use Linux is that I can customise it to my needs and, if your background or icon doesn't blend in with my overall GUI style and colours, I won't use it.

    Open office

I have P4 1.8ghz and 512mb RAM, On my system both opening and saving files (I'm working with huge files) seems to be faster on 2.0

OOo2 runs faster for me too. :)
  12. Hi, John! Maybe try gtkam, it's not as good as digikam, but... If your prime need is to just look at those photos and do little edit, try GQview (it just can't download them straight from your camera) p.s. You can still download those images, put them in a folder and look at them using digikam. Same goes for gtkam good luck! p.s. please excuse any stupid grammar mistakes, I'm very tired atm
  13. You might also want to check out Quanta Plus http://kdewebdev.org/
  14. Just get a newer version, it does the trick. I have 2.6.1
  15. Are there no Windows drivers that let you read/write EXT3 for example?
  16. How about installing from an rpm? :D There's a Brahms rpm for Mandriva 2006 and 10.x on http://rpm.pbone.net/ Just download the rpm file and run it, it will install the software, just like .exe on Windows. This is for 2006 => http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idp...k.i586.rpm.html This for 10.x => http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idp...k.i586.rpm.html And if you have easy-urpmi set up, just type urpmi brahms as root, and it will be automatically installed from internet. This is even easier than on Windows. You can set up your easy-urpmi here => http://www.mandrivausers.org/easyurpmi/index.php =========== Always, before trying to install from source, check out if maybe that software has already been prepared for you to install. If , after setting up easy urpmi, it's not available through the urpmi softwarename command, try your luck at http://rpm.pbone.net/, then Google for the rpm. Only then, as a last desperate step, try installing from source. You tried this desperate (for a newbie) step first, thus no wonder that it didn't work out for you.

    KDE 3.5.1

I generally find Thac and Ze packages quite good whatever guidelines they follow or not.
  18. Thanks, arctic! It solved the problem :D I hadn't thought that it might be related to the user files @/home. Now I have to reset all my settings though. :/ ehh
  19. Hi I've reinstalled OO.org 2.0.1 for a few times now (rpm -ivh *) and I always get these errors while saving a document. First this -> Then after I click 'ok' this -> And only then it saves the document. help!!

    kweather

It appears that I had an error in "weather_panelappletrc", 0000 instead of my station (EVRA). The stupid part is that my country of residence is not even there in the station menu, although it has more than one of these stations operational.

    kweather

Thanks for the advice, John! I'll try to do exactly as you said.
  22. I tried it, saw no reasons to prefer it over Mandriva, went back. sudo was really annoying, and when I set up 'root', I had various errors in KDE, and there was nothing to mach the ease and speed of use simmilar to MCC so I just said "meh", installed back Mandrake and have been happy ever since :P p.s. I think that their logo and default colour scheme sucks, but that's very subjective

    kweather

I have a simmilar problem. kweather doesn't even list my needed station (or country!!), but when I enter it manually in kweather file under ~/.kde/apps it just displays the same message p.s. I manage with Firefox weather extension, but it's not so nice as kweather
